I was not implying that the wheel hop was either desirable or designed by DC that way. If you read what I said that "the wheel hop can definitely be a problem", But it can be overcome by driving the car differently and under the right conditions. DC should try to alleviate the problem because when it happens it is not pleasant. The main point I was trying to make was that they didn't design the car to sit there and spin its wheels !!!

I wasn't coming down on you, I was coming down on the DC engineers. My point is that if you design a car with that given HP and Torque, it should be able to handle it in many driving conditions. I haven't heard any of my Ferrari friends complain about wheel hop with all the HP they have and traction control turned off.Just my frustrated .02.

I agree, DC has some work to do. Some of the other Viper owners say Motons stop the wheel hop and provide a much better ride, if thats the case DC should be putting them on our VIPERS.

Simply remove the front sway bar and most of your wheel hop issue will be solved. Daily driving is unaffected, serious road racers will see a difference.

I didn't experience much wheel hop before I got the 3.54 gears. However, my Ford GT w/ over 645 FT-LB RWTQ has no wheel hop (it has Motons on soft). So I'll have to say the Viper has the "tendency" to wheel hop. I'm getting softer springs for the ACR (maybe 900 vs. factory's 1100 LB-IN) and maybe that will help a bit.

When I first got my 06 coupe the wheel hop the spin and fishtail was very bad even in the summer months. I took the Viper out to the country roads for testing and a couple of times I almost wheel hopped & fishtailed into a corn field. Back then I solved another problem I had, when I drove the Viper hard, by wearing depends.;)

Some changes I made to solve the wheel hop & fishtail

-Motons helped
-Went with the Pirelli 18 & 19" tires- less wheel hop but a lot of spin.
-Went with the Hoosier A6-no wheel hop or fishtail-but very low wear and not good in rain. They do stick like glue.
-Got the 19" Michelin Sport Cups with the Woodhouse mounts and Quaife. Never wheel hops or fishtails even with a SC install but the Michelin Cup tires will spin in the cool weather until I warm them up real good.
-Still keep the depdnds handy:)

In my case-I think the right kind of tire made a big difference.

The A6 was a unbelievable sticky tire-I really miss those tires.

As far as I am concerned I am glad ACRBruce revived the thread. Some good info on a still present problem on some Vipers.

I don't have wheel hop with my set up but still have a lot of spin in cold weather with the Cups on the rear. The only tire that really reduced the spin even in cold weather was the A6's. Just a little warm up, and I mean a little, they were ready to go. But as mentioned the A6 had its drawbacks.

I just can't let this go. Did the DC engineers design the rear end to hop and the whole car to shake when you apply the HP and Torque they designed the car to have?

OOPS!!! Didnt see the date.

They designed this car to win. Period. Not burn the tires off of it. Its not the 1960s any more. Grow up, get over it, and learn how to drive the car. This car was designed to go fast and get there is a hurry. Not sit at the light while the Vette guy is half way down the road.

My thoughts exactly. Wheel hop can be solved with stickier tires, but then the "smokey burnouts" will suffer lol

When I do a hard acceleration with my 04 SRT-10, my shift handle shakes back and forth a lot when the rear wheels hop? Do you think my transmission mounts are broken or is this normal?

Thanks, Bruce

I heard from many on this board that switching the tires out for PSll does the tricks.

I race in SCCA's ProSolo at times - two cars line up side and side at the light tree just like at a drag strip and once the lights goes amber, amber, amber, then green, two car start in a straight line side by side and after say 500' or so then the course is split into identical left and right halves with the left lane car turning left and the right lane car turning right, whoever comes back first wins. I am getting hooked in this as this is really fun to do as I can practice perfect launches for time as well as taking the car 10/19th in a safe environment. In this case, the less wheel hop I get, the more I can apply the power. I'm not interested in doing burnouts either. The problem w/ tires is that in this kind of starts, there's no chance to get the tire hot enough and I'm already using Kumho and Hoosier semi-slicks but even these kind of tires will need one or two corners to get up to 140 degrees and higher.

10/19th effort? I'd try a little harder... ;)

Really, glad to see a Viper AX. Good fun.

Hey 10/19th in a safe environment is really safe driving. OOOOOOOOPS... I meant to say 11/10th or 12/10th. Oh, never mind.....

My '08 ACR (on PS Cups) wheelhops terribly, and I mean terribly. I've never driven a car that wheelhops this bad. The rear wheels sometimes even hop when they lock due to braking.

I've got the Woodhouse mounts, but I'm not sure those help. Damper settings don't seem to help either. Higher tire pressure (to about 33 psi cold) does seem to help a bit, but that generally more than I like to run.

Maybe control arm bushings might be the answer? That cured hop on my C5...

do the 08-09s wheel hop less without the run flats? My 04 wheel hopped, and I was hoping that it was not as bad with the new factory rubber on the 08 I am going to get

Dump the clutch at a higher rpm. Wheel hop comes when the tires are starting to gain grip. I know this works because I burned my runflats up from 1/2 tread to the steel belts in a span of about 20 minutes. No wheel hop at all. I can lay a long smokey burnout with PS2's. Drop clutch at 3500 to 4000 rpm's. Just remember to practice in a open parking lot. :)

Thought some more... Drifting. We need to ask the Flying Swede what they do to the drifting Viper suspension to prevent wheel hop. Anybody have a contact?

Can you compare the wheelhop tendency of the Viper to that of the GT for us? (I won't ask about the Lotus.)

The GT with 730 WHP doesn't hop at all, not even with cold tires. It just puts the power down and scoots. Maybe the mid-engined design contributed somewheat but I think the Viper can do better beccause there's still over 50% of its weight in the back w/o driver and I'd bet w/ driver, the % is even higher.
If you look at this video, you'll see the rear end of the car is already moving side to side a little but there's absolutely any wheel hop to speak of. And the car was still on OEM Goodyear F1 tires.

Bruce, for the last several years, Pro Solo had done 4 runs back-to-back-to-back, so it's really only an issue on the first of those 4 runs. You can do a burnout too if you wish.

Wheelhop *****, and breaks stuff if you let it - I always back out of the gas when it starts. For those with adjustable shocks, additional damping will help control it, but it's a shame to do so if you already have the handling all dialed in.

I replaced the motor and transmission mounts with Woodhouse/Snake-Oyl mounts, mounted Michelin NON Run Flat PS2 tires and the wheel hop was eliminated.
