So what you're showing is that the properly driven lighter car with more power, better aero, and a bit better gearing for those particular rolls won?

both cars are driven well, wonder how much the downforce on the ACR slowed it down.

It all looks good on paper, but you have to admit that there has been a lot of negativity regarding the performance of the Gen V cars - even on this site. People have been saying that there wasn't any performance gain, and that dyno numbers aren't better, etc.. So, what better way to prove something than to put two cars side by side? To be honest, neither Andy or I expected the Gen V to pull away like that, based on all the negative press we've been reading about the Gen V cars.

As for the gearing comment, we went from 20, 40, and 60. All had the same results. The Gen V appears to be geared well for all speeds. As for Aero, doesn't the ACR put down similar trap speeds in the 1/4-mile as the base coupe? We weren't running up past 140. ACR probably never touched 135 mph.

I've got to love the comments on Facebook

Pretty cool. Wouldn't a GTS coupe from 08 have been a better comparison for a roll race? The ACR with all the downforce created at higher speeds would kinda be at a disadvantage the faster they went.

So, we can compare the Gen V to the ACR when the ACR wins, but when the Gen V wins, it "isn't the same kind of car"

lol

Nice videos

Any Houston-area Gen 4 owners (base coupe, factory stock) are welcome to join me in a re-test. The ACR owner didn't feel his aero hurt him, we weren't going that fast. The ACR wing was fixed at its least aggressive setting for these runs, and these cars are capable of 170+ mph with the aero.

I have no doubt that the latest cars are quicker and faster than the previous gen ACR or base model. Regardless of what the ACR owner "felt" , the aero on that car is a disadvantage at speed.

ACR is purpose built car. Put them both on the ring to find out how they compare. This comment is actually right on the money, considering how much down force and extra drag ACR generates, pretty obvious from the drag strip videos I see, with best times achieved by those who take the rear wing and the rest of ground effects off.

Um, isn't the "least aggressive" setting, still generating like 800 lbs downforce. I was given an e-copy of the Gen 4 ACR manual, and I think that was what it said. Should run them on a track next like petermj suggested.

You guys speaking aero: Did you not watch the video during the 1st gear starts at 20 and 40? Even at those speeds, the Gen V took off quicker. The 2nd gear 60 mph starts were much closer.

Any Houston area volunteers with a stock Gen 4 coupe (non-ACR) willing to try this test again? We can arrange that. How about we run this ACR against a non-ACR Gen 4 also? Has that been done?

This video was merely to compare acceleration. Like I said, some will dislike the results, some will like the results. Doesn't matter either way.

Maybe the guys from Mopar Nationals will chime in from yesterday's race. Don't know the prep on either car, Gen 4 Snakeskin Green ACR vs. Red/Black Stripes 2013. Both ran about 11.5.

As far as the ACR downforce goes, this is all I have to share. Great video! Thanks for sharing!

Your comments apply to any Gen 4, not just ACR. Obviously Gen 5 is improved and it shows in acceleration and drivability, just like it did between past generations. If there was no improvement, what would be the point to buy this car? Thanks anyway Captain Obvious. And here is a thought, do a video with ACRX, at least the horsepower is matched and weight comparable, on a real track of course.

PeterMJ, why the hostility? This was just a test, results posted. Sorry that you don't seem to like the results. To date, I've not seen any other similar comparison between Gen 4 and 5, just a bunch of people saying the Gen 5 wasn't any quicker. So, here is your proof. The ACR owner (Andy aka FLATOUT) asked for this race. He owns an ACR, so that is what was raced.

Actually it is nice to see a heads up comparison with these two compared to each other. Tony, I think you are right in looking to compare acceleration between a Gen 4 Coupe and a Gen 5. This way you can pretty much say coupe vs coupe. Either way nice video. Your video really shows how the Gen 5 accelerates at 60 mph already at speed.

Shocking news. A car with 40 more horsepower and no aero drag is faster in a straight line.
Who'd a thunk it.

It is easy for all of to think this on paper, but has it ever been proven before this? Keep in mind that this ACR also "beat" another Gen V only a week ago, and everyone thought that was normal, too. The difference this time is that Andy and I are both seasoned drag racers, and we did our best to remove the driver skill factor from the equation. The results are what they are, and now you have video coverage of it.

A fellow Viper owner and I went out yesterday and did some acceleration testing. The results may surprise you. Here is the article and video I created:

http://motorhed.com/xf/threads/video-2013-srt-viper-vs-2008-acr-viper.6032/

Now, we certainly understand the ACR should be able to put down better lap times at a roadcourse, but that wasn't what we were testing here.

Please "Like" our Facebook page, for future tests with the Viper. Maybe a ZR1 next?

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Motorhed/541669432555173

Thanks,
Tony

The Gen V just left the ACR hard every time. Was expecting it to be closer than that. It's good the new one will out accelerate the old car!

No hostility on my part at all. The fact that Gen 5 is faster and easier to drive than previous generation has already been well documented by Gilles and variety of automotive magazines. The car is lighter, has better gearing and more horsepower, if it did not, then there would be a problem. I can assure you I will not spend my days thinking about it, LOL. And I did not see any test data to like or not to like or motivate me to send my car to the crusher.

Grapes are pretty darned good unless of course they're sour... And Nine Ball and FLATOUT, (a.k.a., Captains Obvious ), thanks for the video. Both cars are awesome! I honestly can't understand the riff between Gen anything Viper owners. I did a 50 to 140 roll with a friend of mine who has a seriously built Firebird Friday night in my V and was pretty pleased with the results. That aside, I'm happy with my V even if the IV would have pulled it. Thanks again.

Well done Tony and Andy for taking the time to share this. The results are what I expected and should be considering the HP increase and other benefits for the Gen V. A win is a win and both are great looking cars. Stock for stock too. That is the way to compare. Well done.

This.

I also do not understand the animosity between Viper owners, related to generation. I had a Gen 3 when the Gen 4 came out, and there was very little feuding about the new model. We didn't see much complaining about how the new Gen 4 didn't really change all that much, except for the engine upgrade and 600 hp. Now we have a completely new Gen 5 car, and some people complain that the car hasn't changed enough. I'm sure we'd all love to see it at 700 hp, but maybe Team SRT has a few tricks up their sleeve for the upcoming ACR?

What these disputes do show, is that there is a lot of passion coming from owners for their respective vehicle generation. That is great. But, don't direct that energy towards others with different generation cars. It doesn't make any sense.

Great informative video. There should no longer be any question as to which Gen is faster in a straight line. This and the other videos clearly show a dominant advantage over the G4. I just don't understand how it loses to the ZR1 to 150mph by 1 second in two different mag tests. The G4 tied the ZR1 to 150mph in multiple tests so how could the G5 lose?

May be the typical mag bias or a ringer ZR1. Nine Ball have you had a chance to run a '13 ZR1 yet? After seeing these vids I don't see how a G5 could lose by a second to 150mph to a ZR1 unless it was all in the launch since the '13 ZR1 has the upgraded MPSC's. would be quite interesting to see a roll race with one from the same mph increments as your race with this ACR.
