One presumes, from their mewlings, that current Viper owners are so manly, so very, very macho that they spend their mornings sparring with Mike Tyson, afternoons scaling the Matterhorn sans safety ropes and their evenings satisfying previously insatiable nymphomaniacs.

I say presumes because what other conclusion can one draw from their plaints that the new Viper has been sissified. That somehow 505 cubic inches are no longer enough. That 10 monstrous cylinders are somehow too few. And that 500 horsepower is no longer sufficient to get their adrenalin pumping.

Never mind that the new Viper will spin its meaty 345/30ZR20 rear Michelins with just a whiff of throttle. Or that it accelerates so startlingly quick from 120 kilometres an hour to 250 that it's not a matter of if you will lose your driver's licence but when. Not to mention that it corners so adroitly the g-forces will banish the wrinkles from your skin.

They're pissed and they don't mind who knows about it. In fact, by Chrysler's own admission, almost half of Viper owners don't think the new version is tough enough.

The cause of all this ire? Why, the new Viper dares to have air conditioning. And, gosh darn it, it works. Which means the interior doesn't turn into a sauna every time you start the car. And that your passenger doesn't faint from heat stroke every time you go for a long drive in the country.

Or maybe it's the roof. Again, the "problem" is it actually works. It seals out the rain, it doesn't look like a bad shoe salesman's toupee and it stows oh so simply in the rear trunk. The previous R/T10's top was an afterthought that had to be stored every time one wanted to drive alfresco.

Perhaps it is that the radio now makes more noise than the valve tappets. Or that you can fit more than a woman's handbag in the rear trunk. Most probably, it's that Chrysler's styling gurus -- the best in the biz -- have managed to turn the R/T10's cartoonish muscularity into something far more attractive and, dare I say it, almost refined. Of course, if your role model is Sylvester Stallone's steroid-pumping Rambo character, then you'd probably call the new Viper "European". Which, in case you're wondering, would be an insult, a way of calling it effete.

This, of course, is that same type of idiocy that has caused many Porschephiles to lament the new 911s as too easy to drive. Indeed, it seems Zuffenhausen's taming of its wayward, rear- engined supercar has met with derision. That the car now corners better, steers more precisely and is ultimately much quicker around a race track are somehow bad things. They miss the days when a 911 Turbo rode like a truck, had a powerband like a light switch and, most of all, surprised you at the most inopportune time by losing control and becoming one with a guard-rail. Even the motivation behind their lament was the same as Viper owners. They miss the day when it took a "real man" to drive an old 911. When only the few, the brave and the foolhardy had the cojones to drive a 911 fast. Now, for God's sake, anyone can be competent behind the wheel of a Porsche.

Of course, these idiots have missed the point. The goal of progress is to improve, not regress. Engineering is the art of making things better, not worse. And making the Viper look better, ride more compliantly, drive more comfortably and go miles faster is a good thing.

Ridiculous article. It's almost as bad as how the liberals twist the news and facts.

1). I would say 90% of current viper owners don't like the new style, not just 50%.

2). I can't hear my valve tappets, they are quiet, now my miata on the other hand, I need the bose sound system to drown them out.

3). There is plenty of trunk space in the my viper. It can hold several medium sized bags or about 20 handbags.

4). A/C? I would venture to say over 90% of vipers have A/C. Mine blows cold, always has and never has a problem keeping it cold. My wife thinks it's too cold. Works much better than my miatas a/c and much, much better than my Mitsubishi Eclipses a/c worked. "passenger faint from heat stroke?" The closest the author of the article has ever been to a viper is from the driver's seat of his BMW 318.

5). He thinks the srt/10 is better looking than the "cartoon" styling of the RT/10. That alone should tell you something about this "writer". What a joke.

6). No one talks about how much they dislike the fact that the viper has more creature comforts or that it rides better, has excellent handling, more horsepower. The only complaints I have or hear about IS the styling. That is too tame, not the performance of the vehicle.

7). Writer, go back to your bmw 318 and stay away from high performance sports cars, you're way out of your element.

Excuse us (the people who buy these cars) for voicing our opinions, we must be idiots...And excuse DC for letting a Toyota engineer design the SRT's body styling...I forget, who are the idiots??? :eek:



Money says the author of this article drives a freakin Honda... :rolleyes:

I think what baffles Gen I & Gen II lovers is, the Viper was suppose to look and feel like it came from the Cobra blood lines. I don't see any Cobra or Viper traits in the new SRT/10. Granted it's a beautiful car with great performance. But it looks like their going after a whole new customer.
I wouldn't give up the looks of my 2000 GTS for the SRT/10. I think the SRT/10 may actually make the old Vipers even more valuable now.

yea, it's one thing to have an opinion on how a car looks, but to write a bunch of falsehoods such as the a/c, valve tappets and such is wrong, as well as calling us idiots.

I dont think he has ever ridden in either cars. Viper A/C is really good and the srt gets pretty hot too on the inside.

So sorry we want Heather Graham of REAL cars that know how to perform and please the true automotive enthusiasts. Completely the opossite the Rosannes like your Taurus, Civics, and Camrys that everyone else drives.

As you must know by now, there is a link to your story on the Viper Club of America message forums at vipercub.org.

I am one of the "idiots" that does not like the new SRT-10. I am aware that the performance is better than the previous car. But at least for me...styling has much to do with my initial reaction to a car. I could care less about how well it drives, if the styling doesn't "grab me".

Back to the SRT-10. I wanted to like it. I wanted to buy one. I even ordered one. I went to the NY International Auto Show twice to see it. And both times, I left feeling let down by a car that in comparision to what I had was just, so, well, bland. When it came time to buy the new one..I just could not do it. I told the dealer to sell it to someone else.

I am three time Viper owner, ('94 RT, '96 GTS and now a 2000 GTS) and one that prefers a coupe. Chrysler has decided that all they want to build is a convertible. Plus, despite all the talk of the new car actually costing less, due in part to a "normal" hood", the price rose to $84,000.

The sad part is that your story has missed the entire Viper philosophy. The Viper is a modern day Cobra. Remember them? Much like the Cobra, the Viper was not designed to coddle it's occupants. It was designed to NOT have traction control, and all the other electronic things. It was designed as a "car-guy's car", with crushing performance. This is an American car that goes toe to toe with the best performance cars the world has to offer....and sends them packing.

My GTS' A/C works fine, it rides fine and handles very well.

Here's a bit of friendly advice from one of the idiots. Perhaps you should park your Prius for the day and drive a Viper. Or, at least get a ride in one. Oh yeah, and wear your depends...you'll need 'em if the clutch gets side-stepped.

Styling was by far the major and for the most part only, complaint about the SRT/10.

Although I could do without that hole in the console that is roughly the size of a Big Gulp. Coincidence I'm sure.

Guys like him don't "get" the Viper experience anyway. Go buy a Vette.

I've tried to like the SRT-10, I really have. I am ready for a change and I desperately wanted to stay in the viper community, but I just don't like the Gen III styling. In fact it's downright boring and completely fails to achieve the level of styling excitement of its predecessors (no flames intended, it's just my personal preference).

So I'm looking at cars that I never really had a great interest in owning previously yet excite me more than the Gen III car. This leaves me conflicted. My performance criteria is fairly simple: 1) The car has to be an American two-seater; 2) it must have major league cajones and handling; and 3) it must have killer good looks! Sounds like I'm describing a Gen I/II Viper doesn't it!

And then some pansy a$$, half a *** with no clue comes along and writes a ridiculous article that doesn't even come remotely close to reality and it all just reminds of how disappointed I am in DC. I want a new car and I wanted that new car to be a Gen III Viper. Unfortunately, DC has taken that option off the table and it seems that not even time has diminished my utter dislike for the SRT-10.

I'm so crazed over the whole issue I try to ignore it by playing with my V-Rod instead. This is a very serious issue for me, as I suspect it is for many of my Viper brothers and sisters.

Man, this guy has no clue. Bottom line: If the SRT10 'looked' as sharp/mean/ominous as the Gen I/II Vipers, people would be going nuts over the Gen III.

Example - Same engine, same platform, same performance - but the Comp. coupe body/styling. Do you think anyone would be complaining? Hell no.... People would be fighting over those certificates.

It just doesn't make sense. You have a car with the biggest/badest motor on the planet, the largest/widest tires money can buy, heart stopping performance in every respect, and most importantly - a reputation for destroying ever performance vehicle in its path. Then you give it styling that is 'refined', 'toned down', 'lack-luster', 'pleasing', or whatever other terms I have heard to describe the body.

** Everything about the Viper is a cartoon, freakish, a fantasy if you will. The body should match the personality of the car, and it does not in the SRT10. Looking at the SRT10 kind of reminds me of when I first heard Mike Tyson talk. The voice did not match the person....

I'm with you guys. I personally think they should have made a completely seperate product with the SRT because it is a great car, just not a Viper.

We had the Cobra, a great car, then we have the Viper, the greatest car America has made, then we have the SRT. The SRT should have been another model, like maybe a python or some other snake name. I'm very serious about this. The viper could have continued in the tradition of the original cobra with a Viper GenIII comp coupe style car or something more along the lines of a gen I/II. To call the SRT a viper though is quite a let down.

Btw, my wife and I was at Maxwell Dodge in Austin last weekend and the owner has all three in the showroom. A 1994 red RT, a 1997 blue/white GTS and a silver SRT. My wife and the salesman liked the RT the most, I liked the GTS the most. We did think the SRT in silver looks very nice, it's very classy. Silver Python SRT, yup, that sounds better.

If you want the SRT/10 to look aggressive, simply purchase and install the Autoform body kit. I just installed a kit for a client and I must say, never in my life have I had so many people give me the "thumbs up," even when driving a GTS.

That's true, I'm sure you could do that and it would look great. But... you could do that with any car. A viper shouldn't have to have a body kit added to it to look great, the way it should have from the factory.

Maybe DC will buy the molds from autoform and start using them for 2005. After all the complaints, they will have to do something I would suspect. SRT's certainly aren't selling like the Vipers did. I don't know one person who bought a viper (either RT or GTS) or who had a voucher to buy one and was disapointed and sold it upon arrival or allowed the dealer to sell it to someone else. Of the only 2 people I personally know who had vouchers to buy SRT's (one had 2 srt vouchers, the other had several), neither one of them kept any of them. That's saying a lot. Of course, you hear a lot of this on this website. It was all about the styling, nothing about what this guy was writing about.
