I do not feel safe anymore, why?

Hey guys,

Bought my viper about a year ago, I have been meaning to post this thread or get it checked out but I have simply been too busy.

Here's the deal, when I am driving on the road, my car seems very loose and almost scary to drive if I am going over 90 mph+, when I switch lanes its just very "loose" feelings. Its hard to explain, just not tight like it should be. There is just a small amount of play, but not really, maybe like a half inch or something, maybe less. I wouldnt expect that to be the issue.

What JD said... have you also checked the date on the tires too? If they're really old, it might add to the problem.

if ur tires are half tread or below,they will grab the road and run you all over it,allways keep next to new tires on that car of yours,its the best investment u can purchase,u will be amazed on how much better it will drive.its easy to get used to junk tires until u get new ones,u dont know how bad they really drive your car!

year, tires (brand), air pressure, age!, etc....

new tires,everybody allways thinks they need a alighnment,even shops will brainwash you,unless your car has been thrashed and abused,steering wheel off center to the moon,a alighnment wont help,again,if your tires are not super fresh and like new,they will make your car feel like a piece of shxxt!

What state are you in? I can recommend a shop that will do perfect alignments and will not up sell you uneeded repairs/parts. My 95 and the 06 Viper are squirrely (is that a word) in Fla due to the high center crown of the roads.

Was the car ever involved in a wreck. Its a stretch, but it could be that the frame is bent. I hope that is not the case.

You may also want to check that the sawy bars are securely attached. I know it sounds funny but I had a sway bar bolt back itself all the way out, (almost lost the darn thing)that will definitely effect the car's handling

The year HELPS in these discussions...and after reviewing all of your past posts...it appears that you are referencing a 2004 SRT-10 with 25,000+ miles on it.

If that is the case, follow the above suggestions by FIRST checking your tire pressures, check the tires themselves (and likely replace the OEM runflats), put it on a lift and look for "problems"...including all of the suspension parts as well as the frame. Then complete the above suggested alignment, making sure that the shop prints out the readings before and after the job is finished.
As an aside, I find our 03 SRT-10 is the most "squirrely" of all of our Vipers...most of which I blame on the run-flats, especially in cool weather.

must have missed the year but my 04 had this problem. The bolt in the steering u-joint needed to be tightend. IT was torqued properly but the u-joint had to be crushed a bit to get it tight on the steering shaft. I tightened it up then loosend it up then re-torqued it.

I completely disagree. I had a mishap with the aligment on my car. Got caught in the rain on the highway and almost wrecked a dozen times. Both rears were towed in almost a half inch. It did exactly what you are describing.

My 08 was like that when brand new, with Motons. It felt unstable and dangerous even at resoanble speeds. And if you spun the wheels at all the rear would kick out. I had a race driver drive it and he said it was dangerous. His shop did an allignment and adjusted the shocks and its like a different car. Stable on the street. I had it to a road course and it was not loose or scary, felt stable at the limits. The work was done by TPC in Jessup, Maryland, if you are in this area.

I live in Washington State and the roads are crappy here. When I put the Penski setup in my car it helped alot, But at higher speeds if its on the softer settings...Hang on if there is a rut from the trucks in the road.
Our SRT4 with 480whp is even more crazy.

this is on my 04.white knuckle ride for sure.
the car drives real smooth now.
i did have new run flates on before the alignment.
at least they can check all bolts as well at the same time.
