Hello, I don't really post here a lot I mainly spend most of the time reading. Anyway, I've mad up my mind that I'll be parting out and selling my charger asap when I get home from Korea. So on to my question. what are your opinions or experiences with buy back cars? I see 3 for sale now, and one that I really like for $79k which I think is high, considering its a 2014 base model with aero package. It had a full engine replacement and some other small items. Am I correct in thinking that this car will most likely sit for a long time? In my experience with look and watching, most cars sit for 6mths to a year. I'm thinking that this buy back car will still be there when I get home. I know what the dealer paid for the car so I'm think if it sits for a long time they will be willing to negotiate.

Thanks for your help

If you don't mind (and if the moderators don't mind), can you please post the links for the dealers where the 3 "buy-back" Vipers fare for sale?

That Van Horn dealer receives a lot of buy backs, I have seen at least a few other Gen 5s that they have had over the past year or so (B/W, White with red seats, etc). I talked to them about the B/W one they had last year, in the end I decided to buy a new Gen 5. As long as you have a full warranty you should be fine with a buy back, I just decided for me it was worth spending a bit more to get a car that didn't have a "story" attached to it.

Will hurt resale down the road, but depends on how long you keep the cars and all is dollars and sense. good luck try to negotiate hard.:2tu:

Did they sound like they were willing to negotiate a lot? Cause I know exactly what they paid for both cars. Also do you know how long the buy backs sat on the lot? I figured they would sit for a long time... Maybe not

Dennis is right, this has happened over the years quite a bit. If you want to sell in ~3 years, I'd stay away, if you want to keep for 5+ you'll likely be fine (and I would avail myself of the extended warranty as you will never know the real reason for the buy back).

Weirdly I have no evidence (anecdotal or otherwise) of buy back cars being worse than a "normal" purchase.

So let me ask a silly question. (Assumption) My understanding is that when a manufacturer does a "buy-back" they fix the cause of the buyback, and place the car for resale. 1 - Is the car then "Dodge Certified"? 2 - Honestly, how much is the discount from their posted "asking prices"? (Please PM me if you don't want to post on the forum)

I was trading in a Gen4, and the difference between the cars wasn't all that far off from where I would have been with a new similar Gen5 (they gave me a low trade in value compared to other places). When I talked to them I think they had just received the B/W car, after I decided it wasn't for me I didn't really pay attention how long it was listed on their site. They seemed pretty nice and answered all my questions though.

Buy back cars are like lemon law cars. Has to be disclosed at sale and most of the time manufacturers warranty is voided. Need to check the warranty. A big MUST.

Here is what Van Horne said

The SRT Viper is a manufacturer's buyback. That means it is a vehicle the manufacturer has repurchased from a consumer due to a former concern. Regardless of the concern, the manufacturer must inspect, and make any necessary concern related repairs to each vehicle. The original warranty is kept intact and automatically goes to the next owner. It also comes with a 1 year unlimited mile bumper to bumper Chrysler Manufacturer warranty!

Purchasing a buy back is a gamble. If you buy the car and everything turns out great you win. If the car has nothing but problems, you loose. The question you need to answer is whether or not it's worth the gamble?

Some of your major Dealers never buy these cars , but completely up to you and definitely there will be a hit resale wise ---- that is just borne out by what most Viper owners demand ( checkered past means less check being spent)

I know that being a sales manager at a Nissan dealership- a car coming in on trade with a bad carfax is an easy 10% drop in trade value. People generally don't want cars with a blemished past. A manufacturer buyback car is the epitome of a tarnished history (other than salvage title). Think about it. A customer that is so ********** about his car that the manufacturer is forced to lemon law the car.... bad news bear if you ask me. If I was going to buy a Viper and have it strictly be a Race car then a manufacturer buy back would appeal greatly to me. But not as a daily driver, show car- etc. Just knowing it had issues would eek my ego.

Obviously not a Viper but I bought a 2015 Cadillac Escalade with 1600 miles that was a buy back. Full Warranty in effect. Engine and wire harness on car were replaced according to GM, yes i called them directly. I got almost a 29% discount on the car. 14k later and it drives well like a cadillac. Not one problem. My understanding is that these cars are dismantled back at the factory and whatever is suspect is replaced. So if you are not considering selling the car anytime soon then go for it. My car is a daily driver and I will drive it until the wheels fall off......

I paid 79k for a base SRT viper with 50 miles on it. Clean title. Unless they are offering to sell the car for 50k run forest run. There are
13-14-15s going for less than 80 with clean titles. Please do your research before you make a mistake.

That's good to know... How are you guys still finding leftover 13s? Where are you searching?

29% off how did you source this vehicle was it at a dealer or did you find it through Cadillac?

I paid $86k (invoice) for a 2015 SRT two weeks after it hit their showroom floor. Granted no frills, but to me gets the job done.

Finding deals on 2013's is going to be tough, many of the remaining dealers have basically rebuffed anyones offers to date (which is why they still have them)

The only way I would buy a buyback is if the car were discounted at the least 50% off invoice, just my opinion on that. On most cars when purchased new you lose 30% at the time you pay for it before even driving off the lot. Some new vipers from 13/14 have been purchased close to 40% off new with no stories. New vipers have been a awesome deal with no stories at incredible discounts. I don't think a viper buyback would be a good purchase. Don't pay much attention to others saying there are no more 13/14 vipers out there without HUGE discounts, there are! Have patience and you will find one. A used 13/14 with low miles with a buyer needing a quick sale would be a better alternative. IMHO, DON'T BUY A VIPER BUYBACK you can still find a new one at the same if not better price then what they are being offered at.
