Supercharged GTS vs. Stock SRT 10 Convertible

Recently, the SRT Experience came to Homestead Racetrack. For those of you who are not aware of this screaming bargain, it is a one day combo race school - driving experience with class room lectures,lunch, soft drinks, cars,and gas provided for the low price of $300.00. The cars were the SRT 10 Viper Convertible, the SRT 8 Magnum and SRT 8 300C, the SRT 6 Crossfire and the SRT 4. A Quad Viper Truck was also present. There were three drivimg components: 1/8th mile drag strip ( only the automatic cars were used); autocross ( SRT 4, SRT 6, and Viper SRT 10);and, road course ( one of the two SRT 8's,SRT 6 and Viper SRT 10). The school is run by Skip Barber personnel for Chrysler and they do a superb job. Now for the reason I named this post as I did. My 1999 Viper GTS has been supercharged since February. I switch off between it and my modded Ford Lightning as a daily driver. Since I only have one Viper, I had forgotten what the power of a stock Viper felt like.( When I first acquired the car back in 1999, I thought it was scary fast. Of course, like many of you I got used to the stock power level and opted to start modifying.) When I drove the stock SRT 10 it felt - are you ready?.............................SLOW!!!! Don't get me wrong. I think the SRT 10 Viper is a great car. It handles and brakes well. In fact the brakes are fantastic. But, and it is a big but, to me the car felt very underpowered.The bottom line is that until Dodge has a "Supercharged" Option or a non boosted engine option that puts out at least 650HP/725ft/lbs stats at the flywheel with the same power curve , I'm keeping the vehicle I affectionately refer to as "Monsta". Besides, I strongly prefer the Gen II GTS design over the current design. I think the new coupe is a mixture of styling cues that do not work well together except, possibly, in black. Black hides many flaws. Before the flames start, just remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and some of you need glasses.

I had forgotten what the power of a stock Viper felt like.( When I first acquired the car back in 1999, I thought it was scary fast. Of course, like many of you I got used to the stock power level and opted to start modifying.) When I drove the stock SRT 10 it felt - are you ready?.............................SLOW!!!!

Don't you think a stock 99 GTS would feel SLOW now ???? Really an unfair judgement ...if it was to slow, just s/c it like you did your GTS.

SRT10 is decieving pretty fast. I've also got a S/C GTS.. the SRT is so quiet, so fast. Your judgement is way off line if you really don't own both. When I'm in my SRT10 and take off from lights and look in my rear view, the cars are SOOO far back I don't realize it cuz it's so quiet.

The SRT-10 is a better car, all around, short of looks. If you want a daily driver car, buy the srt-10. If you want a "drivers car" pick the GTS.

I'd love to take that slow SRT around the track against your non-ABS stock suspensioned monsta.

He will **** you. High revving s/c monsta with the quick shifts, you don't stand a chance!

If you weren't such cheap labor I'd kick you off my pit crew for comments like that.

Bob, as usual, you have good ideas but you are misuderstood.
Yes the new SRT-10 isn't good looking, but from mecanical point of view it is much better than the older GTS. A lot of people thing that the older GTS is missing power so they put all kind of staff on their viper to gain a couple of HP. However if you want a real gain: upgrade the tires/wheels and the breaks. That makes the beast much better and likely you will beat several sc vipers.

Yes, the SRT-10 are "poor" desing. I would say they are a mistake like the Corvettes from the 80's. The only think that I hope that Benz won't discard the Vipers againt their AMG because of the poor yield on these cars. And if you read the new Motor Trend edition this is something very likely to happen. No matter how much we like our Vipers if the journalists don't like them, they will make soon part of the historical cars for the benefit of AMG. I am sure you are a good lawyer, chrysler should have similar qualified guys for their public relationship.

Thanks Schulmann. It would be nice if all of the responders took the time to carefully read the posts but that is not going to happen. As I said in my post, I think the SRT 10 is a great car. It just does not appeal to me like the GTS. I also think the vertical gauge array was ill conceived. ( Looking down to check my gauges is not something I really want to do at speed.) The main purpose of the post is to point out the fact that for those of us who have substantially upgraded our Gen II power and performance, the stock SRT 10 coupe and convertible are not enough car - particularly in view of the price increase. This was not a put down of stock Vipers. I have been driving performance vehicles ( go carts until age 16 ) since I was eleven. Many people should not be driving modded cars. In fact, based on some of the posts describing Viper accidents on this forum, some should not even be driving a stock Viper. As for my brakes and handling, I am pleased with their performance. I prefer the handling of my car over the SRT 10 I drove. I think that my GTS has a tighter suspension. If my existing brakes ( not completely stock) bothered me, I would change them out. Lastly, the power curve issue is very real. If Dodge were to come out with a supercharger option, it is my hope that it would be a twin screw type blower. I want the power to come in early as is the case with Sean's system.

Also the SRT/10 trottle is more forgiving. It doesn't bolt when you tap the gas like the Gen I &II so it feels slower until you really jump on it then all hell breaks loose. I love my GTS but for a stock TRACK car. SRT/10. But that's me.

Remember how quiet the exhaust sounded in your GenII when you were stock? Also remember how forgiving the throttle was too? As Bart Simpson would say "DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooHhhhhHHhhhhhhhhhhh!"

The SRT reminds of my GenII when it was totally stock. Just as quiet only MUCH tighter and faster.. ;)

Gerald. I am sorry to hear that your Gen II was quiet, slow and forgiving when you originally bought it. Mine was menacing, muscular,nimble,responsive,fast and precise. Maybe you got a lemon! Or Dodge may have intentionally limited its capabilities for use in Tampa. Everyone knows Miami is a much faster city. It is a good thing that you put the blower on to cover up its flaws. It is no coincidence that you had to send the car to MIami to have it done. LOL. Enjoy both of your snakes. My other daily driver, the mildly modded Lightning, is a more stealthy vehicle. I guess you could say it fulfills the need that your SRT 10 plays for you except that it can also haul cuttings to the dump! :usa:

Chuck. Ethnic slurs, by implication or otherwise, have no place on this board or anywhere else. I suggest you keep them to yourself. As for "posers", the last time I checked, the Miami/Dade area had a few areas like Bal Harbor, Star Island, Fischer Island, Key Biscayne and SOBE.The Tampa area has what - Busch gardens, Berns steakhouse and the Route 60 bridge? Oh, I almost forgot, you can always get some excitement by visiting St. Pete. LOL

I do not think your wife would consent to the mortage and betting is illegal. LOL.It would be a fun race. Perhaps, we can all chip in and rent Homestead Racetrack; set up a road course; and run a few comparo laps between variously equipped and stock vehicles. I do not believe that a stock SRT 10 would keep up. Remember - I have driven both vehicles. I am not bragging - just stating fact. ABS brakes mean nothing in competitive driving. As for the suspension, I believe mine is tighter. If you are talking about the regular oval racetrack, your assertion is completely absurd. I would run away from a stock SRT 10 like it was parked. So will the new SRT 10 coupe - better air flow and higher top speeed. Lastly, read the post again. I said: "Andrew of West Palm quoting and agreeing with Gerald..." I'll forgive the reading error. West Palm Beach makes Tampa look like the center of the universe.

I will stand behind my post. Indeed, you were slamming a STOCK SRT for being slower than your s/c GTS. I AM NOT a big SRT fan, but I still try not to make stupid statements like you did. Care to wager if your "tight" GTS can out autocross a bone stock SRT10 ???

P.S. Bring your "monsta" to Bradenton in December for the V10 race and we will see how true that is :2tu:

Bobpantax, Your last post really proves that you are clueless about the SRT/10 and road racing. Trust us, a one day SRT Experience does not make you an expert, as you have proven. As far as renting Homestead Race Track, We do, every year, 8 to 10 times as well as Sebring and Moroso. Note: these are the road courses not the OVALs? I think you’ve been watching to much NASCAR
And ABS means everything in competitive driving. Bring the MONSTA down and you’ll find out.

Reread the posts again. The usual sensitive reactions have set in. No Viper is being slammed. They are all great cars. As for ABS, I stand by what I said. Unless it is an adustable type, it can and will interfere with certain driving styles and techniques on a road couse. I do not need a computer to cut the gas and feather the brake. I've been using the technique without a computer for 47 years. As for Gerald, your love of, and reference to, Bart Simpson is a testament to your cultural sophistication. LOL.

I drove a 03 two weeks ago, and I thought it lack the power my 99 ACR has. I did not push it hard, but it felt like something was missing power wise. I didn't get that "WOW" feeling from it. Having said that, I'm still buying one :2tu: .

But seriously, you can not constantly out brake a computer, Corner after corner, lap after lap can’t be done so don’t kid yourself.

But if so bring the monsta down to Homestead in December and show us how it done.

I have never heard of ABS being used on a Grand Prix car or any other road racing vehicle driven by a professional. If you know of a case, please advise. No flame intended. I am just curious about this issue since stock ABS works within certain tolerances and those tolerances are definitely inconsistent with certain driving techniques. Thanks in advance for the info.
