I've got 3.73's in my '01 but with 20's on the rear it's a 3.45 equivalent. I have light mods and am about 450 at the wheels with my PS2's. And can loose traction at speeds approaching triple digits.
Moral of story: Yeah, I like the quicker gears and won't argue with vancouver there on the 4.10's, but where is the traction going to come from?
Moral of story 2: Solve moral one with stickier tire?

As Dave said, the main issue is traction with the gear change.
As your HP goes up, the torque multiplication of bigger gears can quickly overcome the traction available. That is why road racers tend to stick to the 3:07 while drag racers lean to bigger gears with stickier tires available.
With big gears, even a stock Viper can easily "light em up" with just throttle, but while this is big fun on the street, it often results in a slower Viper due to tire spin.
Summary.
3:07 = Road racers and big HP cars.
3:33 for mildly modded cars who want a bit more useful 5th and 6th gears, and quicker revs.
3:45 for great street throttle response with good tires, and a couple mods.
3:54 for even more snap, and really flexible driving with 6 speed.
3:73. Easily break loose most DOT tires. Great fun, but often slower against the clock.
4:xx for drag racers with slicks, and higher rev limits.
Of course if you have special needs, such as a specific track, or drag racing, you may need to calculate gearing to give you optimum speeds for your unique Viper.
I'd like to see how is your 3.55 gearing could hang with my friend's Noble M400 that's 425 HP and only 2350 lbs 0-60 3.3 sec in stock setting.He has his ECU remapped to 450 HP with a bit more boost!
I start in second and hang with him pretty good
.The 99's 450 HP is pretty anemic for a 3400 lbs car and in need of torque multiplication IMHO.

I have 3.73s with 20" rears. That gives it basically a 3.45.
And my car is semi stock.
As for shifting, top end of 1st is 60 kph. By the time I shift to 3rd I am already 80ish (IF MEMORY SERVES....WINTER YOU KNOW!
).
As for gearing, I would say 3.55-3.45 is the best range. I love the 3.45. Gives a great middle of road. Allows decent cruising rpm, yet still great launches!

Alright, so I've read this thread several times and originally had my mind set on keeping the stock gears(3:07). My car is mainly used for street/highway and won't be tracked; however, I have thought about doing some quarter mile runs and possibly auto cross. Anyway, although I don't do any street racing and don't plan on it, the idea interests me in the sense I'd like my car to be able to compete at a competitive level if I ever wanted too. I don't ever plan on putting a super charger or turbo in my car, I simply just plan to mod the hell out of it with bolt-ons.
My current mods are below:
708 Cam, Corsa Exhaust, RandomTech High-Flow Cats, K+N Dual FIPK, KW2 Coilovers, Dave's Big Brake Kit, iForge Rims.
My current tires are below:
Michelin Pilot Sport 2, 295/30/ZR19
Michelin Pilot Sport 2, 335/30/ZR20
My future mods that I will be getting this summer are:
Headers(either American Racing or Belanger), Gunmetal Silver Shaft mount T&D Roller Rockers, Quality High-temp Wires, Chromoly Flywheel, SCT Handheld Tuner.
**By the way if anyone has any good suggestions on other mods worth doing for performance let me know.
So from reading about gears as much as I have, it seems like if your car is heavily modded(super charger/turbo) you would want the lower number(3:07, 3:23, 3:33) and for most street and N/A cars(3:45, 3:55, 3:73)
So as I previously stated, my car won't ever have over 700rwhp, but this summer I'm hoping from all the new mods I'm doing with the current ones I already have I can be close to 500rwhp, however in reality I'm assuming it would be safe to say I'd at least be near 465-480rwhp. I'm not positive if I will do heads or a more aggressive cam next year, if I did I would imagine I'd be up around 550-570rwhp. With that said, putting down this kind of power.. I'd say at least 470rwhp, what gear would be best? Also, if you're putting down up around 550rwhp, what would be best?
I know Dave and Mopar Boy stated they are running 20s so the equivalent of their 3:73 is really 3:45. Now in reality, with all the mods I have and will be doing, would 3:33 be ideal? If so... I'm assuming to have 3:33 in reality I'd be getting the 3:55s for my car running 20s?
It kinda ***** knowing changing the gears affects your top speed, it's just nice to know this car stock can hit up in the 180s-190s, but in reality I don't plan to ever go that fast, although I'd like to
It seems from what I've heard and read the top speeds and gearing are:
3:07 = 185+mph
3:33 = 175mph
3:55 - 165mph
3:73 = 155mph
**And I'm assuming with my 20s on the rear I wouldn't get any of those top speeds with those gears anyway if I tried..
I'm also huge in acceleration.. So 0-60 times and quarter mile times matter a lot to me.
Would anyone have an estimation or rough idea of how my car would perform 0-60 and also quarter mile times when all the mods have been installed? Probably a stupid question to ask, but I've never timed it, and was wondering depending on which gear I got, how much quicker the acceleration would be. I know having 20s will prob slow things down a bit, plus my custom sub box and two 10" subs in the trunk(
although I removed the spare tire so there is no more weight from that). But I just thought I'd find out some in depth info. I spoke with JonB last Friday about it, and plan on talking to him again. If the Viper stock does 0-60mph in about 4.0-4.4sec and does the quarter mile in about 12.2-12.3sec I'd really hope in the end I could have my car breaking the 4sec 0-60mark and also breaking the 12sec quarter mile time. Does that seem possible with all the mods I will have plus my tire sizes and audio system?
