In NJ just this year they did away with that awful roller dyno tailpipe inspection rig as well as no more checking of the lights, wipers, etc and suspension components.

One just pulls up to the inspector's both, surrenders ones insurance, registration and diver's licence to him. Then you roll up to the tailpipe emission area, he then sticks a tailpipe sensor rod in one of my side pipes at idle. He puts a black box at the bottom of my front windshield (not sure what the hell that box does) then gets the tail pipe reading at rest, bang we are done.

Simple and sweet. Next step I hope they do away with all emission stations in NJ.

Years and years and years ago they had inspection in FL that consisted of checking lights, brakes on a brake dyno, wipers, exhaust for leaks, etc, etc. BUT thanks to some thoughtful people in Tallahassee they got rid of all that crap which resulted in a massive savings to the state. Haven't seen inspection since and I doubt we ever will again.

There is hope for all you other people!

In PA complete inspection is done by private garages licensed by the state to do inspections. Car is put on a lift and all 4 wheels removed and tires checked. Brakes, suspension, exhaust, steering rack are all checked, along with lights, wipers, and emissions. If car is driven less than 5K miles per year (like most Vipers) it is exempt from the emissions testing. In general, i think it is a reasonably good system as it insures some compliance regarding vehicle safety. This used to be mandated every 6 months but enough people complained and it was reduced to once per year inspection.

Virginia now just looks for the CEL. for emissions, but you still have a full blown yearly inspection for everything else.

However, the emissions still have to be done at only special emissions inspections shops... the logic being they spent a fortune several years ago putting in all the equipment and should be allowed to recover the costs. I think I paid $40 for a guy to say yup, no CEL.

I've had safety inspections that can last from 5 minutes to 40 depending upon the shop. I frequent the 5 minute guys.

My favorite inspection went like this: "left turn, right, lights, horn. Ok, shut her down while we're ahead". That guy eventually got busted. I wasn't even suppose to be driving it into the garage. :nono:

I tip my new guy. It usually takes 10-15 minutes for the safety inspection, but most of that is chatting about cars or the town.

None in Washington State. So, I wonder if there has been a study to determine the safety gains vs. the cost of all this inspection nonsense. Do they actually produce tangible safety improvements?

Pooty, where are you going to pay $40? I do usually just go pay my guy $10 (don't even have to have my car with me, just drivers lic. & proof of ins.) then I go home & put it on.

Interesting. They're only measuring half the engine's emissions - one bank.

Here in TX, they do a basic lights/horn/brake performance test on everything. Certain counties/regions designated as non-attainment for Ozone have to pass an emissions test. Cars older than 1980 are exempt.

There are no car inspections or emissions tests in Michigan. Certainly makes it easier to modify a car here. Unfortunately, it also allows for some barely drive-able (and often uninsured) cars to be on the roads.

Friggin NC they have to hook your ECU up and match your VIN. Since my stock ECU is out of the car I can't pass. So my car is a florida car.

In Illinois they have to do emissions testing in the Chicago area, but not downstate because there are only a few of us rednecks down here and its all cornfields in between.

Yea some do that, some dont, I had a guy say they would do it to avoid me taking the car over the rollers & risk them damaging it, I've had some handle it like a regular car .. now in MD they do the OBD plug in rather than roller/dyno like they used to, the guys told me the rollers are being removed. My biggest pain was on my last viper, I bought it in Jan, so it would always come due when there was snow on the ground & I'd have to go in and get 2 month extensions & watch for a break in the weather. ugh

Probably getting close to 20 years ago since last inspections. But never say never. When it comes to government, if it's stupid it's always on the table.

I'm in NJ and was able to get a collector registration for my 98 GTS. I just have to take it in every 2 years and they check that I drive less than 3k a year and no obvious hazards. Normal inspection logs any OBD codes into the central data base with your vin so no way to get a sticker with a code.

If you can drive the car to the DMV... YOU PASS!!! Wait... that don't matter either. If you can pay the registration... YOU PASS!!

I used to do MO St. Louis County's Inspections... total BS. I failed once because it was raining and the ***** doing the test opened the hood and water get on the Headers and it made some steam. He said I failed because of the smoke. That was the last time I registered a car in MO. Use my fathers address ever since in IL.
