Why the skip shift?

OK, I know what it is, how it works, and how to disable it. But what is the official reasoning behind the skip shift? I thought it was just a Viper thing until I saw it in my friends ZO-6. I can't think of one good reason to go from 1st to 4th.

I think it sort of backfires on them. It is "supposed" to save gas. But so many people give it more gas to eliminate the skip engagement.

I thought it was emissions related... but either a) drive faster or b) install the eliminator for $25 and you are good to go. BTW - the eliminator that Summit Racing sells for the Z06 is the same one that works on the viper.

It is necessary to maximize mileage on the Federal fuel economy standard test. This is where the numbers posted on your window sticker are arrived at. Higher numbers are better as there is a penalty for lower mileage vehicles. The more hi mileage cars that are sold allows for more low mileage (but more profitable) cars to be included in the Corporate mix.

I don't know about you guys but when I enagage the skipshift, there's something about the 500rpm lugging at 20mph that just doesn't feel right. I personally hate it and avoid it at all costs (with the rare occasion of getting caught in the rain).

On a "99", just pull the plug at the tranny and no more skip-shift. No code problem. :D

I just unpluged it and covered the pluges to keep the dirt out of them. Works fine.

You can also install 3.73 gears which makes it hard to shift quick enough to catch a skip shift. :usa:
