I am having a hella of time taking off my crank damper...need advice...pic

I am trying to take off my crank damper and can not
get the dang thing off. All bolts are off and I have a universal puller
like the manual says to use. I have the puller pretty much torque out...
but the damper is not wanting to come off.

I had the paxton dowel pins installed on my crank when I had the kit in place.
Do you think that is causing the damper not to come off? Do I need to
drill out the old pins? Any advice? I figure with the amount
of pulling pressure I have on this damper, it would come off.

Sometimes there will be a threaded hole in a pulley, and on the other side of the hole there are no threads, just a flat surface. You screw a bolt into this "blind" hole, and it exerts pressure on the surface behind it, which makes the pulley come off. I've never examined a Viper damper up close, and was wondering if it might have this removal feature? Do all six of those bolt holes have the same length bolts, or are any of the bolt holes "blind", where there are no threads beyond the other side of the damper?

The damper looks pretty dry, have you tried spraying some penetrating oil?

Keep those puller threads lubed, that way just a little more of the applied torque will be applied to the damper, and not be taken up by the puller itself. I don't have anything else to offer- wish you luck!

From what the manual shows, you just pull the damper off with
the puller. I have looked at photo's of the crank snout and
there are no threads on it besides what is on the inside of
the crank for the crank hub bolt. The hub should just slide
or pull off.

jus a guess here but the pins may not be perfectly straight and you're pulling on the pins causing more pressure....you mite get lucky jus drilling out the pins and trying to pull it off then...it's jus tapered so it ought to jus come right off...and get some penatrating lube or even brake fluid works good too.....jus don't get it near the paint!!...Len

Well, never pulled a Viper pulley off before, however, I have pulled several off V8s. The trick I was taught is to slightly to moderatly tap the pulley with a hammer around where the bolt normally is. Everytime I have done this I have got them to come off within 10 minutes. Also works good on steering wheels :)

I pulled mine off last year just as you described you are doing. (I may have used some penetrating oil.) No issues. When I replaced it, I put on the Sean Roe crank pin kit. Maybe the dowel pins are frozen as you suggested.

I would use a better puller. Looks like your threads are shot right where you they are going into the puller at least from the picture. Pulling it off should be a no brainer.

I don't think your damper is pined. You should get a better puller then that one. Bolt the puller right to the damper, tighten into the crank hole not the crank bolt head.

I think the pins are holding the damper on. I used the drill guide that paxton gave me...but that's not saying much.

Also if your going with the ATI supper damper, it is a lot of work to get pined so take your time and don't get to pissy.

I am pinning my ATI damper with the Sean Roe set up. Any advice on it? I was going to drill the hub on a drill press first. Install it and then drill the crank snub.

I thought after getting the hub and crank drilled the battle would be over. The roll pins proved to be more challenging to drive in then I thought. I ended up using a 5/8"x6" concrete anchor bolt as a punch to drive them in so not to mushroom the ends.

Well, I got a call from Doug Levin today and he gave me some good advice...I am going to take his advice on this one since these cranks are not cheap. Last thng I want to do is ruin one of these.

I am going with this ATI puller....a little bit more money but better safe than sorry.

Put some grease on the threads of the center bolt that drives against the crank. You will get a lot more force out of it. Also, are you using a 1/2 impact wrench? I have not removed the pulley on a Viper but did my V-8 last week and it came right off. The last time I took it off it was a
B$%^. The grease made the difference.
