Yes, hopefully no injuries. From this limited view it looks like an awfully straight piece of road to be "losing control" on. Makes you wonder what kind of moves this guy was making...

OTOH, maybe some squid in a hot-rodded Prius just went for it and cut him off. Yeah, that's it.

Viewing these kinds of incidents on a frequent basis is a good reminder to work on my self-restraint, if nothing else. Seen a lot of wild behavior over the years with my sport bike friends... it does catch up to ya eventually. Ahh, the risks we take to keep life exciting...

Looks like a Gen 3 and could easily have had the original tires. That's my guess. Hopefully everyone is fine. I was thinking about driving mine next week as it is supposed to be clear, but it will only be around 40 degrees... Maybe I shouldn't.

I've had my 03 (with PS2s) out today (temp 30, warming to 48) and last weekend as well.

Keep your speeds down, and no funny stuff, and you'll be fine.

Its that time of year when we start to see a few Incidents like this cropping up again :( In all honestly, something may have caused the car to loose traction, so lets not be too judgemental until all the facts are known. Right foot normally plays a pretty big part in these matters, but something could have snapped on the car? or a sudden move by a third party? Hope everyone made it out OK and can look forward to Christmas ;)

Hey Eric... I have different names on different boards too...lol.....well, progressive paid me for the damage on my RX8... now i either fix it, or sell it to someone to make into a cheap track car (slow compared to ACR track car), or whatever... :)

I didn't think it was you as you didn't mention your poor smashed rx-8.

Wow, I just drove through there yesterday and saw those skids - I was
wondering what happened.

There was a PA weekender who came down with his SRT for a long while,
was never able to catch up. Last weekend I thought I saw him in a 97 B/W,
now I gotta wonder if it was him.

Such a waste, but (assuming no other factors) I think we see these happen
this time of year because now the roads are getting colder. Since asphault
retains heat so well it can take weeks for the road surface to begin cooling
off so owners do out on the first cold day and nothing unusual happens so
the next time out...

My condolences to the owner...

Probably got snakebit - old runcraps with stock differential and cold out - tromped the gas and away she went........been there but under far luckier circumstances.

sounds like owner was an idiot from that link.

stupid + cold = bad. add in old tires and its a sure thing

quotes from that thread....
one wrecked right in front of me on Saturday so i could mostly attempt to destroy my RX8 into it. He was gettin on it then swerved around a car in the middle lane...a little too throttle and the barrier was his enemy (or his friend vs going headfirst into oncoming traffic).... he slid sideways across all 3 lanes into the guardrail (backwards) then back into my path... so I bounced off of him into a mini van. Damage on my bumper, front spoiler, both front fenders, both front wheels all 4 doors, etc.

No, luckily it was all low speed by the time we watched him go from 100mph to stop in the oddest way possible....

there conincedently (minus 10 for spelling) was a yellow viper in front of him.... so they take the exit ramp with me right behind and this guy in the silver viper is 2/3 on the berm kicking up gravel all over my car... he was in over his head before we even got onto the actual highway... yellow viper weaves into fast lane at full throttle.. silver is trying to keep up and my car is soooooo slow that i am at least 200 yards behind instantly... so in the end the silver viper guy showed me how his grace under pressure was lacking as soon as he took the berm early in the game..so no surprise what happened eventually

street racing in cold weather.....genius

I think I might have read about this wreck on another forum. If so, the driver claims his brakes failed just as he came over the rise and saw the traffic. He commented that a post-crash examination revealed an empty brake fluid reservoir. Just glad no one was hurt, but that's a sickening sight.

i know the owner, it was new tires. but they were runflats and it was cold out. There was no one racing, just accelerating to get on the highway.

Why anyone would buy "new" run flats is beyond me. Those things **** in the cold or rain. The Viper's vehicle dynamics engineer once told me that they would not let the engineers drive a Viper with those tires if it was below 50 degrees, he said they kept wrecking. Having driven in rain and cold I believe him.

What are the odds of someone just buying a Viper, then getting hit by a Viper in his DD? Glad everyone is ok, sorry the Viper and RX-8 got crunched, those are cool cars!

Different accident. That was a GTS a couple weeks ago

You are making the assumption that every viper owner 1) knows there
are options, 2) understands those options, 3) cares enough about
the dynamics of the vehicle to research it. Obviously he was not very
framilar with the car or he wouldn't have punched it so early in the trip
on a cold day - therefore I am led to believe his tires were the last thing
on his mind until about 4 seconds before he hit the barrier.

I stopped by there once when they were there, really a pretty decent bunch of guys, usually a little bit of everything there, Ferrari's, Lotus', Corvettes, Vipers amongst others, not sure how many were there on the day this happened.

No one was racing and they were new tires. Lets get the facts straight before we start accusing people as I often see on these boards people jumping to conclusions.

Before you open your mouth you should know the facts!! Were you there at the scene (NO!!!)? I often see you run your mouth on situations you know nothing about.

I was there at the scene and no one was racing and he had brand new less than 100 mile tires on his car.Yes they were runflats and I agree why did he get run flats but the driver did not know the dangers of run flats. After all they are OEM tires on the car.

:bdh:

run craps - new or old - are dangerous. Very.
Calling for trouble?!!!

And, still, a lot of Viper owners use them. :drive::drive: stay safe!

I agree with you 100%. Unless you are a regular visitor to this forum or a serious car enthusiast, you would not know and understand the disadvantages of the OE Michelin Pilot Sports.
