what's the top speed you've hit on the streets ?

Re: what\'s the top speed you\'ve hit on the streets ? 188 MPH verified by radar on open highway in Nevada. It was accomplished legally during the 1998 Pony Express 100 and 1998 Elko Gamblers Run. In the straights, the speedo was pegged at 190 MPH and would not go higher. The radar was...

Help! Oil Drops Under New 2002 Viper with 200 miles on it

Based on the location (inside the rear wheel) and the color (yellow/amber), my guess is that your brake line is leaking. That could be brake fluid on your floor. Jack up your car, remove the rear wheel, check where the brake line comes into the brake caliper. It should be bone dry.

Changing Brake Fluid - Process questions

Craig, I have been using the pressure bleeding system you are talking about for the last 4 years. It's very reliable and saves major time once you get the routine down. At track events it is a real time saver, especially if you like to bleed your system often. I usually bleed at the end of...

How to get downforce on 2001 GTS?

Take a close look at all 4 sides of one of the Oreca GTS-R Vipers. This is the state of the art in Viper aerodynamics. Effective aero parts don't make any sense on a street car unless you are doing it for looks only. They will slow your car down everywhere except high speed turns and, even...

Whay are there no Vipers in the Speed World Challenge

Because the Viper was so dominating in prior years that the sanctioning body has "dumbed" it down enough with restrictions to make it non-competitive. Ask Bobby Archer, previously the World Challenge Series champion in his Viper. This is why the Viper Racing League has become so popular with...

    Heat cycling Hoosiers??? Opinions!!!

Deano, not everyone is as fast nor do they burn them up as quickly as you do. I've found that heat cycling will definitely extend the tire's "competitive" life. After 5 or 6 heat cycles, my tires are definitely not competitive with a brand new set, but there is plenty of rubber left up to...

    Hoosier Tires....help?

It only takes about 10 minutes to heat cycle the tires yourself. Run 4 or 5 laps while progressively increasing your speeds each lap. Once they are up to optimal operating temps, say 180 degrees minimum, take them off your car and let them cool down to ambient temperature for at least 24 hours...

    Hoosier Tires....help?

The A-compound is a soft rubber compound designed for autocross use. The R-compound is harder and designed for road racing on road course circuits. The A-compound is pretty useless for road racing unless you are in very cold weather. They will wear very quickly. It is illegal in the Viper...

Gingerman Raceway: 72 Vipers, one Prevost, and a lounge Chair

Seth, thanks for your summary of this event. Also, congratulations on your outstanding performance throughout the weekend. VRL drivers have steadily improved their driving and racing abilities. The competition is immense. I used to expect a podium finish, now a top 10 finish is a challenge...

    Road course tire pressure ??

A tire is designed to produce maximum cornering traction within a range of tire slip angles. The slip angle is the angle between the direction the wheel is pointed and the direction the wheel is actaully traveling. It is easy to think of it in terms of sidewall deflection in a turn. If you...

02 ACR -v- 911 GT2 SPANKED in Sports Car International

Tom, Here's my understanding of how all this works. Lifting a tire off the ground is not the fast way around the track. Wherever on the track this happens, you are losing time. The teams you are seeing do this have either not figured this out, or they have decided that the compromise in...

02 ACR -v- 911 GT2 SPANKED in Sports Car International

Tom, I believe that an ultra stiff rebound setting on the shock will do exactly what you said you don't want. It will lift the inside tire in a turn. It would be interesting to have a thread on shock absorbers and how they work.

02 ACR -v- 911 GT2 SPANKED in Sports Car International

Most of the Viper Racing League cars were consistently under 2 minute lap times at Thunderhill during the March Viper Days event, some were 5-6 seconds per lap faster. These cars have stock motors with headers, stock drivelines, upgraded brakes, and aero. They are built for far less than the...

    Witnessed Comp Coupe Testing Session

Thanks for the report Rick. I predict times for the VRL front runners will be in in the high 25's / low 26's in two weeks. Since we have to run on DOT Hoosier tires, this is a huge restriction. I suspect a new Goodyear slick would produce lower times by 1.5-2.0 seconds at Gingerman. If I'm...

"My guess is that the 2003 SRT-10 will need to have it's own class next year."

Re: \"My guess is that the 2003 SRT-10 will need to have it\'s own class next year.\" I can tell you that certain PVO representatives have stated that a stock SRT-10 will slaughter a stock GTS in terms of road course lap times. I understand that the difference will be as big or bigger than the...

ORECA doing Great, Le Mans 2002

The practice times posted on the Le Mans site look quite fast. Anything under 4 minutes in the GTS class is very competitive. The Vipers are flying. It's impressive that they are ahead of both the Vettes and the Saleens at this stage. Their actual race times will be much slower and the...

What are the biggest factors on the race course--survey, racers please rank.

(1)Driver-this is worth more than all the rest of the items combined-you can improve lap times 20 seconds or more within one weekend (2)Tires-new Goodyear slicks are worth as much as 2-3 seconds over a new Hoosier..the Hoosier is worth 2-3 seconds over a Pilot (3)Power to weight ratio - weight...

Setting toe, question on tie rod

You are correct. For what it's worth, I've found that one complete 360 degree rotation on the tie rod will change your toe setting about 1/4". For Gingerman, above average amounts of toe out will help your corner entry significantly. I've run as much as 1/8" toe out on each front wheel at...

Where can I get a brake bleeder hose???

The plastic hose has a 1/4" I.D. and a 3/8" O.D. It can be purchased at your local Ace Hardware or Home Depot. You can purchase it by the linear foot. As I recall, it's about 25 cents per foot. I usually get 10 or 20 feet at a time and cut into pieces about 2 feet long. It's so cheap...

2003 Viper Vs. 2003 GT40. If price and power were the same, Which would you choose?

Want another opinion? Don't flinch. It's just my opinion. Dudes, sorry to burst your bubble but, the GT-40 looks like kit-car crap to me. It reminds me of those cheap exotic car bodies that you see attached to a VW chassis. Just my opinion, but I think it looks like dog meat. I've been up...

    Plugs and Plug Wires

We noticed no discernible difference in performance between stock plugs and wires versus stock plugs and hi-performance wires. We also noticed a performance loss going to different plugs from stock.

    How to disassemble rear calipers?

I have 4 used stock rear calipers...one set with less than 1000 miles, the other set with 5,000 miles. Both were used on the track before I upgraded my brake system. You can have all 4 of them for $400. E-mail me if interested.

    Alignment Specs for Eibachs?

Russ, the brand of spring you use has no bearing on what ride height or alignment specs to use. The stock ride height as measured from the bottom of the frame to the ground is 5" at the front axle centerline and 5-1/2" at the rear axle centerline. If you lower your car by more than an inch in...
