the fastest mustang in the 70's is a 1971 429 c.i. @ 375 h.p. w/11.5:1 compression with four barrel carburator and the viper would smoke that in the 1/4 mile.

He's pulling your chain! Mustang II's never saw a 460 - not from the factory... In fact, darned few Mustang II's even had 5.0L (302CID) V8's. Most were pretty pukey 4's or 6's.

To tell the truth, I'd be afraid to ride in - let alone drive hard - a $6000 Mustang II with a 460. Talk about looooowwwww budget...

Be more specific here. What car purchased new from the factory, or what car can be "built" for under 100k? Does it need to be street legal, and I use the term street legal loosely. If option B is the case, it would be hard to beat say a recently purcahsed GTS for 50k with a fully built motor and a monster twin turbo kit (roughly 50k).

I don't believe there is a NEW car under 100k out there that can beat the SRT in the quarter.

I can take a 1500 dollar civic, put 10000 in to it and hand an SRT its ass at the track on slicks or from a 3rd gear roll on the highway. You can make anything fast, but you can't make just any car look like a Viper. A ferarri, Merc AMG, or a Ford GT would not be an economical way of trying to beat a viper. Take a 2003 Cobra, upgrade the exhaust, pulley, and put a nitrous kit on it and you're talking bus lengths on a viper in a race.

Try not to flip, but I thought I might throw in the Lotus Elise. 13.6 1/4 mile and a 0-60 in 4.7 sec.... all this from a 190 HP 1500 lb little bomb that cost about 1/3 the cost of a Viper new! What, not fast enough? Try chasing one on a twisty road. (JD)

Jim's right about the Elise and don't forget the Noble. You can get a Noble for under $100,000 that would give a Viper a handful, both on a dragstrip and a road course. It's still not a Viper though!

Actually the fastest 1/4 mile American car is the Viper. I have no clue what the GT 40 will be doing but all say it will be quicker

Stock, production (sold by an OEM in the USA), same driver skill, 1/4 mile only, etc.

Depending on which test I have read, the Viper (Gen II and SRT) are basically dead even with a Ford GT

The only things that I have seen that will beat a Viper in the 1/4 are much more than $100K.

Non-OEM cars that can be bought new, there are probably too many to list, Noble M12, Ultima GTR, some Cobra kits, etc. Many many modified cars would beat it for much much less money. Also, many motorcycles would beat it in the 1/4 for a lot less.

An Elise would not come close to a Viper in the 1/4 but should be close on a tight road course. The June 2004 issue of Automobile Magazine actually tests the SRT-10, Noble M12, Lotus Elise (US spec) and several other great cars on a track together. The Viper beat the Elise around Barber Mostorsports Park.

I use to be a vette fanatic and always heard about the 67-69 L88's that were so powerful with HP's that were advertised as being 100-150 HP less than actual HP. Many stories floating around how many of these L88's were driven off the lot and immediately wrecked due to the awesome power. BUT, as Ron so eloquently pointed out about and I've read it before, the Viper smokes the L88! Just shows how awesome these cars really are.

Gerald, keep in mind though that all the times in that list are stock cars from their time periods which means that basically all of the musclecars were tested on POLYGLASS tires. There is no way that you could hook up all that hp without radials. slap some new age rubber on those cars and it would be CLOSE.

Oh yeah....

The Federalized (US) Lotus Elise weighs about 2,000 pounds, not 1,500. And the only way this car is pulling a 13.6 1/4 or 4.7 to 60 is with a 87 pound driver and no passenger (I DON'T CARE WHAT THE MAGS SAY). How do I know? I drove one... They are not fast, but do handle great. The feedback the cars gives through the wheel and seat is unreal (Like a freak'in go cart). They are soooooo small though, you feel really uneasy rolling past a Suburban or 18 wheeler. And they are EXTREMELY uncomfortable to enter/exit. Basically a fun little track car that makes a poor street car, IMO.

Even updated with modern rubber, many of the classic musclecars are still not as quick (without major mods) as the Viper. There are of course rumors about the ZL-1 Corvettes, which were supposed to run mid 11s, but there were only 2 cars built, and the faster runs were done with full drag slicks and an open exhaust.
Plus I'd never really consider any car with under 250 built a "production" car. :rolleyes:

Both the $300K Lambo Murcielago and $150K Ford GT are very close to the performance of the SRT-10 Viper.
The Ford GT may get extra power tweaking to make the production models quicker than the early test cars. :cool:

That SL600 was an odd test because 3 other magazine tests put the SL600 around 12.4@117MPH (still impressive), except for that one test which might have used drag radials or had special track prep. Still The $150K++ SL65 might be quicker than the Viper when it comes out with a much more powerful tweaked version of the SL600's engine, meatier rubber, and more aggressive tuning. :D

The C6 Z06 Corvette should be out in about a year or so, and it promises to be quicker than the current SRT-10 Viper, and for less money.
But unless DC is asleep at the wheel, they will build an even more powerful Viper to compete against the best that the world has to offer. :2tu:

I am not dreaming. Take an L88 in stock form today and put modern tires on it and it will beat a Viper. And comapred to it's peers of it's age, the L88 is much more car. I would think that an tri power 427, a 426 HEMI Cuda, and an LS6 with similar upgrades would beat a stock Viper in a straight line. Also, givien tha fact they cost about $4,000 new makes them truely incredible machines. I agree that nothing made today can beat the Viper for twice the price.

One more that I forgot .... Motion Performance Camaro was sold through Chevy dealers with a nirmal warranty. The later ones from 69 were only COPO Camaros. They were gurateed to run mid 11s.

The superfast L-88 raises its head again.
Problem is, all the tests from the period show the car to be slow compared to a modern Vette.

The tires of the day might be a reason for the magazine article test times to be so poor.

The other reason might simply be that the cars were very much myth and little reality.

How many L-88 Vettes were ever made? Not many.

The L-88 was a high compression carburated 427. It probably had 500 hp or so. It didn't have anything going for it that would make it a bunch more power than the SRT-10.
L-88 powerful, yes. Superpower, no.

Before we hear the story about how fast your uncle's friend's L-88 was, or the story about GM not wanting to sell any L-88s cuz they had so much power,
remember this.
Every time we have this conversation, people chime in with all kinds of crud that can't be supported by any of the contemporary data.

Sure, the 60s car would be faster with y2k tires. Well, the modern car would be faster with 12:1 compression too.

The old street monsters were fastest in our memory of them.
