K&N\'s installed...Not what I expected

Installed the K&N intake system on a bone stock '05 yesterday and what a disappointment. Followed the instructions verbatim, was very simple, took no time at all, air temp sensor was easy to remove everything bolted back together as expected.(yes disconnected the battery) I don't even need to go to the track to confirm she LOST POWER. I CAN'T BELIEVE IT. I'm still in shock. I thought maybe the outside temps were a little high. Put it away for the night. Well drove her again today and the same. The seat of the pants difference is amazing....but in the wrong direction. There are two theories I have:

1. There is an opening 360 degrees around the plastic intake bridge and the air filter housing. I know the stock system was completely sealed and would build up pressure in the filter housing. Could this make such a difference.(I remember someone made this point in A tale of two filters thread)
2. I removed the plastic piece in the hood scoop that directs water away from the filters. The K&N system does not have the screw and wing nut that bolts there plastic intake bridge to the metal piece on the underside. As a result the plastic housing that holds the filters is not exactly in the same position
as the stock system. With the hood closed and looking thru the scoop, the top piece of the plastic housing that holds the filters does not line up with the top of the hood scoop opening. It hangs a little lower and there is a space where intake air is going. Above the housing not into it and thru the filters.Granted the space is small but there non the less.

Anybody have any thoughts. I am contemplating reinstalling the stock system and adding just the green filters.

Too much oil on the filters, resticting air flow?

Don't do it. You'd just be wasting time and money. Give the computer a chance to adjust itself after the reset. Make sure and drive it spiritedly for a good while...There should be absolutely, NO reduction in horsepower lol...

Re: K&N\'s installed...Not what I expected

Check these:

1. Are the openings for the Idle Air Motor tube and the Crank Case Breather tube drilled to spec?

2. Is there any deformities in the K&N "Y" Pipe?

3. Is there an excessive amount of oil in the filters?

4. Did you damage the Air Temp Sensor, or is it covered in oil? (see number 3)

5. Seal around the "Y" pipe with Foam Sealing Tape, available at any hardware store.

Thanks for the tips guys.
1.The openings are a perfect match, I had to open the diameter of the idle air slightly.
2. don't seem to be any deformities in the tube.
3. doesn't seem to be excessive oil
4. possible the air temp sensor is dirty/oily but it's not damaged, I was very careful.
5, I am definitely sealing around the plastic air bridge.

I was told that the complet intake system allows engine compartment air into the engine, as the box does not line up exactly as the stock box. I just went with filters instead of the complete intake.

I did the foam tape trick with mine as well. Worked like a charm.

Maybe you could send it back as you can't use the K&N with the Paxton anyhow.

I would not have, and did not, disconnect the battery as this will reset your computer. Give it some time to re-learn the new air flow. At least 6 start / stop cycles of the key with spirited driving each time.

After installing the K& Ns in my car, I noticed better throttle response, especially at higher speeds. You will need to check the two plastic "nozzle" type fittings to be certain they are correctly sized. I had to drill both of these in mine, though I have been told that K&N has fixed the problem. I also used foam tape to seal the openings and removed the plastic hood scoop deflector.

Good luck,

Dan

Viper X - is there any concerns with removing the deflector? Not that I drive in the rain, but isnt that to protect the filter from rain?

Re: K&N\'s installed...Not what I expected

Had the EXACT same problem when I did my last K&N install. The first install on my 2003 went perfectly, gained 15 hp. Brand new system (May) after K&N supposedly fixed the "drill out" issue was installed on my 2005. Not so on the fix: Both inlets were much smaller than the stock system. Drilled them out. Also noticed that my throttle cable had bumped off the half pulley (sorry, don't know the technical term). Still dropped 10 hp on the dyno and figured it was the computer relearning the system. Somebody else wanted to try my system on their SRT and picked up 12 hp on the dyno. Sold it to them on the spot and have not replaced it.

Now I'm worried about mine! I wonder if I lost hp by installing it since I didn't really know how throttle response should be before the install so I didn't really notice a difference when I got my cats/exhaust/k&n put on.

I don't think I would worry about this too much. We tested several SRT-10's on the dyno back in '04 and all responded well to the K&N's:

http://vca2.viperclub.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB21&Number=392021

I was just disappointed that I had to drill them out when I was assured they were the "new" version. Also bummed that my HP took a dive, but will go ahead and hope that it was a computer issue. I don't think the K&N filter system could ever lower HP in and of itself when properly installed (and ported correctly from the factory). I run one on my Denali anyway! ;)

Hey Nader,

No issues removing the deflector. Last winter I drove to Viper days at Buttonwillow during one of the nastiest storms in CA history. Rained on the car for 5 hours, from stop and go traffic up to 65 mph +. No water entry problems with the air filter (Paxton was on at the time).

I didn't have to drill a hole into mine but I did not disconnect the battery either (well the mechanic didn't) does it have to be disconnected?

Guys, All of you are talking about adding foam tape. Where are you adding this tape and why. I do not understand where on the Y pipe you are installing the tape. Are you putting tape around the hood scoop after removing the baffle? Are you drilling out the ports to the same size as the stock unit and do you have any pictures of the foam in place?

So are the people that had to drill the setup only having the problem or is it just a hit and miss thing?

Re: K&N\'s installed...Not what I expected

The small ports only caused a whistle nooise for me, no power loss.

The foam tape is to seal the joint between the airbox and the y pipe. I installed mine on the Y pipe such that you could not see it from the outside. It only helps reduce engine heated air from entering and should not impact the performance except when underhood temps are high, and then only minimally.

Re: K&N\'s installed...Not what I expected

The problem is solved as far as the bad running of the engine. As discused before one need to remove the baffle and then remove the K & N filter assembly and clean any oil from inside the throttle body. Also remove and clean the two sensors with electric motor cleaner and air dry. I looked at mine and found that the two hose connections were much smaller than the stock, my unit was the lster design i was told, so I drilled them out to the same size as the stock unit. The stock air box does not come even close to fitting tight around the K & N plastic T assembly so I would suggest putting foam tape around it between the air filter box and the T connector, make sure you check mit with a flashlight as there is a ton of room between the two. Next one needs to remove the factory baffle from the ram air duct in the hood and again use foam tape to seal between the air box and the hood so no outside air enters except throuh the hood scoop. Be sure to disconnect the negitive battery post, 10 mm socket, and leave it off for a few minutes so that the computer is reset. This made a whole world of difference on my viper. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR KEYS IN YOUR POCKET BEFORE DISCONNECTING THE NEGITIVE BATTERY BECOUSE WHEN YOU REATTACH THE BATTERY CABLE THE WHOLE SYSTEM GOES INTO ANTI-THEIF MODE AND SHUTS DOWN. JUST OPEN THE DOOR WITH YOUR KEY, UNDER THE SIDE SCOOPS ON THE DRIVER DOOR IS A KEY LOCK, AND GET IN AND START THE CAR AND LET IDLE FOR 10 MIN AND EVERYTHING WILL WORK AS IT DID BEFORE

Re: K&N\'s installed...Not what I expected

I'm having exactly the same issues ... don't think it has anything to do with oil getting anywhere, since it was like this right frome the beginning.

What drilling is everyone talking about? The fittings are elbow shaped right? How do you drill them?

Also, I'm thinking of drilling holes in the factory scoop baffel to let air through, but still stop any big water flow from the hood scoop...

I drilled out the holes -- the "whistle" is now gone. Waiting to see if (SOP)power has improved...
