I am just wondering how many of you guys have weighed your vipers and if they are less than stock what exactly did you remove to get your weight loss.

I just weighed mine today and my Hennessey 650R weighed 3420lbs w/~15 gallons of fuel. I had probably 10-15 pounds worth of junk in my car also so I guess my car would weigh ~3300lbs or less with a minimal amount of fuel in it. My car car has the full hennessey package and is claimed to weigh 3250lbs but I can live with it being a little off. I am not sure what has taken the weight off but maybe someone out there has actual numbers for each component change.

The reason why I ask this question is that there is weight that can be saved and I am looking for some more weight savings.

My buddy and I were in the car with the G-Tech doing 0-60 times and the best I could get, in my stock viper, was 4.3 seconds. I did about 10 runs with him in the car and then he got out and I immediately run 4.2seconds three times. What a difference 190lbs makes!

I am not saying I can lose 190lbs but it sure would be nice to hear how much carbon fiber components save in weight and other weight saving components. I know taking out the spare tire can save some but what else?

Lets make this a good thread of reference so whenever we want to save weight we can just go to this thread and go through the checklist produced by all of us!!

Thanks for all your input!

Rule of thumb 200lbs = .1/seconds

I'm curious as to how many owners would be interested in a carbon fiber stock replacement hood?

Getting rid of the exhaust will save some weight.A non-stainless side pipe car although ratty sounding will shave off some weight. The rear tire probably doesn't hurt(good spot for the drags).Other than stripping out the interior panels, carpeting, sound deadening,no glass,no spare seat,no ac,no radio etc....You may have to go with different body panels. 1) The place i would start first is to get as much weight off of any rotating mass, like an Aluminum Flywheel, lighter wheels and half shafts, and an under drive crank pulley (they weigh a lot less and increase HP also).
Those are the first four upgrades i would do to lose some (car) weight.
2) Remove cats and side mufflers (get an exhaust system, most dont include those parts)
3) The (Street headers) in the Mopar catalog weighs lot less then stock headers (23 lb lighter)
4) Removing the A/C and stereo +speakers +amp would save a lot of weight, but you would have a boring/Hot car.
5) Viper Speed ( http://208.50.45.42/new/default.htm ) offers Lexan Windshields and Plexiglass Rear Hatch Windows, that should shave a few pounds off.
6) Bucket/racing shells are not a bad idea
7) i think the STOPTECH brake kit is a bit lighter then stock, not sure though.
8) Remove all carpet/sound deadening materials and heat shields.
9) After the above, you get to the real expensive stuff, like replacing body panels/hood/doors with carbon fiber.

3380 lb. with fuel tank ~ 1/2 full (99 ACR with a/c and stereo).

I installed a full Belanger header/exhaust system w/o cats and weighed all components on a crude scale. I determined that the OEM system w/cats weighs the same as the full Belanger system w/o cats but with extra side sill mufflers. I was hoping for some weight savings but none was found. An aluminum flywheel and lighter disc brake rotors are in my future.

3340 lbs,, with 3/4 of a tank and verified at two Elevator scales 5 miles apart. This was when the car was totally stock with no add-ons, but it seems to bear out what most folks come up with.

My Viper weighed in at 3450 without me in the car and with a bit over a half a tank of gas. This measurement was at a truck stop scales.

My brother's 3000 GTVR4 weighed 3850 and our Z06 weighed 3150 all on the same scales w/o driver and about a half a tank.

Here are 395 pounds of weight savings figures from preparing several of the Desert Venom GTS race Vipers (the first 3 items are imprecise and from memory only):

Side exhaust with no cats 40
Fat Albert's lightweight hood 50
Tilton flywheel and clutch 40
Passenger seat 35
Race seat vs. driver seat 18
Heater core assembly 10
Blower motor 6
A/C compressor & clutch 14
Side windows, trim, guides 24
2 door panels with liners 14
Radio system,speakers, amp 22
Air bags, modules, supports 13
Roof/Headliner 9
Rear Lexan hatch window 25
Misc int. trim panels 41
Interior carpet kit 34

Unfortunately we have to add approximately 150 pounds of weight with full roll cages and other safety equipment. Our cars end up weighing approximately 3,030 pounds without fuel or driver. I carry 71 net pounds of ballast to make my required minimum weight of 3,100 pounds without fuel and driver in the Viper Racing League. With full fuel and driver, my car weighs 3,400 pounds and that is usually the scaled weight used when we corner-weight and align my car, plus or minus a few pounds.

Mine weights 3375# with just about 1/2 tank. ('96 GTS) However, the fuel gauge is so screwy I never know how much is really in it. It's either full or less than full. I use the trip meter to help figure it out.

So Frank, where exactly do you put that 71# of ballast?

I rented the Viper for a booth at McCormick place some months ago. They have you weigh in prior to driving into the shows. With a 1/4 tank of gas and the mods below it weighed 3,380.

Hey Vetter, how come you don't put your 1/4 times in your "typical Corvette" sig???

Also, based upon the above information, I believe we can safely conclude that a Gen II GTS has a curb weight of ~ 3450 lb. Dare I say that a trip to the "fat farm" wouldn't be too out of line!

at least he left out all the little graphics and animations that flood each post on the corvette forum.....

I hope it doesn't happen over here, or gets banned.... VERY annoying.... an avatar is enough....

my 1996 GTS was 3335 pounds with 1/4 tank of gas....

Brooks, did you sell your car by the sounds of it? If yes, what's the new wheels???

Have to love the consistency of those C5's that can post top speed to the hundredth of a mile an hour, very impressive, the trick is to hit top end, retrieve a coffee from the cupholder and wave with the open hand to all the other C5's you pass....

Nonetheless, the numbers are impressive......

The braking #'s are really impressive (if those are real). What setup do you have? The Dilusi site says you have their Stage III setup (new rotors only) but your sig lists Wilwood calipers. Which is it? I would love to have that sort of braking power...

Hey Darth, all in good fun ,had to toss a C5 quipp or 2 in there for good measure, although that never happens on the vette boards when the viper clan post some info!!!!!haha, right

The one serious drawback to performance is weight with the Viper, no doubt, all these notes on weight savings bring the numbers down to stock C5 levels or not even, with $$$$$ quickly climbing to get there.
In my opinion this is what keeps the C5, more specifically the Z's in the same "area" of performance, say .5 or so????
To only imagine what 3000 wet pounds would do the mid 11 club with mild mods, yikes.......
After careful consideration of an untapped niche for a booth at VOI, I have come up with "on the spot liposuction", 10% off to all VCA members, any takers? All removed material will be added to Darth's Z in Ziplocks to help with hp/lb ratio.....
On that note, I'm off for some food,

Happy motoring,
Ryan
