Scratched Viper idea and going with a C7 Z06

I don't see how they will sell any volume to fresh new Viper buyers. It ****** me off that SRT doesn't unlock that PCM and at least let the tuners upgrade the GEN5. That has been one of the issues holding me back from snatching one up. I want to be able to mod my engine without requiring a standalone. If I wanted a bump in over 100HP, I'd be looking at $20k with the GEN5. This would cost a measly $1000 tops for a tune and pulley on the Z06. Why doesn't SRT just give us a track fuel MAP option that opens the floodgates if MPG's are a concern? It could be turned on in the computer. And for those that say the Viper has more than enough power, you forgot what the Viper once was. It was once a mod king back in the day, capable of nearly doubling its output without needing a piston/rod/crank overhaul. There is never enough power and why would they bother putting forged parts on in the first place? It's like finding out that your really hot wife came with a chastity belt and you weren't given the key.

I think that depends upon how many people actually plan on modding their engines. I have no interest, it is so damned fast as it is, I have no want for more. What is higher priority is maintaining my factory warranty and long term powertrain driveability, especially to withstand the punishment a road course puts out. I know there are plenty out there that want to mod, but there would have to be a lot of them before it would affect sales significantly.

Why do people think the ACR is going to cost a fortune? I bet it will be much closer in price to the SRT than anywhere near a fully loaded GTS. It's the luxury items that drive the price way up, and the ACR is not built for that.


But they didn't tell you which tires the ZR1 was running they beat ;)

Yes, the ZR1 also didn't get a private test day. The GTS and SRT both improved by well over a second, I think closer to 1.5 seconds actually) on the private test day with Ralph having called Randy a punk which got the bit between his teeth.

This Z06 has a lot of integrated aero within the body. You can tell the development it has shared with the C7R. Even the TA is not going to win head to head. Yes SRT could give it a much better chance with some Trofeo R or MPSC 2, and they better, because when this thing comes out, it's not going to take any prisoners.

That is a photoshop. The real car could not lawfully have the almost nill wheel well tire clearance or what looks like about a one inch clearance from the bottom of the front splitter to the ground. But it does look very mean.

Actually that car would be quite legal. Laws pertaining to tire clearance of the wheel well do not specifically exist other than the tire is required to turn freely. Tire width laws do exist in most states as the tire cannot extend past the body of the car. Kentucky and a couple other states are exceptions. There is nothing of the wheel well clearance that would make it illegal. Maybe not wise but certainly not illegal.

Depends on what state you are in. This quote from an article on the subject:

Ground clearance is ****. Does size matter? You betcha. Many states have minimum street clearance for street legal vehicles. It may be measured by body clearance of wheel rims. Hydraulic suspension lift may be restricted to a few inches as well. Utah requires three inches of ground clearance, excluding tires, rims or mud flaps. You can’t remove main springs or shocks.

And many states have bumper height regs but they are usually keyed into the OEM bumper height. For instance:[h=3]Georgia[/h]Modification of original vehicle bumper height or altering suspension system is illegal if altered more than 2 inches above or below factory recommendations.

Lastly, there are Federal regs regarding how the bumper acts in a collision with a pedestrian. The car at the show looks very low to me. I doubt the production street version 's front fascia will be lower than 4 inches from the ground.

Guess that wasnt a photo shop version after all. AS far a ground clearance, it looks about normal. And if it is lower then GM put it out there that way. The same as SRT did for the reveal in NYC. It all marketing hype we know that.

Hmmm, interesting read, really like the quote that says, "Most Viper owners are real jack asses (seriously..)" BUT the guy who said that bought a Gen V anyway! :)

But it seems to be the case I have owned a couple of Vipers and to be honest have been less than thrilled with most of the people I have met in the Viper community. Many act as if the Viper is the God of cars and nothing is or ever will be better.

I will add that I have met a few awesome and down to earth people.

An example of one of many experiences was a car meet "Viper" cruise. I was on a cruise the previous week with many models of cars from vettes, Vipers, GTRs, even a camaro. It was a great time nice guys and cool cars. This was a Vette cruise but I was welcome with my Viper. The week of the Viper cruise I asked if a few of my friends with Vettes could tag along, answer... sorry this is a Viper only event. Seriously??? Not like it was a car show. It was a fall cruise with lunch, the way I look at it as did the Vette club, the more the merrier, cool cars are and should always be welcome. This was a huge turn off at the club and another reason and incident that shows exactly what the guy who posted on the corvette forum said.

There are some events that, because they might be subsidized or partly subsidized by the chapter, can only be member events unless the non member participant pays the full amount. The local and Federal non profit rules dictate same. The same rule goes for raffles. Only qualified members can participate.

There was no club coverage on this event it was a fall cruise, and lunch was to be paid by each person. It just ***** I have been in the Viper community for over 10 years and have experienced so many experiences that have just given me a bad opinion of "Viper owners" in general. There is always more crying on the Viper sites about the Corvette than there are people crying on Corvette sites about the Viper. I don't get it to be honest. I wish we could all get along and enjoy these cars ALL cars for what they are and not be so pig headed or racists... get it,,, race ists. LOL

You are right. We should all be grateful for the competition between and among brands. It produces incredible vehicles. As for your Viper people experience, maybe it is not because they are Viper owners. Perhaps it is because they are depressed by the Albany winters. The site phenomenon is likely due to the fact that there are a zillion Vette owners and less than 25,000 ( net of wrecks) total Viper owners. Viper owners, in general, like the car, tend to be a bit more independent and harder to please. LOL.

It goes without saying that the suggestion that Viper owners are jack asses is false, as I'm sure fair minded people would agree with. I've heard the same thing about Vette owners, Porsche owners, Etc. We definitely have our share of jerks, just visit the Alley and you'll find a few there. So does every group. There are some with chips on their shoulders on this forum, the Corvette forum, and the Camaro forum I frequent. But when I've visited with Viper owners in our local club as well as at the Western Zone Rendezvous, they were down to earth, likable people.

I don't think that writer should believe he can just categorize all Viper owners as jackasses. He may be encountered a few but that doesn't mean we are all like that.

Just like Venom V said: we do have our share of jerks esp on Viper Alley but they are in the minority.

I've been to one gathering by the MidSouth club and everyone was very helpful, hospitable and went out of their way to make me and my wife feel welcome.

Prior to purchasing a Viper five years ago I was a diehard Vette guy since 85 and in the local Vette club there were some jerks but most were not.

Other clubs have some, I say some asses too but I would never try to stereotype a group of car owners based on one or two experiences. For instance, I've heard Porsche owners are
asses but the local club invited me to a breakfast and the guy who invited me made it a point to tell me "Make sure and bring your Viper."

This car will sink Gen 5 prices....fast. Good for those of us that are waiting for the right deal...ha!

The C7 Z06 will probably run high 10 second quarter miles and have a base price of $78k. GM will sell a **** ton of them. Looks are important to me and i still dont care for the rear end. The look is growing on me though

Yes, I visited the alley.... The reason I made that comment [over on the corvette forum] is because most viper owners I have met have been complete jackasses to me... I understand that ALL owners are not necessarily jackasses, but generally speaking, most of them (that I have both met and not met <online>) ARE jackasses. There are a few of you in this thread that have been very nice to me.

My problem is this: I am a nice unassuming person.. I go to car shindigs pretty regularly (and I may show up in my Honda or one of my exotics...) and attempt to talk to folks (I'm a very cordial person) and I am almost always met with extreme arrogance and a disrespectful tone (to the point that I can't continue the conversation) when talking to the Viper guys. They are judging me and making assumptions. Very common for them to make assumptions that I'm not an owner, driver, enthusiast - or even that I can comprehend what they are saying (when it is they, in fact, that [usually] don't have any idea what they are talking (especially when true when they start talking big mods or boost).

This is the reason that I haven't reached out to the local Viper Club.. Based on my in-person experiences at car shows and the viperalley folks... Well, based on this, suffice it to say, I bought the Gen V ONLY because it looks like pure sex on wheels, mod potential and really does well at the track. NOT because of the cool Viper folks that like to have car-related gatherings in my area-because I sure haven't met them!

Now, with all of this being said, if you've taken the time to actually read this, then you are most likely one of the folks that are just like me - a pretty nice unassuming fella... So, I'm sorry to generalize but surely you can see why I made the statement?

In closing, The C7Z is going to obliterate the Gen V on the track and the strip. However, it looks like every other Corvette on the road.. As noted in the thread on the other forum- I'll have to own one when they are available but I won't be trading a Gen V in for one!! LOL

Hi. Yes. I will be bringing either the truck or the Jeep. They show me as bringing the supercharged Viper. They plugged it in from the last time. It is a fun event with a great group of people. See you there.

Your going to get plenty of arrogance from any car owner who bought his or her car to prove some kind of financial point. There are plenty of people like this out there. I've noticed it more and more lately, especially among the non gear heads. Volkswagen had a great commercial stereotyping Viper owners, and I'd say it nails some owners spot on to a tee. I've met plenty of really great people, and it's really unfortunate that you joined this forum at the worst time. It seems that when the Viper was number one almost everything was great here, as the Viper got its butt handed to itself the real ugly side of many members came to fruition.

Anyway, enough of that, enjoy that awesome machine you've got. It's really too bad your not geographically closer, as I'd love to see some of your turbo projects. May the wrench be with you:D

Odd,bragging about the TA all day long,(some deserved/so not),seems like you would like to try to do a 10 sec pass..Guess Not.....It really would not be any competition to the AWD PDK Turbos cars anyway at the drag strip....

LOL. Provocative posts only work with Porsche owners. A TA actually takes a skill set to drive. No bragging as all who read the posts can tell. Just reporting the facts about a road course car that was well designed and engineered. But you know that.

See you on the 26th where we can watch your car take you for a ride down the quarter mile.

You are so persistent about this I have to ask. Do you own a piece of a Porsche dealership?

Base price is just over $51k. Your friend threw on $20k in options.

Z06 msrp hasnt been released yet, but it will he a little more than the C6 version. You have to keep in mind that C6 Z06 prices are $75k base to over $100k with all bells/whistles and aero package/track tires.

Even though 9 out of 10 posts by you are about owning a 991 turbo S, no one cares you have a turbo S that a high school girl could run 10's in her first time sitting in the car.

If you didn't notice, this isn't rennlist - of course he is going to talk about his Gen V TA.

I'm glad someone said something, I was biting my tongue. If ever there were a repetitive bragger on this site who is a borderline troll, it's FLL. He should change his name to FULL-OF-PORSCHE-BS. He brings to mind a very fitting Porsche porcupine joke, but I won't go there.

I mean, don't get me wrong - I love the turbo S and if all goes well this year might buy one - but to constantly blab how fast your turbo S is, where anyone can buy one and run the same times as you - is just nothing to be proud of IMHO. Tony hitting 10's through skill is impressive. Letting a computer do it for you, isn't.

Hey we get it, he wrote a check for $180,000 to buy one, congrats - go have a cookie.

It's a shame that some people are content if they could get in a car and go to sleep and the car run 10's and record lap times with zero input from the driver.
