So what type of oil should I use? On my previous car, I used Royal Purple. Is this a good choice for the Viper?

Also, what oil filter should I use?

Thanks

Kinda like toothpaste or soda, everyone is gonna like something just a bit different. I've heard nothing but good things about RP.

I run Redline in all of my cars and use Mobil 1 filters.

Any reason for choosing Redline over Royal Purple? I have heard good things about Redline, though, so I may be tempted to switch.

Tastes great AND it's less filling. :p

Habbit more than anything...buy it by the box from a guy in MD who doesn't charge shipping, and have just done so for years.

I'm curious, do the synthetic transmission fluids smooth out some of the notchiness of the T-56?

You bet !
Shifts like a dream now after using the Amsoil...

Yea, I am thinking about changing tranny fluid also. Shifts are very notchy. I have experienced this before with another car; put in Redline tranny fluid and shifts became much smoother.

Just out of curiosity, if the Manufacturer recommends Mobil 1 oil and you elect to use another brand of oil (Royal Purple,K-Mart,Sludge El Cheapo, etc) and you have an engine failure, aren't you possibly at risk for DC to invalidate any warranty work due to not using the recommend oil? Just asking.

No, your warranty cannot be voided if the lubricant meets the lube and oil specs. given by DC(or any other company) for your vehicle. As a matter of fact if I remember right, my owner's manual states 'or equivalent' for all the oil&lube fluids.

As for my car..it is Amsoil from front to back including the air/oil filters and the grease. I run Series 2000 0W-30 about 6000 miles between changes. Oil analysis done every change. Results come back perfect every time. The oil could be used longer. This last batch had one track day(Blackhawk), 2 drag strips--about 15 passes, and 4 autocross events over 5900 miles. 32,000 miles on the car since we bought it,new, 3 years ago.

Engine: Castrol RS 10W60 Synth
Trans: Dextron II ATF
Axle: Motorex 75W140 Synth for Limited slip Diffs.

I tried a few synthetic 75W Fluids, but the transmission was hard to shift... Especially under cold Wheater conditions i had allways this "crunchy" noise shifting through gears (in our Area the Temperatur is mostly between 40 and 85°F from Spring to Autumn).
So i went back to Dextron II and try to live with this "gear rattle" in Neutral position.

i use castrol syntect (fully synthetic) 5w-50 with k&n gold performance oil filter. it traps 10 microns. in the future when i start road racing my viper i will switch to a thicker oil that being mobil 1 synthetic 15w-50. if i lived in a cold climate i would use valvoline 5w-40 full synthetic for the street.

Mobil 1 10-30 for street Viper. Mobil 1 15-50 for race Viper. Stock Mopar oil filter for both. Why use anything other than Mobil 1 oil or a stock oil filter? We've used this for over 6 years road racing our Vipers without failure. Also, years ago it was well-documented that Viper owners were having serious issues with Red Line in the tranny. We had an expert chime in to give us the technical reason. Unless Red Line has changed, caution is advised.

I switched over to AMSOIL for the engine, trans and rearend. Very satisified. Best mileage on a trip with Mobil 1 was 22, after AMSOIL 25.5 mpg. Maybe this is a coincidence, but, I am sold on AMSOIL! Check out AMSOIL.com and look at the comparison statistics to Mobil 1 and other oils. Mobil Oil Company could not provide comparison data to other manufacturers when I inquired, wonder why?? :usa:
