\"Stock\" Camaro Encounter

Just when you thought all people told the truth about their cars...Me and a friend were out cruising one night and this guy comes up to me and asks if I'll run against his "stock" camaro, just so he can see how long he can hang with a Viper. Having nothing better to do, I agree. So we go behind Lowe's where its a long flat straight away w/no traffic. About 10 other people show up to watch and while I'm sitting there, the Camaro pulls up...I could tell from the sound, it was far from stock. So we run, and I win, despite getting a horrible launch off the line. I was told I beat him by a car length or so. I was wondering what all he had done b/c if he was stock, I should've beat him by a far greater margin. But the guy never popped his hood and after talking to me for a few mins after the race, he left. I later talked to a guy who informed me of 1 little mod the Camaro had done....a C5 Vette engine, lol. So I feel a lot better about only beating him by a car length or so w/my pitiful reaction time.

still shoulda beat a stock C5 vette engine by more than a car length...unless it was S/C'd or modded.

I agree. Stock c5 or c6's for that matter are no match for the mighty V10!!!

Re:

If he did a complete engine swap, I doubt he left it at that... he had to have atleast added a couple more goodies to his car... funny thing is, he probably thought he was gonna beat you and get the awwwwww factor... instead went home feeling stupid.

I can tell ya from the sound, it wasnt just a engine swap only. He pulled up and it felt like the ground was shaking. I dont know for sure, but I'm willing to bet he had a cat-back exhaust system, lumpier cams, etc.

Re:

Camaros came with the same motor that a c5 did, some of the later camaros like the last SS's were more than capable of staying close to a gen 1 viper if the driver of the viper was not ready for a close race. I believe they ran very low 13's, maybe even high 12's.

Besides any camaro with minor mods can easily match a vipers performance.

Re: \"Stock\" Camaro Encounter

I have owned many muscle cars from the 60s,70s and 80s, Camaros, mustangs, and road runners..some had engines like the 427ci,and the 440ci..and trust me, none had the power of the Viper...not even highly modified...

HP was measured in a different way, some back then stated 425HP, but would only measure approx. 295HP by todays standards...

my biggest problem back then, was keeping the rear tires from spining, today when I hit the Viper pedal I gotta hold on to the wheel....

Same thing with the tires spinning now. Just with more umph when it is happening. 660 hp at the wheels is a bit more than your average Camaro!

"Easily?" You should instruct some of the mullets around here then. Seems like they can't even keep up without nitrous or a blower, and that's after fiddling with it every weekend. I suppose if that's an "easy" mod then so be it.

Re:

I wouldn't consider heads and cam a minor mod no matter how mild the specs are.

I agree completely it is not minor at all but... Neither of them can be seen when you lift the hood so it could pass as a "stock" car.

On a viper no, but on a camaro thats $1500.00 worth of mods which makes it very minor.

I'm getting old. Money isn't the issue, effort is. I consider anything beyond a tire swap a major mod.

Re:

what year was it?

I owned a 2002 SS before buying my Viper and I moded it slightly, LT headers, high flow cats, all exhaust and intake work, it was quick but not Viper quick.

"Besides any camaro with minor mods can easily match a vipers performance." --- what are you smoking to say that... over a 100 HP difference, and your going to make that up in 'minor mods'?

Re:

Does not matter what his "slight mods" were.
The Gen 1.5 beat him by a good length even after a bad start.
"Slight mods" are obviously not enough mods to win. :2tu:

Head/Cam/intake/tune/headers/exhaust-422rwhp on an '02 LS1 SS. It was not as fast as a gen 1 viper but its very very close. These are minor mods for that car we are talking less than 3k installed.

My point is that any car especialy a camaro can be made as fast, dont everyone get their ******* in a bunch, I have owned a viper longer than most of you, and no matter what you do to that camaro it will never be a viper.

Re:

I agree with Russ.
Chevy speed equipment is cheap.
Any kid with a job can have a Camaro, modded to the point where you will not want to race him unless you have a very serious Viper.

The guy with the Camero in the story didn't have what it takes. He could have.
I would never assume that any near stock Viper would beat any Camero who wanted to race.

Re:

i am in the process of modding my car camaro heavily to run a 11.50 1/4 mile time. it takes alot of high performance parts to get a camaro to run this time. but the cost in terms of $$$ is way less than viper parts. i have already installed a turbo 400 trans with 3,000 stall. next month my camaros engine will be modded to 525 crankshaft horsepower on the stock bottom end of the 347 CI LS1 engine. this will run on pump gas. i can throw another 100 horsepower at 2nd and 3rd gear thanx to my nitrous system as i tear down the track on slick tires. ultimately i will put a 12 bolt rear end in and punch the motor out to 427 CI with 12.0:1 compression ratio and direct port the nitrous system for a 150 shot of juice. this should make 800 crank horse on the bottle. i will have to put a roll cage in then. but 10 seconds flat in the 1/4 should be mine then. won't ever have to worry about broken rear ends and halfshafts or busted trannys and roasted clutches. the camaro makes for a very consistent bracket car when built right. even will wheelie out of the hole with sub 1.5 second 60 foot times if you build her right. the camaro is a muscle car and i luv mine almost as much as i luv my viper. just don't try and keep up with a viper on a road course. in fact don't even waste yout time taking a camaro out on a road course. vipers and vettes are made for road racing. camaros and mustangs are made for drag racing.

chevy, dodge and ford............ its all good for me :usa:
