What ET and MPH did the SRT run in the drags?

Mike,

I saw a time posted of 12.1 at 119, it sounds like the track
conditions were less than ideal, but I would have liked to see
better times.

I'm anxiously waiting to see more posted as well

I have them on tape. One ran a 12.26 @ 120 and the other ran a 13.59 @ 112. Obviously, the slower one spun badly leaving the line and got a little "fishy" on the 1-2 shift.

My lowley Z06 runs 12.3,

It sounds like the lack of traction remains a problem for the
Viper. That's the problem with them now, add more power and the
same or less traction and the times get worse not better.

I am skepticle of the Run Flats as I have had bad experiences with Vettes and run flats. (Vett guys call them "Run Craps)
I know these are supposed to be better, but the initial times
don't indicate that they are?

If they don't break 120 in the 1/4 it is a sad, sad day for the Viper. Each GTS I have owned has done 118 no problem, and I would expect 50 hp, 100 lbs less weight, and better aero, to pull well into the 120s (like 122 at least).

You don't need a great launch to pull high trap speeds; I often run low 12s at 125 or more on low-profile street tires in my modded C4. Trap speed tells quite a tale on power.

Guys, don't fret just yet...

I heard the factory GTS ran 115 or 116mph... 120 is attainable in a stock GTS, but it's dayum hard to do!

I still say the SRT is 3-4mph on top of the GTS - and will hit 123-124mph in good hands.

Mike I just talked to Joe Houss. He said the SRT did a best of 12.0@120 and was between 12.0 and 12.2 from 119-120. It was driven by a factory rep. He also said that the same driver in a GTS was pulling 12.5-12.6 at 115-116. He said both cars were driven 'easy' and that the track could have been alot better.

One misperception is that the SRT/10 aerodynamics are better. They are better than an RT/10, but worse than a GTS.

Thanks for the info, folks,

Needless to say 12.0 at 120 is not what I hoped to hear, but I will concede that track conditions may have not been the best.

BTW, I did some physics at one point and concluded that the difference in drag coefficient between GTS and RT/10 won't affect ET in the 1/4 (at least not to the tenth's place). The effect was something like 0.02 sec. BFD.

Anyway, Mike may not be worried, but I am!

Hmmm....

I may have confused my facts somewhat on the drag coefficients.

RT/10, top down = .50
RT/10, Soft Top = .46
RT/10, Hard Top = .45
GTS = .35

Comp Coupe = .40
(This is what I was thinking the SRT/10 spec was)

SRT/10 = .30
(According to the rumor mill press, have not seen official published specs yet).

1 bad gts,

Since the laws of physics can't be changed, can you explain how a GenI RT/10 which is LIGHTER than the GTS and has "only" 50hp less is 1/2 second slower in the 1/4?

The SRT will run a low-11 second pass at 123-124mph with some good driving.

I hate when people jump all over the car without their facts straight. FACT is the same driver was running 12.5-12.6@115-116 in a GTS. So, same day, same track, same conditions, same driver, the SRT was .5 seconds and 4mph faster.

Oh Boy!!!! I think Mike IS worried. But for what it's worth I hope the new Viper does kick the old Vipers butt in the 1/4. Maybe the track just *****. I know the one I run on *****.

What track would that be Sean, have I heard of it??haha

Hope you making it out on Oct 26th I think it is, at Grand Bend, last chance for us to lay some good numbers down maybe for the year, let me know.....

and maybe we can lay some smack down to an SRT or 2 by then, seems the quantum leap in performance may not be there. hmmmmmmmm.........<stir ***>

have fun VOI gang, little rain can't dampen the fun of 1000's of Vipers, pun intended!

Just reacting the same as if you posted "yeah, went to the track but it sucked and I could only muster a 13.2@111 from my GTS" and then some Vette guy posts "see, I knew the Vipers weren't any faster then my Vette!"

Well, Well, more comments posted by those who were not there and do not know. PVO hosted a seminar on both the competition coupe and the SRT. And of course, most of us have driven it now. John Fernandez was in attendance and did respond to some of our more pointed questions. I took some voluminous notes and I intend to post them tommorow, but I gotta get some sleep, How about some teasers from John..."the car magazines are under an embargo to say NOTHING about their tests until next month, but how about this, 0-60 under 4.0, 7% improvement in drag, 1.15 continual lateral acceleration." Couple of other teasers, gearbox and rear based on GTSR... I expect the comments will start tommorow, when everyone who drove it gets back...Chris Marshall has already posted his thoughts...but those of us that drove it now recognize it may not be as outrageous looking as our Gen 2 cars, (I am keeping the GTS forever!) but stock to stock it is a much better performer.... Bad news...John said they would not start shipping until mid November. Only 60 cars have been built as of yesterday. The first 250 cars are going to be held until they are perfect! Oh, the 12.1 run was done by Herb Helbig in a car he drove direct to Bowling Green with his luggage still in the trunk. And as EVERYONE has posted the track was not ideal at all, this is an 11.0 sec. car! One more teaser per the PVO guys, rollbar package available after the first of the year, not done by DC but with their input. I'll post all my notes from the seminar tommorow. Don't worry Brunton, you're gonna love it! 1Bad you are right on with that prediction of mid 11.0. I'm telling you guys as strong as this car felt, I believe a Jaime Furman or a driver like Evan could get a very low 11.0, I don't think a 10.9 is out of the question. Wait till I post the torque numbers and rpm ranges John gave us..

Lee,

Thanks for the notes - I agree with you 100%! I am lucky in that I have an inside source at one of the rags that was at the Cali event participatig in the testing, so I already knew what "the numbers" were - so when I see people cringe when they read 12.0@120, I know they are being premature.

I believe Jason Heffner has already hit 11.5's in a pretty much stock GTS. GTS's max out at trap speeds of 120-121... never seen anything higher than 121 (and my best ever was 120.5). The new car I bet will trap 123 or so, and I bet some guys will be in the 124 range. 124 is a heck of a lot of MPH, and surely enough to run a very low 11... easily an 11.2 on a super sticky track. With drag radials, maybe 11.0. Maybe, MAYBE with ET streets this car could run in the 10's - I think it could happen with a sub-1.5 short time.

My car did 0-60 in 0.03 seconds. It finished off its extravagant peformance by pulling through the traps in the quarter in 1.4 seconds at 890mph. The crowd went deaf from the sonic boom at the 60' mark. Then I woke up

You SRT fanatics have sunken to a new low, now you are assuming a car that has run a best of 12.0 can run 11.0's or maybe high 10's?

Why cant you just wait and do real world testing and then make your posts. The additional 50hp will not make a viper 1 sec faster or even .5 sec faster, at best you can hope for .2-3tenths this is assuming that the car actually makes 50hp more at the wheels.

But as Dodge has shown us before a 50 hp claim is just that, gen 1's only pull 20hp or so less at the wheels than gen 2's so don't be too disappointed when the SRT only pulls 430-440rwhp.

Hey Russ, how are you doing? Have you dynoed your Viper stock? What did it put down? I remember a local GTS owner that did 44X RWHP with just the smooth tubes and K&N filter! The car went 11.80 @ 120.01 MPH, I was very impressed, this was a 1996 GTS back in 1997.

My guess was Herb would have easily run an 11.9 less the luggage.

The SRT-10 seminar suggested that the numbers the magazines should "easily attain" would be:

1/4 - 11.9 sec.
0-60 mph - 3.9 sec.
60-0 mph - 99 ft.

The brakes on this car are unreal, and I can attest to that based on my drive.......

I really don't see a reason for concern.A 12 flat with
bad track conditions! What you guy's have is a legitimate
11 second car-right off the showroom floor. With a good track
and some practice I am sure some of you will be getting into
the high 11's!
