I lost 5th on the backstretch at Sebring in my 97. No complaints though, it saw a dozen track events each year for five years and before I got it it was a school car. I used Mopar fluid the whole time. Dunno what was used before.

Well,
my Viper aint supercharged. So dont have to worry about using mopar oil :D

By the way. Isnt your car supercharged? If so, it could be just the tremendous torque that your motor is puttin out now.

Tooofst & Vipeuup,
Doesn't look that you got any experience in mechanics .... What you do for living, you sell flowers ? Check the pictures !

This is an oiling trouble at 6th gear. 0% relation to what is under the hood. This car wasn't abused. Just VOI 8 and a few saturday night drags.

However I did a lot of long distance rides in 6th gear. Something like 2000mi in 30hours without stop. Several times. My transmission overheated ... and that stupid Mopar oil is just poor quality ....

Is there a drain/fill plug somewhere in your pics? I'd like to flush the tranny fluid but have never done it on the snake (I just got it). Any advice/help would be appreciated.
Thanks

OK great, what sort of bolt/fitting is it? Hex? Also, how many quarts of tranny fluid do I need? Is Amsoil the tranny oil of choice for you guys? If not, what do you all run?
Sorry for so many questions, i'm tryin to learn this car like I know my Supra.

Check This thread it will tell you the whole story ...

You need 4qt of this oil.
On the page you can also see that it satisfies Chrysler specification MS-9070.

First of all ask you dealer what he thinks of this oil before you use it !!

Thanks for the link. Sounds like a lot of guys are having luck with the Motul 300, why didn't you try that?

Yea, it's 75W90, just trying to figure out which brand is best... Sounds like there's a vote for the Amsoil and the Motul...

I've had Amsoil in the tranny since 2002 at 16,600 miles. I have 50,500 miles on the car now. There is half a dozen track events on it, many autocrosses, and maybe a dozen runs at the strip. I will probably change it this fall and have it analyzed. I put Amsoil in the differential at the same time and then put a 3:45 rear end in at 32,800 miles....and again filled with Amsoil.

As soon as I changed the tranny and differential fluids, I noticed my temp gauge running at least half a bar cooler from the factory fluids. Kind of unscientific, but I watch that gauge pretty close. The MGW short shifter knob is cooler as well in high temps. and low speed running. Last week, on a trip(loaded with luggage and 2 people), in 85 degree heat, at sometimes 80+ MPH, and in 6th gear, my temp gauge was running about half way between the first slash below the 3 bold bars and the left bold bar. I also got 22.7 MPG at that speed with the 3:45 rear end. I thought that pretty good. Maybe those are normal observations for some cars, but mine never ran that cool prior to changing the fluids over.

Less friction = less heat to dissipate

Still waiting on my manuals so a couple of questions.

First is there any reason not to run Amsoil? I will not be tracking the car expect for the very occasional drag strip run.

The tranny takes the full 4 qts to fill? Don't want to buy 4 and find out I need 4.25. As I have read, there is a drain plug in the rear of the tranny with the fill on the driver side. Does the fill plug also serve as the full indicator? Also, how do you fill this with the car on the ground? Or can I pump the fluid in with the car jacked up on the right side? Any torque specs on the plugs, or just make sure its tight? Do you apply teflon tape to the threads?

The rear diff takes 4 oz of the slip lock and how much gear oil? My car has a drain plug on the diff so I would consider a complete drain for the volume. I assume the fill plug is also the full indicator as well here?

The engine takes a full 8 qts with a filter change?

Removed the cowling today looking for something else. I noticed on the driver side, just under the windshield there was a electrical wire with exposed ends. The ends looked like a miniature spade connector end to end. You cannot see this with the cowl on. What is this?

Also realized that changing plug wires could make for an interesting day. I hope the reach from underneath is reasonable.

I was able to get within 2 ounces of the factory fill amount. We suctioned the old stuff out with air. I had a drain plug installed on the new rear end.

Plug wires can be changed from the top with the cowl off without much trouble.

OK need some help here understanding. I've read the other thread and both my service manuals (94 and 99) It seems that somewhere between the evolution of the gen 1 and gen 2 they changed from Dextron IIe for the 94 T-76 tranny to MilSpec-9070 for the 99 T-76 tranny.

Anyone know of any reason I shouldn't use the "Amsoil Synthetic Manual Transmission and Transaxle Gear Lube 75W-90 API GL-4" in both tranny's?

Little help please?

PS: the 94 is the one I am currently tracking.

Like I said, prior to my purchasing the 97 it was a school car and I ran Mopar for five years (10-12 events per year) before failure. I'm no chemist/engineer but I can't complain about losing a tranny after all that track time.
