Vortex Cones? Worth the price?

Hey Guys,

I just installed my Cora Track 3.0 inch exhaust with Random Tech Metal Substrate Cats. And boy is my car LOUD. Before I blow a couple hundred dollars (I cant believe that they actually cost this much), on some Vortex Cones, I really want to know what the concensus is on whether or not they really lower the sound levels to justify their cost and installation, and what do they do regarding power loss/restriction.

I KNOW there are threads haphazardly discussing this, but I specificially want peoples input/feedback on just this option.. not exhaust systems.. not different cats, or different cat backs.. etc.. JUST the Vortext cones.

I had exactly the same set up, with exactly the same result. I tried the Vortex cones, and felt I lost power (flame suit on) with the drop in dbs. I then made the hole in the cones larger (cut the tip off to about the size of a quarter), and still wasn't happy with throttle response (mushy). ... After taking the Corsa Track pipes on and off more times than any stable person should admit, I gave up, sold the Corsa and purchased the 3" Mopar Race system, shortened the RT pipes by about 3.5", slipped the Mopar on (using the RT cat/elbows instead of the supplied Mopar open pipe), and whaala, pefection in sound and power.

I put these on my Gen1 because the exhast had some very bad drones at 1800 & 2500 RPM. There is some lower sound level, but the drones are significantly reduced. Installed them at the turn for the exhaust tip, so that I can easily remove them for taking my car out to the track. I consider them very worth while, as an easy way to reduce the noise for street but still have easy track prep with full power.

I put them in my car. They decreased noise significantly below 3000 rpm.

I did a before and after dyno. HP and torque were within 4 before and after (3 less hp, 4 more torque.)

My car has Corsa Track 3 inch, with RT cats. Without the cones, it was so loud I had a headache driving it after about 15 minutes.

My sound is loud, not really worried about drone. I want to tone it down, but not do it at the cost of power, and then putting heat back in it.

Maybe I just have to live with the loudness??

I returned my set to Summit Racing with no questions asked. So long as they are not in "used" condition they'll accept returns. I experimented with them when I was going through my mid-life exhaust install crisis. Took the car out for a test drive and the cones did take the edge off of the loudness level. Helped with drone too but I switched to a full Belanger exhaust and returned the cones. Now the exhaust can't be loud enough for me.

1Tony1 had posted up that the spirals worked very well for him in cutting down the sound and not robbing him of any power. Might be something to consider instead of the Vortex cones.

Most of the problem is probably the fault of your new mufflers.

Over 10yrs ago I removed the cats and added DynoMax mufflers with a case OD over 6 inches (6.75?) to my sidepipe Gen 1, and it was never LOUD. Even when I switched from 2.5 inch core mufflers to 3 inch core DynoMax mufflers.

The car actually sounded nice, with a deep and healthy tone. Still, side exhaust does have its' limitations.

The mufflers were about 30 inches long. Between the case OD and the length, there was plenty of muffler on each side to quiet things down. The big OD was kind of a tight fit under the sill.

I know now that had I not been so cautious about breaking an axle, and just raised my rpms at the line higher than 2500 and instead up to 3500-4500, I could have gone from a 12.12 best into the 11's with that G1 that just had simple mods. So the muffler length wasn't hurting horsepower.

I don't see why a G3 couldn't be muffled equally as well if there was room for both length and diameter.


Oops, I just noticed you wanted the subject to stay on the cones..well I'll leave the info for others who might be able to use it.

..You can just stuff something like those cones up in there I guess..

The cones will cut your noise a bit. On my car they kinda' took the edge off. I didn't loose noticable hp or tq after installing them.

Do put them behind the mufflers as they seem to work best there. I tried them behind the headers and they didn't work very well at that location (some power loss).

Cost should be about $70 each as Randy stated.

I would agree, when I lost power it was with the cones just behind the RT cats and ahead of the (Corsa) mufflers -- behind the mufflers may minimize the loss of power.

How do you get them behind the mufflers in the corsa system? The mufflers to the tip is all 1 piece. Anyone ??

PS. Dad has a theory on why its better to put them behind the mufflers (and it goes along with what everyone is saying):
"Just thinking that the insert might be more effective after the
mufflers. If the exhaust gases hit after the muffs the squeezed exhaust can
expand into the mufs whereas before the mufs the backpressure can only
use up the shorter path/volume in the downpipe to expand back."

Installed them on my 2001 GTS with Corsa.

Pushed the cones into the exhaust tips using a wooden dowel,
driiled holes through the bottom of the tailpipes just behind the tips and fastensed with SS screws and lock nuts.

The instructions say to weld but there have been no problems with the SS hardware.

The cones reduced the noise somewhat and eliminated the raspy exhaust note, typical with Corsa and HF Cats.
