Power steering is too tight.

My GTS' power steering feels non-existant AT TIMES. But that's the keyword: AT TIMES. I have changed the fluid and the problem has not gone away. This has existed for a long time now but of late, it's gotten really bad. It's worse in slow speed turns (parking lots, exit ramps) but now it's been showing up at highway speeds too.

I want to work on it myself. How do I diagnose what might be failing and how hard is it to do a complete power steering system removal, cleanup, inspection and installation. What are the aftermarket options?

Likely culprit is the PS pump / pulley ..........or maybe the Rack, unlikely.
Is the OE plastic pulley buggered? Does the belt make noise or show signs of fray / edge wear?

be 100% certain to replace the plastic pulley and cast bracket with billet. (from Dave's Big Brakes/PartsRack please) Under $200 for BOTH.

P/S pulley is a known issue. Likey that is your problem. If you try to move it back and forth, look at the base where it attaches to the Pump shaft. Any movement means it has failed. Fairly easy fix, just not a fast fix.

I thought that power steering pulley failures were catastrophic, belt throwing affairs ? I can't picture it failing and just slipping on the shaft after seeing the cracks that were developing in mine.

However, if that is your issue, get it fixed now before it gets worse.

Have the same problem.

Marked the pulley and shaft - no movement.

Right now, focusing on PS Pump - new is $550 ... YIKES!!

That may work, but it looks like a Gen 1 pump which will not work on a Gen II.

Will investigate.
