Can I squeak by on regular or mid grade unleaded?

I am going to pick up my Viper tomorrow morning in Montana. I am in Colorado...so I have a lovely drive in front of me. I am concerned about reports that stations are starting to run out of certain grades of gas. If I can't find premium when I need it...is ONE tank of mid or regular unleaded going to damage my new (well 2001) baby? I have read previous posts regarding engine knocking on lower octane gas...but I am unsure if that was after one tank or repeated use. Advice?

I think premium will be the last grade available. Most will use up regular before going to the more expensive premium.

If you don't have a supercharger you can survive on 87. Though you need good ears to hear the "knock".

Espetially in Colorado you better use high octane fuel when you climb the mountains.

On a long trip, on a straight road, in cold weather there is should be no issue to run on 87.

In the mountains is the best place to use lower octane! The low air pressure at altitude means less fuel and air, so less combustion pressure, and therefore less tendency to knock. High altitude areas typically have lower octanes across the board (85, 87, 90)

the first day i had my car, i put 87 in my tank not knowing the car required premium.

it ran fine and sounded good, but did start knocking when i tried to get on it.

on a non forced induction gen1 (also w/o nitrous) should be no problem as it is a 9:1 motor

Actually a Gen2 is 9:6:1, but who's counting :)

Cal

who said anything about a gen 2 I was just telling everyone a gen 1 would be ok, I would not use under 91 on anything over 9.2:1 comp

If you have to, but buy some octane boost available at any gas station.

You are willing to dump lower grade gas in your car to save $4 on a fill up with a engine in the 5 digit range??? Baffles the mind.

no reason to get all nasty when you didn't read the question.... he said if premium was NOT available..... not if he could save money.....

also note that unless you are running forced induction or a high compression motor you are just throwing $ away by using premium.

I never considered any of today's motors high compression but I guess anything over 9:1 is high compression these days.
