Road & Track supercar shootout: the latest BS

Sorry if someone has already posted on this subject, but I've been out for the last week with my family for Thanksgiving. Has anyone read the November R&T supercar shootout article? They chose 6 cars to compete in 4 tests: top speed, 0-100-0, slalom, and lateral acceleration. The 6 cars they...

    Lotus Esprit comments

I also am a former Lotus owner, though of the 4-cylinder variety. (See below -- '90 SE on left, '87 Turbo HCI on right.) I also visited the factory in Hethel (during the 50th anniversary celebration). When I was getting out of the 2.2L business, I was fairly convinced I would be buying a V8...

POLL: Viper owners have or getting a Z06 also ???

Obviously you already know about me.... BTW, 1900 miles and the Z06 is now running 12.8 sec quarter miles. Still can't break under 2.0 sec 60 ft time though, so I don't know what my problem is, especially since I can achieve what I consider pretty decent 0-60 times....

Rebuild old motor or replace with new crate motor???

Ron, I think I e-mailed you exactly the same comment Ulysses made above. I think having a rebuilt motor will also de-value the car. For every speed freak like you or me out there who might pay a premium for a rebuilt motor that is stronger than stock, there are probably 5-10 other prospective...

    Side sill paint "bubbling"

Side sill paint \"bubbling\" I know this question has been asked many times, but I can't remember the answer. I have the dreaded "bubbling" of the paint on my passenger-side sill. There are two quarter-sized bubbles. When I showed this to the body shop folks at Claude Short Dodge, they told...

Help, they want to keep my Viper for 12 weeks!!!!

Ron, that does suck. I was peeved when my Z06 had to go back on day 3 of ownership to get the brake booster replaced. But that only took an afternoon. Yikes! Whatever you do, I would say you have to deal with this problem. Letting the car continue to burn oil will ultimately ruin the motor...

Quick recap of latest G-Tech results: Z06 is faster than Viper 0-60

Darth, In re-reading my message, I think I over-reacted a bit. It was early in the morning, and perhaps I was crabby about being back at the office. Anyway, you seem like a cool guy, and I suppose you didn't mean anything personal. I admit I have no time slips in my Z06 that I'm proud of yet...

Quick recap of latest G-Tech results: Z06 is faster than Viper 0-60

Hey, Darth, I'm the guy who ran 13.4 at Palmdale, so chill out. Why don't you post your best G-Tech 0-60 time, and then we'll talk about who can drive and who can't.... If you go back and read the whole thread, you'll see that the 13.4 was at Palmdale, which is at 2600 ft, and so ETs are at...

Quick recap of latest G-Tech results: Z06 is faster than Viper 0-60

Allen, On street tires, my best launches have been accomplished by revving to 1800 rpm and dumping the clutch. Any higher revs, and I get too much wheel spin. However, with this launch technique, the car does bog a bit. Note my dyno numbers above -- I tend to agree with your comment, with...

Quick recap of latest G-Tech results: Z06 is faster than Viper 0-60

You're not going to like this, but here it is. Last weekend I did G-Tech runs on my Z06 and Viper, and my best on the Z06 was 4.39 sec compared to 4.29 sec on the Viper (both on street tires). I do think my Michelin Pilots are starting to lose it on the Viper (11,000 miles, original tires)...

Quick recap of latest G-Tech results: Z06 is faster than Viper 0-60

Matt, The G-Tech is an accelerometer. That means it measures g-forces, and it does so 400 times per second. According to the laws of physics, velocity is determined by integrating the measured acceleration curve (numerically), and then distance is determined by numerically integrating the...

Quick recap of latest G-Tech results: Z06 is faster than Viper 0-60

Chris, Excellent point about trying the same technique on the Viper. I'll let you know as soon as I get the Viper back on the road with street tires. Dennis, I was running 30 psi cold. As soon as I feel I'm getting a good reproduceable launch, I'll start lowering the pressure to see if it...

    Competition?

You Vette guys are not welcome here. You're all trouble-makers, especially Darth. What kind of name is "Darth", anyway? : Just kidding!!! I couldn't resist. Hey, seriously, you guys are very hospitable to me and the other Viper guys who post on the Corvette Forum. As you probably know...

    My LUCKY day!

Uhhh, why did you pull over? Did the cop put his lights on? I never would've pulled over if the cop didn't put his lights on. As for why he let you go, could be any number of things, including that he didn't get a radar or laser measurement. Could be he appreciated your (and your wife's)...

    1/8 compared to 1/4

Very nice, Ron. Make the guy feel really good. "I ran faster than you at high altitude on the engine only...." Next, tell him you discovered you also had the parking brake on!!! But seriously, here's what I know so far about my Mickey Thompson ET street set-up for the Viper. I did some...

    G-TECH

I use my G-Tech a fair amount for 0-60 runs. I've brought it to the drag strip a couple of times to compare ETs and trap speeds. ETs run 0.1-0.2 sec slower than the time slip, while trap speeds run around 2 mph faster than the time slip. This is explainable: the G-Tech starts timing once it...

Thanks for all our help, here are my first 1/4 mile results>>>>>

Thanks for the little plug there, Ron. Much appreciated. In truth, I do need to work on my launch in the Z06. 2.001 sec was my best 60 ft time, and I know guys on the Vette Forum who get 1.8-1.9 sec short times in stock trim. By December, I'll have my upgraded half shafts and will be able...

What floor jack do you all use?

I know this sounds like the dopiest question ever, but I've been to Pep Boys twice now to get a floor jack that fits under my car. On the second try I bought what they said was the lowest jack. It still doesn't fit under the side sill. So, what brand of floor jack do you all use, and where do...

    Burnout technique and issues

Thanks, John. Since I won't have line lock for this Sunday but have already committed to joining some folks at Palmdale, I have one of two options: (1) power brake, or (2) do a dry hop and skip the water. Sounds like you recommend (1) over (2).

1/4 mile dragging my snake for the first time>>>>

Hey, So Call, I recommend you drive through the water box, do a burnout, stage, rev to 4500 rpm in first gear, wait until the light has been green a little while, then dump the clutch. Oh, I'm sorry, you were asking opinions of seasoned drag racing veterans only.... Here's a serious question...

    Burnout technique and issues

Ok, I'm definitely going to the track on Sunday. I can do one of three things: (1) bring the Viper and run on the slicks, (2) bring the Viper and run on street tires, or (3) bring the Z06. As you can tell, I really want to do (1). It sounds from JonB's comments as if I should not do wet...

    Burnout technique and issues

Ok, so I have my Mickey Thompson ET streets and rims, thanks to John Purner, and I've been doing some trial dry burnouts in the parking lot behind my building (much to the chagrin of my colleagues I'm sure). Anyway, it is pretty apparent to me that in order to stay planted while doing a...

    Recommendations on half shafts?

Ok, I just got my wheels and Mickey Thompson ET streets from John Purner, and now I'm wondering what I should do about upgraded half shafts. Any recommendations on Unitrax vs. SVSi vs. any other brand? Also, how much $$ am I looking at? Thanks for any advice.
