New Viper runs rough with hand on shifter it is hard to tell time on my watch shifter is shaking badly at idle. Since the car has no miles on it I am being very careful. Accelerating very slowly first second and then third the car is surging missing and even popping thru exhaust on accel. At a stoplight I even hear a knocking noise when hot at idle from right rear motor area?...I noticed a greenish liquid around the coil pack and wonder if it is a bad coil it would make sense except for the knocking noise, which I can't hear outside the car only in. I will call Buhler tomorrow. The car would surge and pull but I thought it was the suspension. Tonight while going down a long (bummpy Hill) I put it in neutral and the bumps went away it's the motor making it run lumpy. When I bought the car the mech at dealership said they all run rough. Is that true. This one spits and pops going up or down the gears kinda sounds great. Any ideas thanks Rich

Schedule a date with Chuck Tator and let him check it out. The drive up to NY will be worth it. What you are describing, except for the decel popping, does not sound normal.

Are you sure you didn't buy a non-puff gen2? You've described my 97 gts to a tee... except for the green liquid thing. :D

You don't realize how lucky you are... we in the west coast don't get to enjoy having Tator a drive away.

You think plugs will help car did it from day one only 300 miles on it now. Called Buhler Dodge and he told me to take it to my local Dodge dealer he sure changed his tune after the purchase. Chuck Tator is about 80 miles away I feel I should tow the car I don't want to hurt the engine anymore. I will give Chuck a call. thanks

Go to Chuck, but yes, plugs may help. Dealers have a nasty habit of filling your gas tank with the cheapest, junkest gas they can find. They never fill it with brand name premium fuel around here.

Chuck's number is 914-763-3136, and his address is 20 Spring St. , South Salem, NY. 10590

Racer Robbie's comment that Dealers put in lousy gas is ludicrous and unfounded, and Buhler has a good reputation amongst Viper Dealers.Insinuating they would do this is highly unprofessional. Plugs are seldom the problem either, and your best diagnosis would be to get it into the shop for proper check. I am sure Buhler could assist you also, but I do believe Mr. Tator is closer to your locale.

Popping under light acceleration is an ignition problem. With a brand new car, NOT NORMAL.

Brand new, maybe a hose clap is loosse or mislighned on the heater assy, and has squirted coolant on the coilpaks and is causing the rough idle and the misfire.

This is a WARRANTY ISSUE, and NOT NORMAL.

There is a 1-800-number in your warranty papers. get the car flat-bedded to the closest of TATOR or BUHLER. Go where you intend to service the car.

(Thank Your Lucky Stars you are only 80 miles from Tator....guys will go 500+ miles to have Chuck work on their car)

It can't be the gas Buhler didn't bother to fill my viper up when I picked it up I drove straight to the nearest decent gas station and put 93 in it. Jon B has been wonderful with his advice and even called the dealer to help me out. Thanks Jon for the time and effort and great parts and prices. Rich

I am concerned driving the car with engine running so poorly I would have to trailer it to Tator. It isn't the cost it's just the abuse of putting it on a trailer. I am going to have Scott the viper guy at Warnock Dodge here in town take a look at it. He seems like he works on lots of vipers and is doing mods on three this week. He can look at it monday I will stay with the car and see what he says. I believe it is something real simple in the ignition circuit. If not I will tow it to Tator. Thanks for the help Rich

Both the dealer that I bought mt viper and Grand Cherokee told me they put in regular when both called for preminum. So did the dealer I bought my Marauder from. It is to bad that great dealers like Buhler and Tator do not open here in Ct as we do have highly unprofessional dealers around here in Ct on the new Haven to Stonington waterfront. You are lucky you have great dealers where you are.
I am stilol putting off the headlight recall as Tators is about 2-1/2 from me.

Yes i do have triple A. I just talked with Chuck Tator he is closed this week but he thought it was probably simple enough for Warnock to take a look. He thought maybe spark plug wire or PCM or cam sensor amd not to drive it because I might destroy the cats from over rich mixture. Although since Buhler said that there was nothing wrong with the car they all run rough I have already driven it 300 miles. Is it possible Buhler is right that on light acceleration it should surge and stubble. Nice talking with Chuck but he felt for such a minor problem they should be able to identify the cause.

Mine has never had any surge or stumble, no matter what rpm or throttle position. All vipers shake a little at idle and shake even more with the compitition coupe tramsmission mount installed. As I said before, pull the plugs and look at them, check the gaps. Replace them as they are cheap and be bought at any store that sell Champion. This is a cheap place to start and you can do it in your driveway. If this does not solve your problem then I would look at what Chuck Tator said to do.
