That "magical" plastic is a deflector, to guide the air sideways and downward. the air filters are a couple inches below. It also helps keep out rainwatter.

I thought it might have something to do with that. The reason why I asked was not to criticize the car, however, I am actually thinking about upgrading to one. I just want to be sure on this issue first.
