How Can I Protect Fender Paint from Stone Chips

I was horrified to see what a month of driving has done to my inside fenders on front and rear.

I havent driven through any areas with stones intentionally but there are a ton of chips.

You would think Dodge would have made that area more protected as you dont want that after the first drive in a brand new car.

Any idea how to protect it from here on out?

Thanks!

I assume you are talking about the rocker panels (side sills), but basically you can buy stylized mud flaps from some of the vendors, or choose to clear bra that area. The clear bra will get torn up as well over time, but it definitely does it's job.

That was a very entertaining read. Where can I buy the clear bra stuff? Is it custom cut already or can someone do it for me?

Are there any other areas you would do?

Thanks!

At a minimum, you would want to do the full rocker panel (up to the body line below the SRT-10), the lower half of the rear bumper cover, and the full front bumper and first 18" of the hood and front fender.

If you buy a high-end product, the clear bra is basically invisible. If you really want it invisible and aren't budget limited, then you would do the entire hood and entire front fenders. Today with high end cars that actually get driven (Ferrari, Porsche, etc), it is very common for them to have almost the whole car clear-bra'd for protection.

As far as doing it yourself, if you are patient and good at DIY projects then it's possible for you to do simple areas such as the rocker panels to protect against the sandblasting, but do not attempt to do the front bumper yourself. The material is very expensive and if you don't know what you are doing it will turn out horrible.

If you want to get more familiar with the material and process, check out this link. I have done a lot of research into this subject and this is one of, if not the best, product on the market. If you go to their support section, you can view the "how-to" guide to get a basic understanding of the process. It's essentially like applying a giant cell phone screen protector.

ZZ where do people go to have this stuff installed? There is a Ferrari dealership closeby. Maybe I should go there or to a Lexus dealership who is qualified but will not charge a fortune. Im sure they all have people who do this. I will have to request this exact material to be used then. Is it really that much better than the others? Thanks again

I cut templates in card and made some subtle flaps out of 4mm neoprene rubber, brilliant, work a treat, punche holes where the original
screws go, on the backs i have gone higher up the arch

Yes, this totally *****. It's worse with stickier tires too. I've had my side sills repainted twice so far.

I have wanted to have clear bra installed on my 09 vert since I bought it last year. I will need to have the rocker panels repainted first, though.
How much did it cost you for the repaint, Allan?

There are some higher end dealerships which do offer this service. Other than dealerships, tint installation/specialty shops do the installs. If you google search it I am sure you can come up with a few places. The quality of the installations all comes down to experience, so make sure you check the reputation of the shop before having it done.

As far as brand of film, some places may give you the option of different brands they can source, but I know there are shops exclusively use one brand. Some of the more popular brands are 3M, Avery Nano Shield, Ventureshield Ultra, and Xpel Ultimate. The differences are in the ease of installation, whether they yellow over time (especially for you since you have a white car), how much orange peel is in the film, and how well they prevent rock chips.

If you do some googling you can find endless forum discussions on this topic.

You can make your templates easily, hold some card to the inside of the arch and run a pencil down to get the shape

If you want to wait a couple of months, you can get a full set of CF guards from me since I decided to build my own fiberglass stuff. For all practical purposes, they are brand new since I put them on the car but never drove with them on the car (yet).

Around a grand for the pair, plus the emblems from VPA. The color makes a difference in the cost, as well as who you know to do it. Venom Red is a more expensive color to mix than the non-metallic colors, but I have a brother in-law that owns a body shop.
