Welcome to the family.

Adding a air intake and straight pipeing your cats is a good way to gain a cheap reliable 25 hp.

If you want a lot more I saw some ported gen2 heads in the for sale section. Probally an easy 40 plus hp to be gained from them.

Your a very lucky guy. Just think... Your an viper owner now! A dream realized that not many wake up to. Congrats and pictures please

Congrats!!!! Post pics!!!

Air intake will not increase HP, however not a bad investment to help her breathe a little better! Exhaust will unlock a bit of that hidden HP, and even if it doesn't it sure as hell will sound like it did!

Just make sure you do your homework, and do what YOU want to your car (of course assuming you plan on keeping the car).

Before you mod you should join the club! There is a lot of great people, ample amounts of info, and you will get a chance to use your car for what it was made for!

Congrats again!

Congratulations! Obviously, the first question from everybody is...where are the pictures? I bought a '95 two years ago. Type in your key words into the search engine on the forums home page and you’ll likely find an answer to all of your questions. There are plenty of folks to offer advice and troubleshooting over the phone. I used Chuck Tator (Viper Wizard) for my head gasket replacement guide. He’s extremely experienced and very patient. This is what I’ve learned with mine:

- The factory head gasket will eventually leak. Better check to make sure it has been changed out. The factory one is brown and your block will likely be stained green from weeping antifreeze. If you find out this is the case, better set aside some money and a weekend to replace it.

- Be careful changing the fuel filter. It's temperamental on the removal and installation. My new one popped off while I was trying to start it at work and petrol was pumping out on the pavement...embarrassing.

- A replacement hood will run you $10k, so make sure the accident isn’t your fault (I haven’t had to replace, but I’ve looked into the cost).

- I unplugged my skip shift solenoid (not saying you should) and zip tied the wires to another set of wires down by the gear box. Now I can shift gears without the annoyance of going from 1st to 4th while cruising a parking lot. It doesn’t affect the check engine light. You can also buy a skip shift eliminator.

- It’s low profile, so be weary of speed bumps and you’ll be a lot less stressed if you just accept the fact that you’re going to rub the bottom of your bumper from time to time.

- Tires cost less than a full size pickup.

- Twice or thrice a year you’ll want to adjust the throttle bodies. There is a left and a right and they aren’t mechanically interlocked. With the car TURNED OFF, squeeze the adjusters and pull them toward the windshield. Then sit in the driver’s seat and push the gas pedal all the way to the floor. You should hear the adjusters click.

- You have to completely take the battery off to kill the power (or that’s the only way I could do it). Simply unhooking the “jumper terminals” up by the driver’s side door won’t do it. The battery is behind the driver’s side rear wheel.

- I bought some reusable air filters because the throw away kind were mighty spendy and I could only get them from the manufacturer.

- Plenty of folks on this website that can hook you up with the parts you need at very reasonable prices and will offer all sorts of sound advice.

- Burp tank is basically behind the front passenger tire. If you turn it out and shine a light down, you should be able to see the level. I think there’s some sort of cap on the inner fender well you have to pop out to see the tank.

- My car runs at 225F in the summer…I thought that was running hot, but I’ve been told that it isn't. The red zone is what you need to fear.

- I get a better burnout in 2nd gear…there’s so much torque in 1st that it makes my rear end hop and that’s bad.

- She ***** in the snow.

Please give me some do's and dont's of these cars.

I like Corvettes as well, but I think you'll find the Viper to be 2x as inspiring and extreme. Not sure if they're national or regional, but see if you can get yourself one of the Club's T-shirts that read "God made Vipers so Vette guys would have heros"..... Nuff said ;-)

Depending on where you are at you might be able to make a holiday party nearby for the VCA.
Some regions are holding their parties this weekend so don't wait if you are interested.
Meet other VCA Viper owners and talk about Vipers.
Most regions are very welcoming to newbies and holiday events are very well attended.
They are also a way of finding out what events the region does during the year too.

Read up for whatever regional forum area you are from to see whats happening.
You can't post unless you are a VCA member in those areas but you can read threads and PM.
Congratulations on the Viper!

I have a 2008 Viper, which is nice.

But I have to say, there is nothing like a Gen1 (had one). Raw, bad to the bone, no nonsense, idles like a 69 Camaro, and is the true definition of the word "viper"(along with a G2 B/W GTS).

Congrats.!!!! thats a bad *** ride....

I too was a big vette fan till I got my first Viper--no comparison--still have some old vettes, but really rarely drive them--seems the Viper always wins out. I love the exclusivity of the Viper--vettes are everywhere where I live--Vipers extremely rare--Have fun --just be careful---Dave

Been there done that with my 1969 L71 (427x435) roadster, 3 year frame off resto got me NCRS Top Flight, 2000 RT/10 is easier to maintain :D I agree with 2whitevipers, I'd go out to my garage and try to choose between the two side by side, Viper always wins out unless I was going to a car show. Respect the torque, make sure the wheels are straight when you punch it or you'll go into a "death wiggle"

Congrats on your gen 1 purchase. ('95 was a great year for vipers.. the best of the gen 1s). Keep in mind,.... these early vipers are supposed to be exactly what you experience in yours. A bare-bones, high powered performance focused sports car with serious rubberneck twisting potential....

Do: Enjoy the car for what it represented back in the '90s. (a strictly performance oriented car. GM and 'vette lost the performance only focus for a while in the 70s and 80s. It took Viper to push GM back into the groove...IMO)

Don't: Forget that even a gen 1 will teach you the meaning of 'snake bit'

Have fun and enjoy your car. You know performance/mod questions will be answered here so search and ask.

- Cheers

Still a Vette owner too. We have an '81 Charcoal but haven't driven it since we got the Viper. :D
Are all of the fluids and filters up to date? Open that exhaust up. There is plenty of advice here as you'll find out.
Congrats on the purchase and get used to the power curve!
