Scratched Viper idea and going with a C7 Z06

Yes..That's just not fun at all. I've had auto cars that could run a certain number every time and then manual v ipers. Cutting my gen3s time from 12.2 @119 to 11.4 @ 126.... sure it took money for some modifications. But the practice and run after run and then finally doing everything right and hitting a new best....mthats jus somthing you won't experience in a awd paddle shifted car.

As far as mr. Porsche....he's been doing this for as long as I can e member at this point. I figure.hey, the guys comin and posting here regularly so he probally in as ome kind of viper denial. Love hate kinda deal

Going fast is fun.. No matter the technology (or lack thereof) to get you there... However, Mr. Porsche was too busy bragging here to answer a simple PM when I was trying to find a local Viper dealer (we live in the same area and he had just boasted that he knew where plenty were for a fair price) that would sell one at a fair price...

Those are the same options the ZO6 will start with, throw on the SC and ceramic brakes and you are at 90K.

Base price is just over $51k. Your friend threw on $20k in options.

Z06 msrp hasnt been released yet, but it will he a little more than the C6 version. You have to keep in mind that C6 Z06 prices are $75k base to over $100k with all bells/whistles and aero package/track tires.

The winner of the race ,is the winner...So,stay in that old shifting mind set and get embarrassed these new High Tect Cars(McLarens,Turbo Ss,GTRs and the new C7 Z06.)Viper are so Bad Ass,SRT,just needs to step up like the other brands have.As,soon as they do,I will be the first so buy a new Viper..

History repeats itself and GM is doing almost exactly what they've done in the early '90s. It worked for them then and will most likely work again 24 years later. In 1990 GM started selling the c4 ZR-1 that was almost double the horsepower (375hp) and double the price of the base vette (base price of ZR-1 was ~$60k). Nothing could touch it for the first couple of years until the introduction of the viper of course. The production ran for 5 years until the final year 1995, and by then the LT5 was rated at 405hp. Now where GM dropped a ball is they waited until 2001 to introduce the z06 with pretty much the same hp as the outgoing ZR-1, but at a base price of i beleve around $45k. They stole a huge share of the sports car maket. Sound familiar??

Now fastward to today, they've improved the formula in that the outgoing ZR1's are still sitting at the lots and they are already introducing a more powerfull and capable Z06 at a fraction of the. ZR1. Only time will show if the car is indeed as good as it sounds on paper, and if so and if SRT does not come up with a drastic iteraion of ACR, they might be in trouble. The die hard Viper owners will not care much about the permanence differences, or how aggressive or pretty it is, but anyone trying to get into the exotic sport car market at a resonable price will most likely opt for the Z06. Of course in the end, it's still a vette, and will not have the exclusivity of a Viper. ;) Just my 2 cents.

In one to two years there will be a Vette on every corner and only die hard car guys will be able to distinguish the Z06 from a base Vette. Nothing looks or sounds like a Viper, and the Gen Vs proudly carry the tradition on.

I have never understood this logic. To me it screams of someone who strives attention. I don't care weather I was out in my Viper or out in my Zr1. Either car got what I feel was unwanted attention. And people making the usual comments. I don't buy or drive any car for the attention it may grab, or if people know if its a gts, SRT 10, ACR, TA, Z51, grand sport, Z06, or ZR1.

I buy a sports car for performance, and looks. I completely agree that the viper is a better looking car, but the corvette looks pretty damn good as well. And at the end of the day its personal opinion. But as this quote states apparently to them and others, it's about what other people think. Or at least that's what that comment screams to me.

That was perfect. I think I saw the same phenomenon on a Nissan GT-R site before. Zero driver skill = might as well ride a rollercoaster.

I'm also bored with FLL's constant 911 nut-swinging here. I honestly think he sits there before every response he makes, trying to figure out how he can incorporate a mention of owning a Porsche, or ordering a Porsche, into every single response. This is a Viper club website, if we all wanted a Porsche we'd be hanging out on a Porsche club website. Giving opinions about various cars here and there is okay, but this guy does it every single day.

Hey FLL, do you own a Porsche? (leaving you an intro, so you can talk about your car again).

Say what you want about speed looks and interior......others also viewing your special to you car as noteworthy adds another area to ownership. I remember being 22 years old andand seeing a bsx viper or above. It was a special and rare occurrence. Just seeing these kinda cars made me happy the whole day back then. I'd even call friends and tell them about what I just saw.

Having a viper or above.......your doing that for people. Your bringing joy. A vette...your missing out on an element of ownership that until you've e presences you cant really understand

To add to this a bit, I would go back to the root of the comment. Why is it that the vette is invisible and the Viper is not? That is really the question and just my thought, if you are spending this kind of money, you want to feel good about it. For some, it is bragging about the performance (they could not achieved if they tried). For others, about claiming how its a "drivers car with no nannies". For others, it is fit and finish. And lastly for others, it is just purely the feeling it gives you looking at it. The first couple are only interesting to car people that have done research (or I guess believe what they read in magazines), but in either case are enthusiasts of some sort. But in the end, I think less about the desire to have others interested or approval in your car, but more around why are more interested in your car? In that answer I believe is the answer to why the owner prefers one over the other. It looks and feels special. As much as I love vettes (I do), they have not looked "special" since the C2 years in coupe or conv.

Looks are subjective, performance is not.

When the argument falls to a personal preference, its in the same category as the HP/liter argument ricers resort to.

If your car selection is primarily based on what you think other people will think at a car show, I'd say you might have some serious self esteem issues.
I'm sure a guy with a new C7 feels just as good about his car as a Viper owner does, and obviously isn't as worried about another one at a car show.
Bushido above will buy one, track it and enjoy it without worrying about seeing another one.

The new Z06 stirs the emotions, no doubt, but for me, the emotions are nausea. I was hoping they would have at least changed that rear on the new Z06 but that designer must have pictures of the GM President with farm animals or something. It defies logic and is right up there with the Pontiac Aztec. Hey might be the same designer, dunno! BTW, who do you have to know to get the Viper Owner title back. Seems requests go into space here!

I checked your user profile yesterday in an effort to figure out if you have/still have a Viper, and your posting history to figure out why you post the way you do in this forum. Hey, I'm a newb, but this whole thing of knocking the Gen V with your constant posting about your 911TS is making you look like a troll. Maybe not your goal, but that is what trolls do. And the stirring up they do is for their fun, and theirs alone...and that's the result of all your stirring. Just a heads up FWIW.

You recently posted that you'd consider a Gen V if they make it mod friendly, but that came off as ingenuine and completely unlikely given the nature of most of your posts, and just an obvious attempt at a defense of your negative stirrings. Just my 2 cents worth.

Wow can't believe this thread has so much activity. I started the thread thinking I was sold on the new Z06 because I really liked how it looked in the press release images. I've spent a lot of time over the last week reading up on the new Z06 over at the corvette forum. It does look like a sweet car and sounds like it will beat the gen V viper in just about every category. But to the average person it will be just another Corvette, not that there's anything wrong with that. I'm not really one who's ******** into performance, I pretty much just buy a car that I really like and will enjoy driving from point a to point b. For example most people do a cam and headers for added horsepower but I did just for the sound because I love the way a cammed LS7 rumbles. Both the Viper and Z06 are way more car then I would ever need but I think they are two of the most beautiful cars on the road. I decided I'm going to switch it up and join the Viper camp once I'm able to afford one. I've never really liked the idea of buying a used sports car but I'm sure there will be plenty of low mile very well taken care of '13 Vipers out there. I've seen a couple brand new GTS models go for $100k on EBay recently so I'm crossing my fingers I can pick one up for around 85-90k sometime late in the year but who knows. An orange TA would be my ultimate dream car but I don't see the prices being in my range anytime soon. I suppose I could always pick up a SRT as well.

Wanna do ANYTHING else in a sporting fashion and be entertained from 0mph, 20mph, part throttle, full throttle, low/medium/high speed turns, incredible steering feel, incredible chassis feel, etc, for the rest of your life in the most engaging American street car ever made? -> Gen 5 Viper

It is really that simple. There was a guy on an Italian exotic forum, who said it best (talking about dct transmissions, awd, and performance traction management, and generally how speed-appliance newer cars are becoming), I paraphrase: "We all have moments of weakness when confronted with the latest car that has unbelievable performance, and so we go buy it and it is fun... for awhile, and then we realize the fun is really tied to insane road-driving, straight-line blasts, or track-only experiences, and we end up selling it and the cycle possibly begins anew..."

I just sold my C6 Z06 after putting 56,000 hard driven miles on it, and while I've never driven a car more brilliant at 9/10ths+ (even slightly better than the Gen V imho, and the Gen V is damn good), I don't miss the car at all outside of that extreme use-case. Once you get past the eye-popping straight-line and quite nice sound with an aftermarket exhaust, it isn't very engaging to drive in the guise of a street-car. You must be in full attack mode for it to really warm the soul (and it is a near religious experience at 10/10ths if you have the skill and balls), and so if it isn't your trackbeast then one day I bet you too will be selling with few regrets!

One of the most rewarding street cars I have owned in a 3-pedal E60 M5 (with aftermarket exhaust). It isn't particularly exceptional at any one thing, but once you drive that V10 powertrain the way it wants to be driven, it is one of the best experiences I have had from 0-8/10ths. This is from a porky 4,100 pound sedan! It falls down a bit at the extremes but who is driving a street car at extremes on a regular basis?

Listen to this advice and save yourself a lot of money: Buy the most engaging cars you can, the ones that never get old, the ones with tons of personality in as many possible modes of operation as possible, the ones that you can't stop thinking about and are constantly scheming for a reason to drive them again. Chase the latest, greatest, and fastest things at your own peril. It will lead you to a dark, dark place (that leads to what I call GTR / 991 Turbo syndrome...).

Frankly I hope the magazine-racers move on from the Gen V and leave it be to the enthusiasts who are wise enough to know what they have stumbled upon, and how rare such a currently produced car will be in the very near future...
