Hello everyone:

I was just wondering, does anyone know what those things do? They are the ones that are standing up usually on the side of the street. Usually they have the posted speed limit and then under that they have a section where it tells you how fast you were going when you are near it. Is there any "law" related thing to this? Do they mail you a ticket if you speed? I mean I really have been wondering about this for some time and can not come up with anything. One guy has on his avatar one that says it clocked a car at 167 MPH. Any help would be greatly appricated.

Thanks again

Have a good weekend

They just display your speed in an attempt to make you slow down.
;)
At least out here that's all they do, I've pegged a few at 100+MPH, and no love notes in the mail....

I'm pretty sure they are just to warn you to slow down. They have them here also setup sometimes. You won't get a ticket or anything, unless a cop is near by monitoring it etc.

I've gone through some and had them blink like crazy in Red :D , usually if your only going about 5 mph or slower over the mph it's set at it blinks yellow.

A couple of months ago, a couple of friends and I took out my 2000 Corvette. They were on the service road of the Interstate (late at night) with my camcorder.

I came down the highway, and the sign said "158".

It was great!

Yep I can confirm. We have some set near a bridge/construction site and I pass it several times per week.

I took the snake out about two weeks ago, just see how my fast ball was doing. It was only a two digit sign, so it read 00. I suppose the Viper was too much for it.

On a more serious note, they are independant systems that are not monitored. Just deterrants.

they are actually there to get an average speed that people drive thru this point. they are intended to keep you slowed down when you go thru this point. If people would travel at least 5 mph or more thru these points the speed limit would be raised.

You guys got it all wrong, here in Texas they put those out on the street so
you can do two things.

1) You can check your speedometer accuracy for people with non OEM tires and
wheels.

2) You can check to see how fast your car will go and you get to see it in big
bright letters.

At least thats what I use them for.

Tthey are used to determine what the speed on that road should be. In my opinion, they should be blank, because everone slows when they see them. I usually speed up, but my small attempt wont make a change.

I was just gonna say the same thing Dix - they're perfect for checking your speedo calibration at higher speeds.

55 and below it's a pretty close margin but it's nice of the local police to offer this service free of charge so we can make absolutely sure that an indicated 120 is in fact 120. :)

Even if they did clock you (which I haven't heard of . . . yet) it would only be a fine. A camera cannot assign points under current laws. To many the points are what's scary about getting ticketed...

I've heard from only one person (ignorant thinks-he-knows-it-all) that said they photograph your lic. plate and send you a ticket. I passed by one near my friends house that I picked up for school and passed by it going 55 (in a 35, clear roads), no notices.

They photo your plates and send a ticket in the mail in Germany. Haven't run into this in the USA.

Did anyone ever notice that the speed readout varies greatly for the first few seconds when it's clocking you? If it's not 100% accurate, then the guns cops use to give a ticket must do the same thing. They just take a high (bogus) reading while the thing is narrowing in to the real speed.

I just think they are fun:) I agree with Nexus...I wanted to make sure my speedo was accurate. However, I did learn that an indicated "170" is actually "167".

Now I know,

Some cities do "rent" photo-radar's, but they are easy to fight in court. They do take a picture of the plate, and some even take a shot of the driver.

Viper owners are in luck, It's the front plate that gets says cheese to the camera, and your probably going fast enough to blur the picture as it is. :p

Someone told me that the vision is narrowed by the speed.
Is this why I have not seen these???

My vision seems to pick up the chicks on the side of the road though??? Go figure....

I used to love launching my motorcycle from a stop and watch the display try to keep up as I approached it. See how easy it is to flash red.
