Who has a Locking Gas Cap?

Wondering what your reasons were for getting it?

I've had a few people mess with my car, nothing that didn't come off luckily but I imagine something in the gas tank would be a huge problem.

Just seems like a hassle to use a key each time to fill up and possibly dangerous if you lose it...

Mine came with a locking gas cap. I keep the key on the same ring as the car key and it hasn't been annoying so far. I'm glad that I have it just in case.

Siphoning gas is the more common issue leading to the locking gas cap. It has happened to at least two people I have known over the years. But vandalism, whether random or targeted, is always a possibility. I think the average person just assumes that fuel door on an SRT is remotely released from inside the car like on almost everything else. The problem with even the remote-release type is that, being made of plastic, they can easily be jimmied open and then you have paint/body damage in addition to no gas. One other thing in our favor-- if you were broke and trying to siphon somebody's gas, which car would you pick-- the conspicuous, eye-grabbing sports car or something else that looks like no one would bother watching out for?

The OEM gas cap matches the hood latch opening from the outside of the car. If you have to worry about someone messing with the car, you should not have this car, this is not a car to be left out of sight, unless in your garage.

Yes but the alarm goes off when hood latch is opened and car is locked. Should be the same for gas cap...


Any how looks like with every other car the end users have more brains than designers.


I wont always be able to watch my car in every instance, so it's a thought. Who knows what people will do and it's best to disarm them

I've messed around with aftermarket locking gas caps before, and they all seem to have one thing in common: they don't seal nearly as well as the factory pieces, at least not the ones I've seen and had. It makes them much more likely to throw a code for evaporative emissions, and is why I just don't trust them.

+1. I bought mine from Napa for $15 shortly after I bought the car. No hassles and no worrying about anyone putting anything into the tank.

I have the stant one. I did get a CEL a couple times from not sealing. Now, I press hard when clicking it shut. I also hold it in position when turning the key so I don't losen it any. With it attached to the keychain you have to be careful not to scratch the paint too.

Bought mine from local auto store for maybe $20. Had it couple of years...no issues. Same folk that are inclined to key a car/slash a tire etc, will see if gas cap will open. It's not a daily but drive it 2-3 times a week, the 4 minutes to work. Park it in same spot in faculty area, so know all cars around (we all have campus stickers).

From what I know there is a anti-siphoing ball in the line to prevent siphoning. I know that for sure as my Lightnings have it as
I tried to siphon gas. The one problem is that although the ball may prevent gas from being siphoned if some low life wants to put something into your tank they will if you don't have the LGC the only option is to get a cap. I agree that it really is for piece of mind.

I have a locking gas cap I bought from mopar on my 08 ACR. I really don't need it since the only place my car sits out for any length of time is at work and my officers keep a camera trained on my Viper. No problem with it sealing though.

I like the Stant locking gas caps. Mine flipped the CEL on both my 10 Viper and 09 Z06 right after installing, but I cleared the code and have had no problems since. The Stant caps are durable and good quality, and you can find them at any auto parts store. Here's the Stant part # for Gen III and IV Vipers.

Does it have a lanyard like the factory one? Also can you get it keyed to the factory key?

Several years ago a bunch of us were going cross country to an event and stopped in a motel. One of our guys went out about 1:00 am for a smoke and found 2 guys in a Corvette trying to put something in the gas tank of one of our Vipers (they had the filler doors of two others open). Evey since then I have kept locking caps on my Vipers. The Stant brand works well, but you have to pay attention when putting it on. Apply it carelessly and you will throw a code. You can find them at Auto Zone, or any other good quality auto parts store (on online).

So far as I know you cannot find one with a retainer, nor the ability to convert to the ignition key. One disappointment: A year or so ago I lost my key(s) to one of my caps. I took it to a trusted mechanic to get the cap off. He just grabbed it with a big pair of vice grips and flipped it right off -- so, while they will prevent the casual intruder, don't think they will securely protect your tank from everyone!
