When\'s it time for a new clutch????

I have 23,000 miles on my 00' RT, 2,000-3,000 of that is road course miles. The clutch seems fine but I don't wanna get bit if it "suddenly" goes bad. Any ideas on how much time I got left? Will a stock replacement be good enough for road racing or should I get something else?

Unfortunately, there is no easy way to examine a clutch disc for amount of wear.

Hey, SoCal, how ya doin'???

I'm actually taking the day off from work today! Unfortunately, I had to spend the morning reviving my battery which went dead....

For me, I found that it was time to replace the clutch after a hundred or so launches at the drag strip: winding up to 4000-4500 rpm and dumping the clutch with slicks. That will do it after a while. Cragin replaced my clutch with almost 18K mi on the car.

In your case, I can easily imagine it's time to replace it. Cragin says 20K mi is about what you should expect to get with "normal" driving (i.e., not you)!

If the Viper clutch is like any other....the way that i could always tell is by the position of the clutch pedal when the clutch starts to engage.

If it starts to engage at the very top, get ready for a replacement.

31,000 miles and no sign of replacement needed. I don't do a lot of drag strip, high rpm launches (just spins if you know what I mean) but I am definitely not easy on the car. However I have a tendency to engage the clutch fairly abruptly rather than slip it. Wears tires rather than clutches.

Concensus on here is about 17K to 30K+ miles depending on your driving style. You, sir, are definitely in the hard use range.

well if he drivers hard..socal Rebel( You go Boy!!) I wonder how mine is? i have 5000 miles on it already (2 months) and 3200 of it is road racing.

How do I check it to see how the wear is???

Mine suffered a catastrophic failure at about 16,000 miles. I don't drag it, but do drive the car fairly hard from time to time (although not usually rough on the clutch). Ironically, it died about 80 feet from my house (Richmond) after we came back from the VA/MD Viper Crab Feast on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

I saved the old clutch. It didn't show excessive wear, but part of the clutch mechanism just sheared.

When's time for a new clutch...hmm...as soon as you take delivery of that must have lightened flywheel!

(...and also find yourself buying the fancy carbon / kevlar clutch to go with it, although I've heard the stock clutch is very good!)
