Georgia Law now reads that Racing on the Streets (first offense) is a MANDANTORY Habitual Violator status, with up to 12 months in jail and a $1500 to $3000 fine (tax).
HV means you LOOSE your license to drive for a period of 5 years
, this also means that if you are caught driving during this 5 year period you are charged with a FELONY for operating a motor vehicle and face 5 years in a Georgia Prison.
I was arrested in 1980 for drag racing my '70 440 Dodge Charger RT, watched the wrecker driver's buddy drive my car away to the impound lot while I was handcuffed in the backseat of a patrol car.
My Fine (tax) $360.00, one night in jail (waiting for Dad to bail me out) and $200.00 for the Attourney. I learned a lesson and quit (for the most part).
Things were different when I was a kid.
The penalty phase written into the Law also gives a wide berth to the Judge during sentencing.
In GA law there is a written provision that states: The Judge at His or Her sole discretion may impose all or part of a sentence (not exact wording but close enough).
I think the MAKERS (career politicians ******* for votes) of these ridiculous penalties are the ones that should garner most of your written angst not the Cops. However, if it were my Son involved I'd much rather visit him in Jail than visit his Gravesite.
Strong deterrents are in place to try and keep people alive. If you know that the penalty for street racing is imprisonment and revoked driving privileges for years (possibly) aren't you just plain dumb to do it? If you do get caught who's fault is it? Little hint: it ain't the Cop's fault.
Race at the TRACK or go to jail, sounds pretty simple and straight forward.
