I got a good look at the internal "pieces" of my diff on Thursday. The hyrdoloc's case split in half. I'll try to post some photos so you guys will get the idea. Devin at Unitrax took several.

Hey Skip,

Unitrax's first Q will be mine. They're going to begin putting these together working with Taylor and it'll be good for all of us with SRT-10s: 03, 04, 05 and now 06's. Did you know that Quaife provides a lifetime warranty on their diff, even under race conditions? I'm looking forward to no more diff failures. For the rest of you guys, it's not if you diff will fail, it's when.

I'll admit this thread spooks me, since having a diff break / lockup at speed is an invitation for a serious crash. Dan, keep us informed about the Quaife diff - I'd be putting in a ~3.33 gearing if I were to buy the unit.

I would think that just about any car that you add 200 to
300 hp to would need something other than a stock drive
train. Although, I also hear stories of the pin failing
with stock hp. Does anybody have an idea of how many non
blown cars have had this problem?

To be clear, my car already has the Unitrax cryo-blahblahblah gear and pin set. I'm running 3.55s at the moment, which is a bit too much gear for the power level (I run out of gear before the end of the 1/4). I've had no diff problems at all so far, but I don't like the idea of the unit locking up on me - especially at 130 MPH on the big end of the dragstrip!

since you are talking diffs I am going to transplant this question from my other thread

Choose the preferred, Ricardo or GKN. I dont mind losing the new warranty on the 08 diff if the ricardo is far superior.

I don't know of anyone who has had experiance with a GKN unit in an SRT...is this what is coming in the 08's?

I was actually talking with Dan at DC performance yesterday about this topic.

The ricardo is a beefier version of the factory hydro-loc that comes in the COmp Coupe. It will handle the power of course but you have to buy the whole rear end to get it.

The Quaife installed will set you back around $3,500.00 or more. Your rear houseing needs to be modified for the quaife to fit, new bearings and probably a set of gears, etc..

So either way you go it's going to be a few grand and either differential should work great..I'd go for the Quaife I don't know a single person who has had one fail.

And since this thread was also talking about gear changes...

It's been my experiance putting in a lower set of gears increases the posibility of breaking the differential carrier(the limited slip unit). You are increasing the amount of torque going through the it. I've rebuilt quite a few rear ends that broke during drag racing/road racing and the problem has always been more frequent when lower gears were involved.

Again talking with Dan yesterday on the topic of gears, he would always advise upgrading to a quaife if a lower set of gears are on your mind. As it is stock the 03-06 SRT's are prone to differential problems...adding a lower set of gears will only increase the chances of failure.

I amazed that my stock diff has held together..I've blown two transmissions and not had a problem with the rear...though I never have liked the feel of it.

Why do people keep saying 3k+ for a quaife? this may be what tuners are charging but if you go to the authorized quaife dealer in the US, they charge you under 2k installed.

my .02 that is bound to make tuners mad...

This is a very old thread that I started after having many diff issues. Some of these issues were with a mostly stock car, some with a paxton car.

Since I put the Quaife in my 04 (925 rwhp, 805 rwtq) I've had no issues with it whatsoever. This is one strong piece that I would recommend to anyone who drives their car ******* the street, at the drags or on a road course.

The other piece of info, as Dan Cragin stated above, if you're going to a lower gear ratio, get the Quaife. If you don't, it's just a question of when your stock diff will fail, not if.

Hopefully, the 2008 car won't have diff issues.:dunno:

Buy a Quaife. I have one. The difference between the Quaife and the stock dif is night and day. The car after the Quaife is a lot more stable, and you can put the power down a lot sooner in the corners.

I too have 3.55 gear and quaiffe in my car and it was money well spent. It REALLY woke the car up and the difference in seat of the pants is day and night. IMO, all stock viper should've come with 3.55
