Exhaust???

I just purchased a 2006 SRT/10 with 17K miles on it. The only mod I wish to immediately pursue is the exhaust. I have listened to literally hours of different exhausts and read what many people have said. My conclusion is that ones exhaust preference is a subjective/personal decision since everyone's opinion of what sounds good/right is truly what their ear hears. That being said, I prefer a louder note and have decided to go with a cat back Belanger exhaust with the rear cats deleted. So my questions are: 1. Is there one place better than another to buy this specific system, and 2. It is my understanding I will need oxygen sensor simulators to fool the computer - which brand/type should I buy and from where?

Of course, I am open to any and all suggestions regarding my exhaust choice and any other opinions on the entire exhaust topic. Thanks you in advance!

Remove all 4 cats for best results.
Sound, performance, and cabin heat reduction.

One of the SCT vendors here can hook you up with a tune that will accommodate the cat delete for the O2 problem.
Also deletes the stupid skip shift and turn on the cooling fan sooner. :)

It is a roll of the dice on what system to buy.
Almost anything is better than the stock exhaust on a gen III though.

Hope you don't end up with a bunch of ugly cabin drone. :crazy2:
My exhaust sounds totally KILLER at idle, wide open, decel, and everywhere in between. But I have to wear earplugs now on my commute to the track to avoid a headache. I love it. :headbang:
Doesn't bother me with a helmet on. Can't have any conversation when I have a passenger on the track.
Everyone comments on how awesome the car sounds. I love it. :headbang:

Good luck with your gamble, hope you come out a winner. ;)

I have a Gen 3 and have been looking into this mod as well. For me, looking for louder exhaust note. I almost went the same route you are going, but after much thought, I decided to keep the cats, remove the muffler and go with a straight pipe. By keeping the cats, I won't have the strong exhaust smell in the garage or at idle. I removed the cats on my last car and the smell was very strong.

Thank you both for your reply. I guess my only concern with removing all 4 cats would be passing the yearly New York State emisions. As you stated Allan, it is a gamble whether I am going to pass with removing the 2 cats. Thoughts? St. Char, I did think about the straight pipes too....decisions, decisions.

By the way, do you have any audio of your Viper with the straight pipe mod? If so, please send it my way. Thanks.

Something to think about..you can purchase the balanger turnouts/tips for around $430.00. I think the full cat back balanger exhaust is around $1300.00. From what I hear the sound really is not that much different between straight pipes and full cat back, however just straight pipe is supposed to be a little louder.

Regarding a video clip, haven't done the install yet.

Bummer.
If you have to go through emissions testing to license the car, you will have to leave the cats on.

or..................

If you have friends/relatives that live in a state or county that doesn't require that, register the car at their address. ;)

Does anyone have a pic or drawing of the complete stock exhaust system? I have a modded exhaust and I am wondering how the stocker was mounted and where the four cats are located. I know of the two up front after the headers and before the sidepipe, but where should the other two be?

There are 2 cats on each side.
Right after the exhaust manifold, before the bend to run down the side sill.
Primary and secondary, one right after the other.

Some guys remove only one on each side. ............I don't get that. Why bother with it at all just to deal with half the problem?
That's like only removing some of the cancer, and leaving some left in there on purpose.

If your car still has one cat on each side, ..........what's up with that?
..........From under the car, look closer. You can see both through the holes in the bottom of the car where the cats are.

Allan, being a physician, I can respect your analogy; however, from all of the posts I have read (and I have read many), the removal of the rear cats was for a reduction in cabin heat - nothing more, nothing less.

98intrigue, The corsa exhaust just didn't seem loud enough to me. From all that I have read, they seem to be the best pick for eliminting drone though. Keep me posted, I am certainly interested in the headers.

Do cars with no other mods, but rear cats removed still pass emissions testing?

The rear cats weren't designed as cabin heaters, they are to help complete the combustion process and help clean up the 'bad stuff' in the exhaust gases.

I like my Viper with no cats. :headbang:

still don't understand the point of leaving 2 cats on a gen III Viper.
:dunno:

I went with a 3" single hi-flo system on my 06, I also had Roe Racing make a tune with the down stream O2 Excemption, The system is a little loud if you want to listen to the radio....LOL but thats ok, Only issue is my system was from VIPAIR, which alot of people have had problems with , MY system did take awhile to get to me but I was in no real hurry and the price difference compared to Corsa was worth the wait, eventually all pieces needed showed up and this was my result
