I'll start if off..



1. The High Flo Side Sill Set - Replacement/exchange

Honestly, I just don't get it.

Why hasn't anybody simply attended to redesigning the whole of the sill panels yet? Why hasn't somebody recreated the sill panels with excellent free fresh air flow and great drainage? I would have thought that this easily dismounted parts would have been a high target for custom parts suppliers. Get the air moving...get the water out...lots of **** louvers....lots of front and rear mesh (yes I've seen the little mesh panel ready to flood the stock design with rain water with no place to go). Then, with lots of air moving we simply don't need to wrap and bind and tape and seal and hang more layers. Who wouldn't want cooler sills (and I'm, not talking just about temperature here), less discoloration?

I don't think that's an easy task. Having air flow but without water seepage and retention. Water can get through mesh and louvers too. So you would need some type of drainage but if you have holes to drain, water can come up too. The best is to not get any water in there in the first place to rust the exhaust. Hence we're back where we started.

The difficulty is in attaching the turbinator close enough to the muffler bearing so the super tri-moly lubricant can baffle the resonant exhaust pulses...

Why not just cut nice louver slots in the bottom where you can't see them? The things I believe to be factual that would apply here are that other cars merely have catalysts with underbody airflow underneath them, that the inside of the side sill gets wet anyway, the corrosion suspected is from the dissimilar metals in contact (i.e. not water causing rust) and the exhaust piping is stainless steel. (Maybe not any clamps)

To really protect the side sill, electrically isolate it from the frame with nylon washers. After my original '94 side sills were replaced in '98, there are dings and paint worn off, but no bubbling like the first time. The previous owner was a lot nicer to the car than I am. The only rust (GAAAAA!!) I have seen is the thin sheet metal lip hanging off the frame rail under the doors used to hold the factory sill heat insulation. And the replacement sills had 3-4 louver slots cut in the bottom already, although they were at the muffler end and not the catalyst end.

I understand your points, and thank you for them, but still, I would say:

1. Water can come in, why not? The heat would still be huge, running the car would clear the moisture. Mesh vent the whole bottom of the panel. Rain in rain out.

The current problem is the tiny panel add-on solves (partially) the air flo in. But the design still needs air flo out and water drainage vents.

In CA the fact that the side sills enclose the cats and the fact that the whole car is so pricey, are the greatest virtues the Viper offers. Why you ask? Any other car subject to random road side smog inspections or simple smog checks out here gets nailed for the slightest modifications. Not that my car is modded illegaly, but it keeps their grimmy paws off my car.

Now to address your idea, Dan Craigin at DC Performance, sells a beautifully made stainless mesh opening that is placed on your sidesill. The unit requires minor cutting of your sidesill on the front inner fenderwell side. It allows cooler air to flow past your cats and muffler. They also sell inconel heat shielding which replaces the stock material. Unlike the stock material this heat shielding allows air to travel past the cats. This stuff is expensive, but between the two mods, the heat problem has been solved.

Why hack up the expensive side sill? Just cut holes in the plastic filler at each end and put screen behind the holes. The plastic filler pieces are easy to replace if the next owner doesn't like the holes.

Now we are cooking. I'll check them out. Sounds like the inconel sheilding allows for both air and drainage (?)

I have Random Tech High Flow Cats and 3 inch Borla mufflers. I've never had a problem with side sill heat, and I live in Nevada. I've tracked it a few times, and the sills have never been too hot to touch. Get rid of the crappy stock exhaust and get something that flows and doesn't cook you.

How about just making an affordable metal stock sill........SIX THOUSAND DOLLARS for ONE side is rediculous!

Looking at the bottom side of the sill, the surface is not flat and looks like there are gaps between the mounting holes. Can water find its way out that way?

Pircing remains amystery on much of their web site (as does the detail on some of their tiny tiny pictures) but looks like making a high air flo, water draining, less expensive than stock side sill could be possible.
