That's tragic!

Is there no way you can leave it in storage here stateside with a friend to check on it from time to time (start it, check the battery, etc)?

Do you know how long it'd be before you were able to come back home?

I've not heard of anyone losing an engine with responsible street use. There are a lot of European VCA members. Consider keeping the car and driving within "normal" bounds. The V1- engine is a very realiable motor from my experience.

ditto on Maui Viper's Military respects.

Sorry for the news Shags.

I and MANY others are VERY thankful and proud of you. At night I sleep soundly in a FREE and democratic country thanks to you and others like you.

There is NOTHING I can say to make you understand the appreciation I have for you so let me just say thank you.

Please let your fellow servicemen know my thoughts.

Its just a Dodge. Unless you push a rod through the block its not that big of a deal...even then...have the hole welded up, new sleeve, rod, piston and go race. Lots more chance of totaling the car than hurting the engine bad. If you just don't want to take it over thats fine but worrying about the engine is a stretch. There would be 100 gearheads on your base that could do a repair.

shags,

With what you are doing to protect our Country and Freedom,I don't believe that DC will have the nerves to deny you a claim.
Are you sure that the fine print in the Extended Waranty specifically exclude coverage if you are driving the car in a foreign country?

I think that the VCA President should contact DC to make sure that they understand that it is a special situation and that DC will have ALL the VCA members and Viper owners
made as hell if they don't cover you car when you are in Europe, protecting THEIR (and ou freedom.

Shags,
I owned my 97 for a full year before we moved back to the states from Italy. I had a very good friend storre it for me and make sure it stayed safe! Other than finances there is NOTHING that could part me and the red beast. (humor) Even though you are Air Force I'm sure there is something we can do!! :)

Just kidding!!! Do think about storing it though. There are plenty of people here with some good ideas. Hopefully selling will be a last resort.

There is always a possibility we will get stationed overseas again (my wife is LCDR USN), and I would find a way to keep it!

Sure, I would have loved to have had the car in the UK and Italy....I seriously doubt just having the car there would be a problem. If you are like us.....the MOVES are where all the damage/heartache comes in.

I always needed a reason to install a lift! Bring it on down and I'll treat her like my very own!

Good luck to you no matter what!! :)

I just got confronted with a similar dilemma (been an ex-pat in the US for Nike the last 4 years an recently they decided to call me back in order to start up their Russian operations).
Next to my snake I was also going to lose my fiancee.
Net, it wasn't worth it and I RESIGNED.
Today was actually my first day of unemployment.
So glad I made the right decision. It's only a job you know. There's other priorities in life...
Spring is coming. Which vehicle should I drive today ? Viper or R1 ? :)

Are you headed to Aviano? I would think they have a US repair shop on base, if not there, then Vicenza should! So I would think the parts aren't going to be too hard to get if you do run into a problem.

You are in a great position to bring your Viper over to Europe and enjoy those open highways! The Air Force will pay for transportation(guessing), you get U.S. gas prices, and you don't have to pay storage while you are gone!! And if you are sure you are going to be gone for a couple years, you can get your warranty money back!

Come on, bring it over to Italy with you! :D

Thanks for your dedication Shags! Please feel free
to contact me if there is anything I can do for you.

Perhaps Marcus in Germany would have some suggestions.

Good luck and God's speed,

Dave

Shags,

Unless things have changed in the few years since I retired, the AF should pay to ship your Snake to Italy if you're PCSing. I'd take the risk...God to have a Viper in Europe!! Italy, especially Northern Italy is sports car terrority...country roads...beautiful villages. I'm sure you could sell the car in europe if that ever became necessary and as mentioned Avianio does have a base garage and auto hobby shop if memory serves. I've owned cars overseas even in Asia. There were always guys who were willing to help me fix problems and I'm sure there'd be plenty of help for a Viper. I wouldn't think twice. Fly safe.

A fighter pilot! As in you fly an F-something? I would think a viper would seem a little down on power to you. Not many people I can say that about. Just wanted to chime in and thank you for your service. I hope you find a solution to your dilema.

I think it's super cool Shags is a fighter pilot. I think that has to be one of the coolest jobs anywhere. Regular day-to-day stuff must be really boring. :)

Do you guys ever do civilian ride-alongs? LOL.

Stay safe.

Take the Viper! My guess is that we could "help" with parts, at least, if there were ever to be a service issue that required warranty work..... If you and your friends are technically savvy (and I am guessing that aircraft mechanics are probably pretty cabable to work on cars.....ha ha ha) my guess is that parts could be gotten to you - (under warranty, but shhh... don't tell anyone) and you would have to find someone to do the labor.

Thank you for serving and protecting our country!

I agree with Jani, I dont think you would have a hard time getting parts under warranty for your snake ;) Take the car with you, dont worry about the engine it is real strong. Omg what I would give to own a Viper in Europe :D You'd be a bigger star overthere since it is rarer, Take it :)

I've got a place (inside) to store it for as long as you'd like but I agree with two above suggestions - Take it with you or just by another when you return home.

Good luck overseas...

Hmmmmm, me thinks I'd like to know where "Shags" came from!! My brother-in-law flies F-15's and his call sign is "Draggin"....had something to do with a SHORT approach when landing in Mildenhall (or something like that)!!

As you can see....IF you wanna keep it, and store it back in the states, you have that option! :)

I'm in the same position....a Davis-Monthan AFB, proud Air Force guy who's going to Okinawa in Dec (3 year tour). Don't know what to do with my black '94 RT-10 (19K miles). People tell me to bring it since the Japanese guys will go crazy with envy and offer me $1000s more than high blue-book for this highly coveted super-mobile. But then again, it's an island. I believe it's 3 x 17 miles...NOT Europe. An island with a really big ocean around it. That can't be good for a Viper. I don't know what to do.

Hey Shag...let me know what you decide. Since I'm leaning both ways...I may just follow your lead.

Also -- THANKS for serving our GREAT country. :usa:
