I would expect to see the 08s all over the place.

Pace cars is one, but I also expect to see some factory help to get lots of these into competition.

This new, better breathing engine should be able to dominate many venues.

I think thats what they spent on it. As far as what it is worth, its only worth what someone is willing to pay for it, as they say. Have you seen some hot rods at Barret Jackson go for pennies on the dollar? I saw one where the owner had invested over $200,000, and it auctioned off for like $55,000. Sad....

As far as the 2008 Coupe in competition, I think to make the playing field fair, SCCA and Speed officials have determined they need to tie an anchor to it. :) Otherwise Lou will be whining about how Tommy and Bob just keep pulling away. :buttkick:

Heck, I would love to see them take the Manufacturer's Championship in the World Challenge Series -----------------they barely missed it this year with the great running of all the privateers. Just think what this motor, with a bit of factory support, could do?

Remember that Scotty B. White had to pole at the runoffs even after an extremely late and inappropriate call from SCCA added 140 lbs to the car , besides a restrictor. Yet, superb driving by Cindi Lux almost took the win ( she ended up second ). Imagine what the 08 can do with more power, better rear diff., etc. Looks like an exciting year for racing with the Snake!!

Unfortunately we will have to wait until the actual year 2008 to see how the 08 Viper does...since the season starts in 30 days or so and it seems production cars will not be ready until mid-season at the earliest.

(unless you know something we dont'... )

i am guessing that we dont see the new viper till the end of summer or fall.

FYI - if that were to happen, AND the viper paces the INDY 500 this year, AND we were to see the 2008 viper pace car at the race, we wont be allowed to talk about the sighting since it could be considered by some to be a "future DCX product". :nono:

Gen 3 SRT's are 3 years older than the current c6 z06. The new Viper is only a year out from the z06... this is a much more fair comparison. Guess who'll win? :D

you have to start wondering if GM and the Hullmans have some sort of "deal" going on, OR, GM is simply buying the spot and DC isnt willing to spend the coin. (betting on the latter since this is what happened to the NASCAR race in Joliet IL). are the pace car duties bought by a manufacturer, similar to buying advertising at the superbowl? does anyone know?

afterall, like Leslie said, the pace car this year is NOTHING SPECIAL. it is a convertible, and it isnt even a Z06. for the last (10) YEARS, the pace car has been a GM product. AND, this will make (4) years in a row now that the pace car was a vette.

WTH? i thought they lost it when they chose an SUV to pace the race in 2001. and now this. :bonker:

I believe Pace Car duties at Nationally televised venues, are, in fact, purchased positions.

Won't the new engine just get them more weights and restrictors added on because the competition is really no competition?

You are correct, they are part of a larger overall marketing campaign/budget. It usually includes signage in and around the event, local marketing and a LARGE tv sponsorship usually involving purchasing the majority (if not all) of the tv breaks. This will give said car maker exclusivity in the event and on tv. I do not see Daimler/Chrysler expending that much coin to buy out GM. Oh, one more thing the incumbent advertiser has the right of first refusal so GM would have to decide to NOT do it before Daimler could even think about it.

well, that makes sense then. thank you very much for your insight. i am sure alot of people didnt know that it worked this way. i was under the impression that the indy group voted for a new and "cutting edge" car to showcase the day of the race. you know, kinda like voting someone into the hall of fame?

but, i guess this is not the case. i am dissapointed for the viper, but on the other hand, if the indy group is asking a ridiculous amount of money to buy the pace car spot, i have to say that i cant blame them for saying no.

Its not really the Indy Groups fault. They have sold all of the rights to the television network that is covering them. They either get a flat rate (more likely) or a percentage of the cut (less likely). These network deals are usually multi-year deals. Now the Indy Group has some say in the sponsors. For instance I'm sure if the SPICE Network put together a pace car and by some miracle the broadcasting network was all for it, the Indy Group could nix the deal due to it not being on brand or what they believe in.
