Over the years with each generation Viper. There has alway been speculation about a change to a smaller V8 engine. The new 8.4 V10 took quite a bit of development to become a high powered normally aspirated low emissions engine. All that for a limited production motor that will only fit one low volume model and some watercraft.

Enter the new 6.4 liter Hemi with variable valve timing, dual runner intake and MDS. This engine was built to pass emissions for many years and has improvements to the block and cooling system making it a great candidate for supercharging.

I felt like the nail was in the coffin for the old V1O when Kraig Courtney engine design supervisor for SRT said that this new engine might be seen in other "high end" applications". Courtney had no further comment on that, but nevertheless an interesting thought.

Whille the new 6.4 is making 20 more hp, and only 20 lb ft less torque the the Gen II 8.0 V10 (and putting impressive track times in the Challenger), I believe it has already been confirmed that the Gen V will contine to run a V10. Actually, I think Dodge has underrated the 6.4; it's probably really 500 hp, or close to it, based on the numbers the Challys are making on the track and dyno.

IMO if it's not a V10, it's not a Viper! I would rather they kill it then to put V8 in it. A lesser motor would destroy a large part of the mystique of the Viper legend. V10 or die!!

We"ll have to wait and see of course but I will be surprised if it's another V10. If it is it will be for cost preserving vs development of a brand new engine.

Current Application -- Challenger SRT8 .
Other Applications ---
1. 300 SRT8
2. Charger SRT8
3. Jeep SRT8
4. Mystery Truck SRT8 -- rumor

Viper , V10, no rumor, just the ultimate and the 8.4 lives on, IMHO!!!

If the V10 goes away, then the title of this thread will be "Viper RIP" and we have already seen that thread title once to many times.

According to the Detriot press:

"One thing’s for certain, the 640 horsepower 8.4-liter V-10 of the current model will be replaced with a new engine. “There won’t be a part of the car that’s untouched,” Gilles said. There’s no official word on what this new engine will be but there’s rumor that it will be a variation of Chrysler’s new 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 but with some form of forced induction."

Interesting to note that even with going to smaller engines, when you add the complication of turbos superchargers or dual overhead cams, the enhanced engine ends up being just as heavy as the engine you replaced (and much more expensive).

Amazing just how far the push rod V-? engines have evolved to competing with much more complicated engines.

No matter, the new cars will be powered by new engines simply because the Fed had mandated fuel economy standards be raised. The consumer should encourage vested self interest to maintain some semblance of reality for motoring.

On Top Gear they tested a BMW following a Hybrid around a test track, with the Hybrid going as fast as it could go, and the BMW following. The BMW got far better mileage, but the EPA figues were a fantacy.

Dear Bill,

I'm with you on this one, how hard can it be to use the design of the new V8 and add two cylinders? Math tells me that the new variant V10 would probably be right around the 600 hp mark naturally aspirated, but I've heard enough hints about forced induction to not think we'll have two engines to choose from.

Regards,
Aaron

No, no, no......................it is actually 2 new 3.6 ltr Pentastars stuck together for a 7.2 liter monster. Since each is right at 300hp, added together we have a 600 hp V12 ...................and the rumors keep on coming!

Dan, sure hope they keep the 8.4 V-10, don't want it to become an orphan, aftermarket and you and Lyle will move on. Mike

That's what Roy Sjoberg said to Jim Royer and Ken Nowak in 1988.......... they took a 360 V8, added 2 cylinders, and Voila! LM-001

At VOI-Dallas, the question was asked outright, at a SRT Tech Session.......the 2 motor-men there could not keep a straight face, and did NOT reply..

The V10 is not going anywhere.

Have some faith in SRT.

Agreed. I don't think Ralph would lie to us on this. He is a Viper fan at heart just like the rest of us. If he says it's a V-10 then I believe him. The people over at SRT know there is a lot riding on this car and if they threw a curve ball like that at us (putting a V-8 in a Viper) i'm pretty sure they know it would upset a lot of loyal dodge fans. Not something they want to do i'm sure.
