    Viper Days specs question

Dry sumps are disallowed to keep the cost of having a competitive car as low as possible. While they do protect the engine, they also add lots of horsepower. The accusump serves the same purpose, it's legal for the series, and not as expensive.

    Pilot Sport Prices and Suppliers

One of our members in the Arizona Region has a 2000 RT/10 and is in need of new tires. He has the Michelin Pilot Sports on his car. He told me the best price he could find was about $450 per tire. I haven't purchased a street tire for a Viper in several years, but I remember the price of the...

    SPRING RATES ACR

I don't think your stock shocks will work well with stiff springs. The rebound control may not be strong enough to deal with the force of a much stiffer spring. You will want adjustable spring perches. That's how you adjust the ride heights on the car.

    Battery Replacement Recomendation Wanted

Autozone stocks batteries that fit in Vipers, and they work fine. I believe mine is a Duralast. I tried the Optima and it didn't fit.

    SPRING RATES ACR

Frank, the inside diameter will depend on your shocks. On our team, we use the 2.5" I.D. with Penske and JRZ shocks. The spring length is 8". We use helper springs to keep them engaged with the shock collars during full droop. The optimal spring rates will vary with many things such as...

    Dumb Tire Question.

Jon, I would think the calculation only works if you have enough air pressure in the tire to support the weight such that the weight of the car was carried by the tire and not the wheel. Dean, I would have thought that the contact patch would be the same square area regardless of camber...

    Dumb Tire Question.

Now that I have 18" wheels up front, I run the Hoosier 305. When I had 17" wheels up front, I ran the 315. Purner tells me the footprint is virtually identical on both the 305-18 and the 315-17. I tried Hoosier 335's up front and went slower. They felt very imprecise in cornering, although...

    New Shocks & Springs

Frank, both Eibach and Hypercoil sell the springs you are looking for. You can order them over the phone and have them shipped directly to your home or a track. Look them up on the web.

    Fire Suppression Question

Halon systems are used world wide and are, I believe, the industry standard. They have saved the cars of numerous Viper Racing League drivers. A 5-pound system would be the minimum requirement, although 10 pounds should provide a greater margin of safety, and it will assure you of complying...

    Dumb Tire Question.

I believe you are correct. If the weight on a tire is, say 900 pounds, and the tire is inflated to 30 PSI, then the total area of the tire contact patch should be 900 divided by 30 = 30 square inches. However, different shaped tires will result in different shaped contact patches whether the...

WHO WANTS A BLACK 2003, LOOK HERE!

OK, I know how to settle this. The Comp Coupes are being delivered in primer so the racers can pick any color they want. How about being able to order the SRT-10 in paint-ready primer? At some reasonably reduced cost? At one of the weaker moments in my life (before Viper ownership)I was...

Why do we have such bad brakes?

Lil Schuey, thanks for saving me from another long post, you're right on the money. Tittle, you're hurtin' me! Stop it! Out.

Why do we have such bad brakes?

Interesting conversation between two brake experts. Our board needs more of this kind of interaction. I'd like to make an observation for some of the non-experts trying to decide on a system. You shouldn't be concerned about having to cut off a couple ears on each knuckle simply to make...

Why do we have such bad brakes?

I'd like to commend Stop Tech for sharing such detailed information on their brake systems. The fact that they monitor our message board and respond on a timely basis tells me they are really interested in serving the Viper community. Thanks for your response.

Why do we have such bad brakes?

GODFATHER, great to hear from you! You have valuable data that I'm keenly interested in. I'm curious as to what the operating costs have been on the Stop Tech system. I guess my main question is how often you have to replace front pads, rear pads, front rotors, rear rotors...and what is the...

Stopping distance improvement of ABS Vipers over non-ABS?

Years ago I attended a 4-day Bondurant race school. One of the exercises was to compare stopping distances and trail-braking abilities on ABS-equipped cars vs. non-ABS cars. These tests were done in the Rousch-prepared Mustangs. The superiority of the ABS cars was incredible. None of the...

Window popped out during high speed run...

Yes, what your friend experienced is a well-documented condition that was discussed on this Board in considerable detail several years ago. I experienced this frequently in 1998 and 1999 while doing the open road races in Nevada. The condition exists from a pressure differential created at...

    What does your Viper Weigh???

Here are 395 pounds of weight savings figures from preparing several of the Desert Venom GTS race Vipers (the first 3 items are imprecise and from memory only): Side exhaust with no cats 40 Fat Albert's lightweight hood 50 Tilton flywheel and clutch 40 Passenger seat...

Viper Front->Rear Weight ratio, lbs/in rear tire traction, etc

With full fuel and driver, expect the rear to be about 52% of the total weight (3,600 pounds). Under hard braking, substantial weight transfers off the rear tires and onto the front. I doubt you will ever achieve more than about 1 g in braking force, which will result in weight transfer of...

Does anyone know where to get Vinyl Stripes?

You can go to your nearest vinyl/sign store, perhaps Fast Sign, and purchase as much vinyl of any color you want. It usually comes in rolls of 30 feet or more. It is usually 13-14" wide, which is not that efficient if you want to duplicate the factory's standard 8" wide stripe. Applying them...

    First Oil Change Questions…

I've completed 5 years of hard road racing in my 96 GTS and never used anything but a stock MOPAR oil filter. The Mobil 1 oil filters have a history of failing that has been documented on this board. I don't see the purpose of using a different oil filter.

    First Oil Change Questions…

Use the MOPAR oil filter for Vipers. Use Mobil 1 10-30 for street application and 15-50 for race application. You'll need between 8 and 9 quarts of oil. Get yourself the proper sized drain tank from your local Autozone or Pep Boys. The change process is very straight forward. After draining...

    Show me your side splitters

To maximize aerodynamic downforce, you want the air flow underneath your car to be as smooth and fast as possible, thereby creating a low pressure system relative to that which flows over the top of your car. Any turbulence created by air flow migrating from the side of your car to underneath...

    Motul 600 question??

Bleeding your brakes is a simple, brainless process once you know how to do it properly. It only takes one person plus a pressure bleeder. See your Viper service manual for part numbers. Get in the habit of bleeding your brakes once per day at any track event. Some seriopus racers do it once...

    Rear-end and trani fluid?

I'd recommend using the MOPAR fluid in both the diff and the tranny. We have 5 years of heavy track experience in our Vipers with it and it works fine as well as protecting your warranty. There have been many long threads in the past about NOT USING REDLINE in your tranny. It has been proven...
