First off, this topic will cover Viper racing, memorabilia, classifieds, events/gatherings, and the SRT/10. But mainly it will cover the GTS and RT/10, so here you go...

We here in Kansas City were VERY excited about Viper Days coming to the upper Midwest - Iowa to be exact. Well, I was excited anyway. I sent out several e-mails to our fellow KCVCA members and we ended up getting some interested folks. We met bright and early in Overland Park and headed north. Yours Truly took the lead with a Valentine One and Norman's 2-way radio. We then met up with some of our St. Joseph members around 8:45. Then we were off!

We looked pretty darn spiffy on the way up and attracted quite the convoy of onlookers:

We then arrived at the track (after a grueling 1.7 miles on a gravel road - I think that took us an hour by itself) and were escorted to a spot right by the staging lanes which had been designated for the Kansas City Club. In a sea of Vipers, we had our own little shoreline!

We got a very nice package deal from the folks at Viper Days, which included lunch, a commemorative T-shirt, and a few laps around the track with a pace car. The guys from our club generously suggested I be first in line, but somebody from South Dakota somehow got there before me in his red RT/10. No matter, it made for an interesting perspective: The pace car was a red 2003 SRT/10!

The guys behind me were pretty amused: We got some decent speeds going by the third lap or so. Yet here was this idiot trying to take pictures with one hand and driving with the other (yeah, I need a camera mount someday). And then my wife (who stayed home for three baseball games with our sons) decided that would be a good time to call. Heading into a tight turn, I am juggling a camera and a cell phone. Thankfully, I am just a wicked-good driver, so I probably could have made a cup of coffee at the same time... (grin) Some of the pictures weren't the best (I shot over 300 pictures yesterday), but I liked this angle of the SRT/10 anyway:

Now for a brief commentary on the SRT/10. I have withheld virtually all comment on the new car until I saw it in person. Well I did see it yesterday. My thoughts? It is NOT as "outrageous" as the current model(s). It is NOT as striking and is certainly more average looking than what we are driving today. Did I like it? It took me a little while. When I approached it in it's "hands off" security roping, I was underwhelmed. Like I said, it simply does not grab your attention like the current cars. It would look silly with stripes (my opinion anyway), so there goes that attention getter. I definitely liked the interior better, especially the seats. The taillights are very cool (clear lenses) and the headlights are also an improvement (and supposed to be state-of-the-art high-intensity bulbs too). Still, it didn't blow me away like I had hoped it would. But wait, there's more.

Two things happened that changed my mind:

1. I saw it on the track. Remember my vantage point on the parade laps? I gotta tell you, the car may not be as striking as the GenI/II cars, but it DOES look pretty dang good going down the road. Look at that last picture. See the way the wheels fill those wells? How about the way the car is "flared" and up a little higher in the back than the front. Definitely a Viper, especially with the side cutouts. Mind you, I LOVE the current Viper and will probably be buried in my GTS, but when the red RT/10 and red SRT/10 were right there in front of me, the RT looked a little dated and the SRT looked like a modern muscle car.

2. I talked to the drivers. No, not the Kansas City owners (who, BTW, represented four SRT/10 orderers out of the ten that came up), but the door-to-door race drivers. Now these guys KNOW performance cars. Almost without exception, they LOVE the new SRT/10. One guy's family has ordered three of them. Why? They say the car will have some of the best brakes on ANY car out there - without modifications. They say that the car will be pushing closer to 525 horsepower out of the box. They say that it handles BETTER than the current cars. They say the build quality will be even better, as the design is for a better "fit". They are extremely fired up about this car. After watching it make the rounds, I have to tell you that I am too.

Okay, back to the action! Here is another shot of the SRT/10 pacing the door-to-door race at 4:00:

And here is the field of cars. Now HERE are some Vipers!

And they're off!

They scoot around the turns and look oh-so-good doing it:

Look out! Cold pavement and aggressive driving can lead you into trouble. Fortunately, the excellent design of the MidAmerica Motorsports complex allow for some exciting "offroading" with no damage to worry about...

Indeed, even some of the best drivers try to take a shortcut. Now we know why some people lovingly refer to him as Woodchuck:

Not to worry, the cars clean up nicely when you get them up to 140 mph or so:

I forgot to mention that there were some pretty nifty paint jobs all around the place. I think I got a picture of just about all of them. Here is a color you don't see very often:

And there is always the classic Daytona set up, driven by Bernie Katz, of course:

Oh, and you said Vipermad was a poser? I think not!

Now I didn't get as good a vantage point for the other cars outside of the door-to-door racing. I settled for taking pictures of them as they stood still. There were lots of great paint jobs, but here are a few of the more interesting ones:

Of course, if you want to buy from a private party, our own Mr. Stafford is selling his very unique GTS. It is a '99 with a Connolly interior, custom copper stripes, and custom side exhaust. Randy wasn't shy about advertising it either:

One of my other favorites belonged to "Evil" Joe Ellis. Sure, his GTS is black with some silver highlights like mine, but not quite the same arrangement of paint:

He had GREAT graphics on every side of the car, including a very amusing "Pass on this side" graphic not necessarily for the kiddies. Now, if you thought these race Vipers were just like the one in your garage, guess again. Here is the interior of Jeff Johnson's. While at first glance it may look kinda like your car, rest assured that there is not a single gauge in there that matches yours:

Whew! It was a long day and I thought I would mention a couple other things. I met Courtney Thomas and some of the Viper Days crew and they were GREAT. They treated us like visiting royalty, despite the fact that we were just spectators and posers

. I also got to spend some time with our VCA president, Tony Estes. At the risk of sounding like a brownnoser, let me tell you that this is a great guy to be running the show. He knows his race Vipers, can talk 'til he is blue in the face about the new Vipers, and really makes you even more proud to be a Viper owner - rich or poor. Despite being tugged in every direction, he spent some time with our local club and really made us feel like a part of the family. He wasn't the aloof, unapproachable guy that the cigar indicated...

Thanks Tony. Oh, and that "Chuck with Two Vipers" guy from Florida? No sooner had I arrived to introduce myself, when he sent me off to go fetch him some water. Then he dared me to "moderate him" while waving a tire iron menacingly. It was a pretty scary experience, and that was before he took his shirt off and started asking passersby to "count his chest hairs". But seriously folks, don't let him fool you - he is one of the most genuine people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Make sure you look him up at one of these Viper Days venues or VOI 7!

It was an exciting day and we met tons of great people. The food was good, the track was immaculate, and the racing was awesome. There were more Vipers than you could shake a stick at, including the Competition Coupe and the 2003 SRT/10. I came away pleasantly surprised by the SRT/10, and only amused by the Competition Coupe - given the price, the criteria to own one, and the street-legalness of it, it is not in my league. So, our group disbanded during different parts of the day. Some went to check into the hotel for an overnight stay, while others headed back early. When it was time for me to head home, I found myself in good company: All of the GTS's (and all w/stripes) had stayed behind. Coincidence? Hmmmm...

Great pics Chris. I expect nothing less from you. All that practice taking pics of your garage queen really pays off. It must've been heartbreaking for you, Performan Norman and the rest of the Kansas City Kandyasses to drive that gravel road. Very courageous. Congrats. I hope y'all brought plenty of Z6. Not so sure about your "wicked" driving skills since you and your creampuff buds have never been on a track without a pace car in front of you. Guess I’ll have to take your word for it.

I’m still in Iowa visiting my Bro, his wife and my 6 month old nephew. When I get home I’m gonna post pics of the kid and get even with all you proud Dads that have posted pics of your kids.

Anyone notice how lowered the SRT is? What's the deal, they do the same thing at the auto show! All of the real world pictures posted on here show the car having a comparable gap from fender to wheel to the current cars.

Bill "The ****" Pemberton right? What do I win Chris?

P.S. I think it was the Woodhouse license frame that gave it away!

With due respect to Gerald's personal opinions, Chris's photos just continue to fuel the fire that I must own a SRT-10 soon! If we all liked the same things, it would be a less interesting world.

Chris, thanks for the terrific photos and the insightful commentary...it made us all feel like we were there too!

WOW, the SRT-10 looks beautiful in the photos and just imagine how much faster it will be when there's a race between one and the old RT-10 when a rainshower threatens! It used to take me 5 minutes to unfold the toupe. The SRT has a top design that will allow 30 second changes! I used to be so embarassed about letting anyone see how bad the folding roof was, I would park far away from everyone. Finally, I started leaving the hardtop on 95% of the time. I eventually learned to remove it by myself like tossing a pizza. I cannot wait for the SRT...but I still miss my '99!!!!!!!! The styling of the gen 1 and 2 cars will rule forever as it shows in these AWESOME pictures!

Ok .... I can not resist .... That SRT-10 will dog your Gen I or Gen II Viper. That said, I will be purchasing a Gen II Viper early next year (only because I can not afford the SRT-10)

Nice story and pics, enjoyed them, especially the SRT-10.

Unfortunatley the scale is tipped even more to the "What the hell is DODGE thinking" side..

That SRT-10 looks downright hideous!! Looks really nice for a older couple with the wife in the passenger seat wrapped up in a scarf with the big rim sunglasses on. :****:

Just my opinion..

Gerald
