Is there any easy way to check the condition of the rear gear oil without removing the rearend? Didn't the earlier vipers have them? I seem to recall that my 95 had one.

I do not believe any year came equipped with a drain plug. Your choices are to **** it out, or drill and tap the case to facilitate routine draining (I don't believe removing the carrier assembly is a realistic option). I chose the latter and had success drilling and tapping the case. As a result, I now have the ability to readily change the lubricant which many profess to be a critical maintenance issue on a Viper.

I acquired a flush fitting 1/8" plug from McMaster Carr; www.mcmaster.com or telephone them at 404.346.7000. The part number of the pipe plug is 4534K11.

good luck ......

Easy to vacuum drain. Go to WWW.overtons.com and get a device used to drain oil from boat blocks. About $39 for mine. I can change rear diff fluid in under 30 minutes now.

You will never get all of the metal particles out by sucking it out with a pump. I have a write-up with photos, for adding the drain plug and it is very easy. E-mail me and I will send it to you in a Word file.

Jerry, I think you should send it to [email protected] and have it included in the ILLUSTRATED UPGRADES Section.

Marv - I posted it here a while back and Jay said that he was going to add it to "Illustrated Upgrades," but he never did. I'll send it again if he asked me for it.
