Would you give up your SRT for a Gen I or II?

Probably not...although it was a ride in a red '94 that first got me hooked I'm really happy with my '06... On the other hand I LOVE Sapphire Blue on a GTS, so maybe for that specifically.

I've had a Gen 1,2 and 3 and I have to say that the Gen3 can't be touched when it comes to handling, braking and performance, however,my gen 1and 2 had the ultimate in "WOW" Appeal. I would not get rid of my SRT-10.

No way! While I love the looks of the Gen 1/2s (I had a 98 RT/10) the Gen 3/4s are way better cars and I think they look terrific. Last week I took my 08 Vert (see my Avitar) to a cruise night. There was a silver RT parked across from me. My car got waaaaay more attention than the silver RT. Could be the color combo on my car, the Viper Bright Blue and Silver stripes are stunning in person. In any event I'll keep the SRTs

Sorry, I have a couple of friends that have RT/10's and GTS's, and after having rode in one at 22, I thought I would never want to own one. It was nice to look at, and had a huge wow factor, but I guess I wanted it to be a better car.

When I sat in a Gen III 2 years ago, I thought I might actually get a Viper that I could enjoy (driving, not JUST looking at it) and haven't looked back since I got my 08 coupe. The older cars look cool, and will always stay in my heart as my "dream car", but that dream was made real the day I bought my 08. :2tu:

Pure driving experience, the simple answer is "no". To go to car shows, where the biggest thing is talking around, I would love to have a a GEN II 96' GTS for that, as they are really something to look at. Never get tired of looking at those 96' GTS cars.

The answer like someone else posted here is to own both. :)

Gbatejan, that is a knock out color combination. Before I read this thread I was admiring your avatar on another thread and thinking, "what a great color combo". Ill bet you do get a lot of attention. Way to go!!:2tu:

A Black on Black '99 ACR would be tempting, but honestly, I never even drove a Gen1/2 Viper.

Probably not, as I know I wouldn't even want to put miles on a car like that. Or mod it.:dunno:

I get a kick out of statements like "The Gen 3,4 are much better cars". Not that any Viper is a bad car but exactly what is so much better in the newer cars? Interior? Ok, it is nicer looking but the GTS is VERY comfortable and the pedals are better spaced. Brakes? Ok, the new Vipers have better brakes but unless you are road racing the car, the GTS brakes are fine. Interior heat is much worse in the Gen 3 than in the GTS. Outward visibility is better in the GTS. They both have their virtues but I don't think one is that much better than the other.

Your car looks much better than a silver RT10. Just don't get cocky and park it next to a bumblebee or steel gray/silver striped GTS at the next show or you'll be going home wondering where the love went.

I agree the black/white looks good. I went with black/silver and aero couple parts are on order. As far a giving up my gen IV for a gen II no way, I love 600 hp.

I've had a Gen 3 and have a Gen 4 and a Gen 2 99 ACR TT.
The Gen 2 looks nice, but the Gen 4 I like to drive the most and looks nice with its more advanced look as well IMHO.

The RT/10 I rode in was falling apart...literally. We had to pull off the hwy b/c a passer-by said the fog lights cover was falling out. The interior panels were falling off, and the fit and finish weren't that great. Granted, it gives the car character, but I use my car a lot. I can't deal with stuff falling off of the car. I can't say my Viper is the most reliable car out there, but I'll be damned if Dodge isn't standing behind my Viper. My dealer has taken great care of me, and that I appreciate.

I have ice cold A/C (interior heat hasn't been a problem on several of my 200 mile cruises), I can actually toss my guitar case in the back for church, it still gets a lot of looks, it gets 20-25mpg on long trips if I need to, and don't really have fatigue on those long trips because the car is comfortable, I hand most people their @$$ on the hwy if they get cocky, and I stick in corners that most people don't have the balls to try. Would a Gen I or Gen II satisfy ALL of the above? Probably not, but that's why I wouldn't give my SRT up for another Viper.

What makes you think that the gorilla who mauled the interior of the older Viper could not do the same to a newer one? All Vipers are great cars but I just don't like it when some owners of newer Vipers proclaim that the GTS isn't much more than a pretty face. The GTS built Viper lore, especially in road racing and is a great sports car to this day.

The heat that blows into the vents on SRT's when the A/C is not on is ridiculous for any modern car, let alone one that costs about 90k. The GTS does not have such issues. The crossover pipe that causes more interior heat problems is exclusive to '06 and earlier SRT's.

C'mon, Alex?? Although I would be proud to say I drove any Gen Viper, I believe most Viper owners would say the Gen IV's are the best Vipers yet.

I do love the GTS but the Gen 3/4s are better. They are faster, they handle better, the brakes stop shorter, the Verts don't leak, they all have side pipes (unlike the Gen 1/2s), the A/C is always cold in both my 06 and 08, they all have power side windows, and the panel fit is better. I drove a 98 RT for several years. Had both the RT and the SRT for a while. Still love the RT's styling but the SRT simply drives nicer.

I already did. Prefer the style and the power and driveability of the gen 4 vert over the GTS by a wide margin.

The GTS will always be one of my favorite cars to look at, and one day I will own one. For my driving needs the Gen III fits the bill.

Don't get me wrong, I grew up dreaming about the RT/10's. I saw my first GTS and was absolutely in love with them (reason why I put white stripes on my blue SRT coupe), but to answer the original poster, I would NEVER do it for the reasons I listed above.

My 08 has no A/C problems. In fact, my hands typically go numb after about 15 min of driving because of how cold the air is. :D

Well I did just that, owned a 02rt/10 then purchased a 03 srt/10, then purchased a 04 srt/10. After that I went back and purchased a 2002 rt/10 . However my next viper will be a gen IV, why ? plain and simple it's a much better car. JMHO from someone who went froward , then back. I love all vipers and cant wait to make a post soon showing my next new toy. :2tu:

Toy meaning viper JULIA :D

In reality, it is a stupid question. Newer Vipers are worth more money with a very few exceptions. Obviously the Gen 4 Viper is the quickest yet but the Gen 3 vs GTS is debatable.

My first love was the original Viper - the RT/10 and my first Viper was a 1993 Red "Carryover". I loved that car. Loved the low wide look of the rear end, loved the way the hood opened, and mine even had the AC added. I had upgraded the brakes to Tom's big brake kit so the RT/10 stopped pretty good. My '93 also had 3:73 gears so seat of the pants acceleration was good (maybe better) compared to the stock 3:07 even with the extra power of my SRT.

BUT, with how refined my Gen 3 is - there is no way I could ever go back. Love the real windows and real convertible top on the SRT that barely leaks a drop. I dont have the heat issues as the crossover and the second cat are gone. The SRT ride quaility is also very good for a sports car (I do have motons) and it's amazing how quickly triple digits approach and how planted the SRT feels. If I had the garage space and a little extra jack, I would own both, as they are both awesome in their own rights. I would also love to own a 96 Blue/White GTS.

I considered trading down from my '06 to a '99 Black/Silver ACR a couple years ago. Dealer had one that had never been titled with full factory warranty, but I'm happy I kept my '06. The '99 was great to look at and probably would have been a collectible in the future, but the SRT-10 is great to drive.

I Bought my R/T 10 in May 1996 (95 Model), Drooled over a year in the show case before I bought it, They are absolutley two different cars, But i would not ever trade my 95 R/T 10 for a Gen 2,3,or 4 I have the means to have Gen 1, Have had a Gen 2 GTS but Traded it for the my 06 F/E Coupe, Then as the Gen 1 is not real user friendly up here as Alberta Weather changes rapidly. I agree the car for the price of them back in 96, the top and windows really were a after thought, So we ordered in our 08 SSG graphite striped Roadster, Love the car, it is so much better than Gen 1 with the real top, windows that go up and the power and braking is so much better and the WOW factor of the SSG is amazing, but I still get in my 95 and stretch its legs now and again and I still get the same rush driving it as the newer models. So No I would not trade my Gen 3 or Gen 4 for a Gen 1 or Gen 2 but I would not trade the other way either. And why must we have to choose!!!!!!

I would enjoy any Viper, any year or model. The only concern I would have is my driving intentions. The gen I would be for open pit cruising and part time only.

The gen II and up would suffice as a more considerable choice for everyday driving. Over the years I've grown to accept all models for their own individual attributes. I don't like to imply that one car is just better than the other. They all have a special place to suit my needs.

The question is: do you like it raw, medium, or well done?

My wife just gave me the go ahead on a 2009 or wait to see what the 2010's look like. She saw some newer ones at a car show and she was sold. We won't get rid of the GTS, but the newer Viper won't have the same HP and we will just keep it stock.
