Talk to Roe Racing. They have a cable (r232?) that connects to the VEC2. There are 2 very small wires that you plug in to the connectors on the VEC2. You then connect it to your laptop with a R232 cable. Very simple and well illustrated in Roe Racing's directions. They should have what you need.

Are you talking about hooking it up with the hood open, sittin in the garage....or are you talking about on the road?

My VEC2 came wired for the former.....I have since extended that serial cable into the passenger compartment and can log/tweak and play solitaire as I drive down the road. :)

If you don't have a DB9 cable port on your laptop, you'll need to get a USB to DB9 adapter. I have one from IOGear and it works well. I also have 2 6' DB9 cables that I connect together so that I can have the laptop in the passenger seat. I just run the cable across the back of the engine below the cowl and through the door.

1 - 6' cable will work just fine through the driver door, behind the top of the steering wheel and to the laptop. You can shut the door on the cable without breaking it. I've been doing it all summer and no problems. My wife sets the program for logging and pushes the button when I get a clear stretch of road. Safer that way as well.

For something not so unsightly you can run the cable under the cowl in some protective wire covering, then in (through a custom fitting) through the grommet on the passenger side....sealed and watertight of course. Grab a mount from www.rammount.com as seen below and you're all set!

You can also modify the rubber grommet on the driver's side door (open the door and look for the wiring harness that holds the speaker and door wiring). You can notch the grommet and fit a 9-pin serial post through there w/o issue.

Tony,

That looks great for a permanent mount. My cable is the car for 15 minutes at a crack and then out. Nobody has ever seen it but us. If I'm doing more than a couple of runs at different times, I'll coil it up and put it between the VEC2 and the cowl.....otherwise it's behind the seat in the pocket with my OBDII reader. 99% of the time, I got a passenger in the seat next to me, not a computer ;)

Steve,
I can fit a passenger in the seat EASILY if the tray is OUT, and relatively comfortably if the tray is IN....and SHE is SKINNY! :)

***Yes dear...if you read this...I'm talking about YOU!***

LOL!

You are right though in thinking that it is somewhat of a pain. I hardly ever have anyone in that seat, so it works well for me. Something about her wanting to share the last name but not the zip code! :)
