you will most likely need to wait until the 08s become scarce...not much incentive to buy an 06 right now

When I was shopping for my '06 coupe, there were dozens of convertibles that were in ads for months. It seems like the coupes were the only ones moving ~slightly~ sooner, but not much quicker.

The pre-08 cars are a much better bang for the buck vs a new 2008 car. But, in a year or so when we start seeing used 2008s hit the market, our pre-08 cars are probably doomed on resale value.

FYI... I just bought a red/silver stripes '06 cpe. The car has 3300 miles, ripper shifter, Corsa track exh. and best of all, a Quaiffe diff. I ran the car on "car fax", "autocheck" etc. All good.

I know this is a little exceptional but I paid,... $50 K.

At that price I am currently in negotiations with Jeff to build a "Street Serpent Coupe"! Yeehaaaa...:D

i think the market is real funny right now....
it seems to me the 06 viper started dropping in price shortly after the zo6 came out, but...
now we have the 08, and in all honesty, how many 08's have really been sold AND DELIVERED? not many. they dont make many anyway.
but from an economical standpoint, is the 08 worth 30k over a used 06? probably not.
i think once some warmer weather hits and the true die hards get their 08s, the 06 will sell again. they both look abt the same, so to most ppl, saving 30k is more important than 95hp.
just my o2.
i dont recall seeing a 30k jump from one model year to the next like this without major engine AND BODY revisions....
weird. lets see what happens this spring/summer.
dodge would do well to stick to the 1200 or so quantity build, as there isnt much buzz abt this car. again, after the die hards and the "gotta haves," they would have a hard time convincing most ppl to pony up another 30k for an almost identical looking car.

It's a mixed blessing...prices are great for buyers, ***** for owners. You can't linger over resale value...just enjoy it while you have it. I refuse to look at ebay, auto-trader, etc. to see what my RT/10 may be worth. I'd rather spend the time driving and enjoying the investment I made in having fun with it.

here we go again.. to me an 08 is NOT an identical car to the 06

'the 08 Viper. So it's got the brand new, variable valve timing, all-aluminum V10; 600 horsepower, 560 lb-ft of torque.

Because of the engine's brute force, we had to beef up the rest of the drivetrain (on all 2008 Vipers), so it goes like this: Stuck on the back of the motor, instead of the big, single-plate clutch, is now a smaller-diameter, dual-plate, dual-disc clutch that reduces our rotating inertia by about 18 percent. So throttle response is pretty damn good.

We backed that up with a modified and improved T6060 Tremec 6-speed manual transmission. It's a double-overdrive manual gearbox. What's unique about it is that we changed the synchronizers in first and second from a double cone to a triple cone synchronizer; it gives really nice first-second shift feel to the car.

The gears are cut wider to take the torque. They actually have a 10-percent wider gear face on 'em to manage the additional torque.

And then the axle is basically the same architecture, but it's got a brand new differential in it. We had what was called a Hydro-Lok in the previous generation car--which was the '06. We didn't have an '07 model year, we went from '06, ran that long and then we went to '08.

This car has what's called a Visco-Lok. What makes this really unique is that it has its own sump that it uses to generate the hydraulic pressure that brings the clutches to bear when the axle goes into differential activity. This is much more precise, it's much more progressive, and it allows you to put the power down much more easily coming out of the turns.

The older differential used the actual sump that was in the axle, and sometimes it would take a few milliseconds to prime--very short, but it was enough that you'd spin up the inside wheel and then when the clutch would come on it would upset the car, because it was a really abrupt engagement. The Visco-Lock is not like that, it's a real improvement.

i agree with u. however to many ppl who potentially have 90k to throw at a sports car in this slow economy, the drivetrain might not matter as much. most folks figure the 06 viper is fast enough.
hey, id like an 08 too, im just looking at it all from a different perspective. not everyone who buys a viper is a total hp ****** believe it or not. (i am a hp ******, but ill save that for another thread.)
my point being is that 30k is pretty steep between 2 model years that are aesthetically similar.

I couldn't believe it either! It took me about 4 mos. to finally get it. With the money I saved....the "Street Serpent coupe" will be in my garage.

Somewhat off topic but...I can't say enough about the Quaiffe. The rumors are true...no spinning left to right from a "dig". The car just goes straight and best of all, more control. And of course the cornering 'rumors" are true also. I love it!

I got one for my 01 GTS yesterday.

Wow, $50K for that '06 coupe? that is about 10K lower than any I've seen. Wanna sell it for $51K? lol

Congrats on the score!

That is an amazing price. I would have been all over that. Glad to see you were lucky enough to pick it with or without the mods at that price.

Did you check to make sure that is not a SRT Driving experience car?? I could have sworn they used one with that color combo.

I thought the same thing. I got a production report for 06 cpes. (How many, color combos etc) At the bottom there was an asterisk stating that there were "a handful of red/silver striped cars that were put into the Skip Barber school. I started thinking, track exhaust, shifter and a Quaiffe...that's were the car came from. But after running the VIN, both reports were identical. The car was sold in the South and licensed in New Jersey. Even a record of getting the power steering pump serviced at a dealership. I am hoping I just lucked out...

This is the summary of the 06 (Red) coupe report;

There were 206 units built in Red for 2006 Coupes. There were a handful of the Red/Silver Striped cars if not purchased new that were put into the Skip Barber Racing School . 91 Car were produced with Silver Factory Stripes and the build numbers are also based on the wheels option, 10 spoke, 5 spoke. .

I paid $75K for a Copperhead Orange with Black stripe car with 5 spokes this past year, 400 mi on the odo. Production numbers say it's 1 of 9 ever made in that combo, with only 50 coupes ever sprayed orange total in 2006.

Other than the 300 Copperhead verts made the year prior, it's pretty rare, and all the comments, stares, and thumbs up I get makes it worth every penny.

I am thinking I could always get $65K for it if they never spray that color again.

On the other hand, if you have a red vert with 10-spokes - how many were made and are out there? A lot. I am thinking what is going to happen in the future is the rarer cars, including Bumble Bee and Snake Skin Green, etc. will be commanding some better dollars than the mass produced color combos.

Truthfully, if I hadn't seen the color combo I have, I may have not bought a Viper at all, or if I did, I would have bargain hunted for one a few years older and got the lowest price I could find.

Who cares if it was? It doesn't have enough mileage on it to be beaten up that bad. That's a steal no matter how the car was driven!!!

Congrats on the great find!!!:2tu:

I wonder if the fact that they only make 1500ish per year has anything to do with the low demand? Out of site out of mind.

Most people even here in PB, love the car and say they've never seen one in person.

I would of never thought to buy the GTS had I not seen one for the first time in 2003.

It wouldn't have mattered to me if it was a SB Driving school car. That means it was well maintained and "stretched out" and ready to go. I have had the car checked out by several people. The only comment I keep hearing from every one after they "check out" the car is, "I can't believe you got this car for $50k".

I have a chance to get a good deal on some 19's for the front and 20's for the rear. I have a set of Eibachs in the trunk. Might try and snag some Motons from the guy I got the car from. I am sending Jeff the deposit today to become "SS coupe #1" (car #7) I will paint the car Sapphire to match my 01 GTS... Can't wait. All because I "got a good deal".

I listed my 06 FE with 3,000 miles but with many mods. I received a deluge of offers from dealers who were bottom fishing in the mid 50 range. I had one serious offer in the mid 60s. I turned it down. 06 Vipers are great deals right now in this soft market. Good luck.

Treesnake......nice car!! (and great deal!!)

I don't really care about what my car is worth in today's market (it's a blip in time)....heck, when the gas crunch came in the early 70's I'm sure a lot of guys were lamenting what their Cobra's and Hemi's were worth....and maybe even a few sold them. However history shows that the best cars always rise in value over time....will a Viper be worth more than a Corvette of the same year 30 years from now? You bet!! And if I enjoy driving my Viper for 30 more years (hopefully 45-55 more years) and it brought a HUGE smile to my face every time I drove it....well then it was priceless!

Regards,
Aaron
