I just got my new viper after going through the horrifics of having my last one stollen and totaled. The new one only has 2000 miles on it and is in excellent condition (will have pics soon). When I was driving it home I was so in my glory that I did not notice the rattle in the tranny until my girlfriend pointed it out to me and said that it was louder than the last viper. On the way home I really noticed it at idle, actually that is the only time I heard this clunking rattling noise in the tranny. When I pushed the clutch in it would go away. Any suggestions.

Thanks,

Bill

Neutral rattle - normal.
Perhaps your other Viper had a louder exhaust, and thus the rattle was not as noticeable.;

The noise you described emanating from the transmission appears to be normal. NGR: known as "neutral gear rattle" is most evident in older model Vipers (pre '00). The more aggressive cam profile, possible non-revised trans fluid and stiffer lifters (commence for more cam duration). All these factors exacerbate the "rattle" sound you hear and can ruffle your feathers as did many Viper owners with whom experienced the same phenomena, hence, Dodge addressed these issues to a more subtle idle on newer cars :( .

Doug

Switch to factory synthetic fluid. There is a TSB on this. Someone posted it last week.

No, it's not the Throw Out Bearing. It's the tranny internals clattering.
No damage, no problem per Team Viper. The dealer has a TSB on this to replace the tranny fluid with a new brew. It will help some, but when the fluid is well warmed up there is still some rattle in that year Viper.

(This noise occurs when using the Dinan lightweight clutch in an M5, too.)

it's the throw out bearing, my '97 was very loud. they say to help a little use heavier synthetic trans fluid.
