I'd be interested to know if you discover whether Carfax did show this; however, as has been said in this and other threads, Carfax is only as good as the databases that it gets its info from. It certainly is no substitute for a detailed inspection.
This and another recent posting about a salvage vehicle bought by an unknowing buyer should serve as a wake-up call to many of us that we need to take the extra steps before the purchase.
I have relied on my own amateur car-guy skills to inspect a vehicle in the past, and I believe that I would catch many things; however, there's no substitute for a professional inspection IF it is done right.
