I've seen a few older tt cars from pretty famous tuners for sale...do they have a life expectancy due to the higher stresses, or if done right are they the same as a usually car.

Thanks

no chance of a boosted car having the same life expectancy. you cant double or triiple the engines power and expect that. with that said though 99% of the boosted cars have hardly any miles on them. if you want to buy one MAKE SURE TO DO A LEAKDOWN TEST before buying it. not just a compression test. its mostly the tune that you need to worry about, you can have the best built engine in the world and a bad tune will ruin it in minutes. detonation is a killer

Find roy on the forum. He has owned many TT vipers. He would be your best person to ask. I think he is on his 13th viper or something like that and most of them have been boosted.

don't expect a big power TT motor to last more than 5k miles or so between refreshs.

Edit: if it is driven like it should be :D

They all eventually blow up and cost a lot of money to fix. If you want a faster car than a Viper there are many options available. Consider a TT Viper like a boat.....hole you throw money in. Talk to any TT owner and ask for the "truth".

That's alot of 1/4 Mile passes! :D

A well built, well maintained forged engine can last 10s of thousands of miles. I have seen TT cars with 30K plus on the same engine build and the motor still look great.

Now if the car is going to be a race purpose build, then expect to have the engine apart fairly often.

There are several basic things that make a boosted TT last.

1. An efficient T-4 based twin turbo system that will have a lower back pressure to boost pressure ratio that is easier on the engine and will make any given set of tuning parameters safer as compared to a T-3 setup with a higher back pressure ratio.

2. An intercooler system that does not interfere with the cooling system of the car by blocking the radiator with a front mount intercooler.

==> Remember, if a front mount intercooler blocks 80 %of the air was intended by the engineers who built the Viper to flow through the radiator to dissipate the heat of the cooling system and the engine oil and then pre heats the remaining 20 of the air that 'might' get through by 30 degrees above ambient, this is a recipe for disaster when doubling to tripling the output of the stock engine.

3. The tune needs to be spot on for longevity.

There are very few turbo cars out there that have these three attributes therefore the lack of reliability and the stigma of being a money pit above and beyond breaking drive line parts.

I agree with Plum, but in addition I would like to say that I have owned quite a few TWIN TURBO and Blown cars and have NEVER had any problems with any of them, no more then a everyday car......when you drive it on a daily basis as you do any other and don't get into the boost, there is no additional stress or strain on the motor. I have taken a lot of these cars to the track, ran, had fun and then back on the road I baby them and treat them just like the rest of people do that are proud of and take care of their Hotrods....People are afraid of these cars because they have never owned one and don't know anything about them.........they are every bit as dependable and drivable as your car is...I do not street race and don't abuse my cars. It is the thrill of driving them and knowing what they are capable of doing when you want too, but you also gotta respect the car because they will get away from you in a New York minute if you don't.

:omg: :omg: Can't speak for everyone with a TT car, but I bought my car with 12,000 miles & now have appx 31,000 miles. :headbang: The only trouble I've had was the O2 sensors went out. I changed, but couldn't tune. So Brought it to Will @ RSI & they tuned on dyno. 788 / 850 HP The car purrs like a kitten. One of the most "Driveable" car I've ever had & absolutely the most powerful I've ever driven. :burnout: Will said my car is "very Strong". Now I change oil (Mobil One) every 3,000 miles & don't "Track" the car, mainly use for Car Shows & Cruise nites. But TT cars aren't for everyone. Most would kill themselves within the first 3 months. But what a Drug. :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

I would think a properly built forged TT stroker car putting down 4 digits of power would last AT LEAST 30,000 trouble free miles. Sure they would be finicky and need tweaking frm time to time. But breaking down the motor and refreshing components? Sure depending on how you drive you may break or wear mechanical drivetrain components.

As Paolo said, is heat the big killer for viper TT engines?

Would love to hear Will, Dan, or Todd's opinion.

Edit: what is the expected life of a 1000hp TT Gallardo?

When I saw this thread title, I wasn't sure if the OP meant him or the car...

As some have noted, I would imagine that it is a driving experience like none other and should be respected as such. Good luck with your search and be careful.

Omg......that is sooooo wrong.....How many TWIN TURBO VIPERS have you owned? I wish the real tuners would enlighten you but they must not want to waist their breath......There are a lot of TURBO VIPERS out there with 20,000---30,000 miles on them plus and still going strong and a long way from ready to break. You do not know what you are talkin about their friend....::usa:

I have been biting my Tongue about all these negative statements about TWIN TURBO VIPERS because the VIPER PATROL has warned me to keep my opinions to myself but there is no way a person is gonna pay $40,000 to $50,000 for a real professional Turbo tuner to build their Vipers so that they can go out and blow the motor up in 5,000 mi or so......that is insane..... I refuse to believe that anyone talking like these few on this forum about TWIN TURBO VIPERS have ever owned one......they are way wrong for talking like they are authorities on this subject to make themselves feel good. If they wanna talk the talk then they need to walk the walk......I wish other VIPER TWIN TURBO owners would speak up and not leave it to me to defend our Turbo Vipers......I hate for anyone that would be able to afford going to Turbo Vipers to be afraid to do so because of negative talk like this.....the same goes for owners of supercharged Vipers......we are all in the same boat here...... Supercharged Vipers and Turbo Vipers are the baddest of the bad and are a real thrill to own and drive.....don't let people that do not know what they are talking about scare you away from the pleasure of owing one......If the Viper Patrol kicks me off the Viper web site for defending our TWIN TURBO VIPERS and SUPERCHARGED VIPERS then so be it.....if you no longer hear from me on hear you will know that they did and my freedom of speech has been takin away.....HAPPY VIPERING TO ALL MY VIPER FRIENDS and sometimes enthusiast need to remain just that.....It is like Talkin like you are a Lawyer, when you are not....we all know what they call that type of Lawyer, don't we? :usa: :drive:

That was a joke, right?

Thanks friend......but by doing so the Viper Patrol may kick me off the web site......they have already warned me to keep my opinions to myself.......but I had to speak up on this subject.......I love TWIN TURBO and SUPERCHARGED VIPERS......:ban::oops::cop::outtahere:

a tuner will never state the life expectancy. he might tell you his opinion or what he has seen but it doesnt mean its gospel. there is a HUGE difference between a stock motor/900rwhp boosted car and a properly built engine/900rwhp boosted car. NIGHT and DAY difference between the power curve and longevity.

you can have a 1200rwhp built engine car, putt around town, go on long drives and get 100K miles. or you can have fun tearing it up and get 10K miles out of it.

the best built engine and system will last hours at most with a crappy tune. the tune is what you pay for mainly in a big build. the guy who built my car took a long time to street tune it in all kind of situations, rain, sun, humidity, traffic and then quick fine tuning on a dyno because i lived 1400 miles away from his shop and he didnt want me to have issues being that far away. youre obviously paying for parts and all but the best money you spend is on the tuning IMO

I can say that RSI Twin Turbo "Street" cars come with 2yr/24k mile warranties on engines that make 1000rwhp.

Roy, I built a cast piston TT RT/10 for a customer that was making 750-800 RWHP for 20,000+ miles.

IMO, there is nothing like a TT Viper!

Way to go Paolo........But I would be very afraid of cast pistons but hey it stayed together sounds like.......I put a 8-71 Weiand Blower on a Brand new 350 motor with cast pistons and the very first time I got on it , it came all to pieces, ha......when I put the next motor in it I went with ALL the forged stuff for a blower motor and NEVER had a drop of trouble after that......so I learned my lesson on that one, ha........but again, I say , you did good for that one to stay together......:headbang::omg::::)

That is why as a backup , you should Always use racing fuel at the track and you will be fine when you get into the boost....just like insurance, be on the safe side that way......

BTW, I understand the new owner of that car recently trapped 153 MPH @ the 1/4 with that car on about 14 PSI! After 20+K miles on the cast piston motor and turbo system!

The original owner went 100-150 MPH .5 seconds faster than a Veyron on ~10-11 PSI on 93 pump and water-****!
