On some up or down shifts I will hear a clunk sound coming from the rearend area during the shift.

The shifts are low/mid rpm range shifts, not high rpm.

Normal?

What is it? I'm new to Vipers.

Thanks, Grunt

Could it just be some drive train lash.A lot of my vehicles have it. I can't say that I recall it in mine. But mine has been so loud for awhile I probably can't hear it.

Quite probable - the short drive shaft and tall 3.07 gear exasperate the annoying clunking (lash) at low spead low rpm downshifts and with parking lot speed driving. Careful modulation of the go pedal at low speeds does lessen the occurance. Changing the diff gear to something more aggressive also has a possitive effect on this while providing other great benefits for the street.

The viper really doesn't do well under 2000. It's probably the fact that you are shifting too soon. Keep it in it's torque band and just practice your shifting. Even with my new 355 gears it doesn't smooth out in 6th till about 90. I still cruise in 5th. Drive it more agressively, get in tune with that wonderful v10. The drive train is clunky on the viper but can be minimized by keeping the rpm's up. The drive train isn't mounted in sponges like the vette. When you shut it off it doesn't have the death rattle like the vette. You feel more and that's okay. The exhaust probably isn't loud enough to drown out the noises, make it louder.

I've been hearing it too. It sounds like a ball thumping in the trunk. I think its the plates in the differential unloading. I haven't dropped anything yet so it can't be that serious.LOL

Everything you say is right on. :2tu: Get into the engine and drive the hell out of the car like it was made for. I am also a big believer in changing the tranny and rear diff oil at around 5000 miles to get rid of any metal in there from breakin.
