Tire repair or not to, or just buy a new one??

Just got a flat. I have the max care and tire and wheel coverage.

Is it safe to repair? i.e. @ 185MPH
Will the dealer insist on a repair or is a Z rated tire not recommeded for repair?
Has a nail about three inches from the outside edge.

Anybody know.

They will tell you they can repair it, if it isn't too close to the edge...the problem is that will lower your "z" rating to a "r" rating and won't except as high of speed...so if you can talk them into switching the tire, i would do that.

I PERSONALLY do not keep a repaired tire on a high performance car.

That said, I believe that Michelin notes that there is an acceptable way to perform some repairs(locaton and size matter) without negating the speed rating by using an internal patch with an integrated plug...assumimg also that the tire's date code is less than 6 years.

Ryan's point may be right on the money.

I am NOT sure just what speed rating that you end up with even using a "proper" plug/patch repair. This can become especially important in a Viper since "impulse" can occasionally over-ride the memory of past repairs during "spirited driving" situations.

Here's an idea I had but never used. When they do plug your tire, take it back like 2 or 3 days later and make it a few pounds low right before you get there, and do this as many times as you need to until they give you a new tire. Tell them they never fixed the problem. Haha. It's worth a try at least! You gotta get angry with them too.

Buy a new tire, i wouldn't trust some crappy plug at 185 mph much less over 100 mph. If you can afford to own a viper, then you can afford to buy a tire. Thats what i would do, why take the chance ya know?

Would it be better to have a repaired tyre of similar age and wear Patten to the other and which is never driven over 90mph (110 max) or have nice shiny new sticky rubber with double the tread depth on one side and old part worn on the other.

I'd have thought the single new tyre would be more likely to cause upset to handling at normal highway speed than a repair. On the other hand if you are driving hard/tracking then you can afford to buy two.

Ditto. If you weren't planning any major speed runs a plug/patch
would be fine, but if you're looking at attempting 185mph you need
tires at 110% (not including balancing.) Blowing a plug at that
speed would be.... well lets just say it'd be the last thing you'd
ever regret going cheap on...
